Providence Post Game Thread

Haven’t seen this mentioned much but there has been a lot of anxiety about FTs dooming us in closer games

15-18 (83%) last night
The "free throws are gonna kill us" guys are always ready for their close-up. They were poised to strike in '23 and '24 with their relentless regular season bleating. They had their "I told you so's" all cued up but had to suffer alone when UConn won. But as you recognize, they're back. You know who had top FT shooting teams? Dom Perno.

We were down 13 with eight and half left. Then lockdown D. I love Solo, but his defense was horrible tonight. Kudos to Dan for having the ‘nads to bench him.

This is what Silas is capable of doing. 15 assists from him. Amazing. School record 18 THREES!

We were down 11 with under 3 left!

Some crazy stats from a great comeback win.
Silas with 23 points, 15 assists and only 1 turnover. Mullins with 6 threes and 24 points including 8 points in OT. Our bench got outscored 41-3 and we still won. That has to be some kind of record.

Ohhh someone else stole this! 😂

I modified that generic "Dawg in him" picture/meme a couple years back. I realize I need to update it as it had puppy Jonathan XV. He's now a grown boy. But here's my original:

A bunch of new players just getting used to each other. Surprised we didn’t see more Vaacks. And never want to see Powell again. He never shot that well in warmups.
I’m sorry but I just have to respond to this as I keep seeing it on here. Powell has been hurt and missed most of the BE season so far. He has not played well or a lot since returning. Last year he was the best player in the 2nd half of the year at Georgia Tech playing in the ACC. He averaged over 12 points a game for the year and made 53 3 pointers at a 36% clip.

He’s not some goof that just got inserted and got lucky like the way it’s being portrayed on here. He’s a good player.

Has he ever tied a tie before? Maybe that was some nouveau cool “in” knot I’m unaware of, but it looked ridiculous
I asked the same question in the chat because I served time in Catholic school and it looked like someone gave his tie a good yank before he went on the air. But apparently it was a Trinity Knot which I hadn’t ever heard of before although I’m not really hip to tie tying game.

Great. Should we go to the Friars board and correct all their questionable takes on our team next?

What do you think Providence will do at the end of the season? This current team has a ton of talent and the guys you really want coming back have plenty of eligibility. Have you heard anything about if they will fire English or keep him and run it back with the studs, Derkack, and guys you will go after in the portal? Kim English is a hell of a recruiter but he's yet to show in game coaching chops.

During Dan's post game media access. And he was careful in his response to a reporter's question about the T- Because of BE oversight of his comments in press conferences(Val)- Said that he was having a discussion with one of the refs as they were headed to the tunnel. A ref he said he generally has excellent communication with- and a second ref joined the conversation after they were having a back and forth- And he was the guy to assess the T.

Wasn't there-Don't know what was said-Saw the replay of the interaction- From my perspective and IMO- he was working his way to the locker room-Took advantage of proximity to the refs as they were exiting to voice his concern about the lack of balance in fouls being called. I do not think he was trying to get a T. And you are correct- It appeared that the second half whistle was more fairly balanced.

Not sure he would want to risk adding to the deficit starting the second half with 2 FTs and possession- by getting a T- But it worked out ok. I'll take the W

I was there. The conversation that led to the T did not seem particularly intense. Hurley yelled to get the attention of one of the officials, but there was nothing in the interaction that I thought was inappropriate.

You heard everything Hurley said?

I was pretty impressed with this PC team. If they could roll back Mela, Vaaks, Oswin & Jones (all underclassmen), that is a really good nucleus. Go find a good PG and you have easily a top 25 team. Key will be retention.

I don’t think I’ve seen anybody mention this yet, but I think Tarris was definitely out of bounds when he grabbed that. His right foot was out …

That’s crazy! I remember in real time thinking even Tarris looked perplexed to be holding the ball all of a sudden with no whistle and just like, “better pass and keep it moving!”

I’ll take that as a trade for the no whistle early in the game when Silas got body checked into another dimension by their center.

TBH. Based on the replay shown on TV. Was surprised that a T was called at all. Looked like Dan Hurley was just having a back and forth conversation that looked composed. Your comments suggest the same.

That's not what I said.

It wasn't even clear at the time that a T was called. I heard a whistle but honestly thought it was either inadvertent or something else was going on that I didn't notice.

Right. No ranting, nothing demonstrative. Just a conversation. Could Hurley have calmly called him a +#@ing #$*&# ( %^&%? I suppose so . . .

the fast plays for open 3 they ran later in the game were really effective. could incorporate that into the gameplan to switch up the pace.

It's a high-level group offensively, but they can't guard anyone.

That's why I asked. Need to know what was said.

If he didn't flunk off as a freshman, he'd would have been starting by season's end.
I didn't recall that we was not a starter. That's even more amazing. He had 16 assists off the bench? I recall he had some academic issues, stole some laptops, etc. I feel like he left before we found out how good he could have been. Then again, he did not work out with the Nets who drafted him. I guess he was a defensive liability, but boy could he dish dimes.

The problem is they clearly have top 25 talent this season and they're still 8-7.
Best players are very young. Catch 22 here is that if English is booted, they all portal. Maybe they can treat it like football and bring in a new defensive coordinator?

Karaban's 3 at the 1 minute mark was immense.

Sellers just hit a 3 for PC to go up by 5 with a minute left. Karaban comes right down and hits a 3.

One could argue that was the biggest shot of the night.

Absolutely. I remember thinking when he let it fly that it was a required make for us to still have chance.

My guess is they'll keep him because Jamier Jones, Vaaks, Oswin, Mela (plus Jaylen Harrell, Aiden Derkack) are so young and they don't want to lose them. English simply has to get a lot better as a coach though.

Sounds right. If you're going to move off English with that roster, you have to make sure whoever that next guy is is truly a one step back, 2 steps foward guy.
