Providence Post Game Thread

The two Providence freshman are impressive. Both are so good. The guards are quick and can hit open threes. They do play too fast and make bad decisions but that’s on the coach. They have a center who is top 10 in block shots in the country.

If they had a better coach they wouldn’t have 7 losses.

.-.
It’s your internet because mine never lagged.
I was listening on the UConn Radio broadcast and they lost signal for a bit because internet went down at the stadium. They actually switched over to the women's game for a few seconds. But by the time I got home and started watching Peacock delayed, there were no issues on Peacock for me.

Wow, already 12 pages in this thread. I just got back from the AMP. I was seated first row above the tunnel behind PC's bench where the PC players entered and left. I don't know if you could see it on TV, but the PC players were visibly a combination of tired, dejected, and stunned after the final buzzer at regulation and they realized it was going to OT.

Whew what a game. The PC fans were dejected after that one and the Husky fans were leading the chants in the concourse after the game.
It goes back to the whole UConn vs Michigan, great taste/less filling debates on here. It doesn't matter how great your team is, there are going to be road games where things don't go as planned and the great team is not going to win in pristine fashion and beat the Vegas line. That is what this was for UConn. Find a way to grit out a win and get the hell out the AMP go back to home sweet home in Storrs and Gampel for the next game.

BTW, the loud fan that yelled "miss" that caused Sellers to miss the first FT in the 2nd half after Hurley got a technical- that was me 🙂

I think he deserves his own thread after that performance because we haven't seen many like it in our history.

He's not our most talented player but I think he's our best player because he does it on both ends. He's incredible on defense and one of the best guard defenders I can remember coming through here as long as he's not fouling.
Did you remember Ricky Moore's D?

Recorded the game so I cud enjoy it uninterrupted. Just finished watching. What a game. Demary Mullins Reed balled out in that order. One of most satisfying big east wins I can remember in a while. We never win these types of games- 4 guys had 20 plus points. Not even including ball. Hurley stayed with the hot rotation with ball on bench and it worked. Crazy
Alex was pretty awesome as well. It seemed like all his baskets were clutch ones when we really needed a lift.

Temendous heart coming back after being down double digits to a team that was shooting unconcious.
Danny's technical had an effect on the refs. We were getting all the calls for the first few minutes of the second half.
Tarris went from struggling in the first half to an absolute beast in the second. Feed the bear!
Alex showed why he's the captain. A true captain.
Mullins - WOW. How lucky we were to get this kid? Money.
Silas was the stabilizer all game despite getting clobbered by Erhummwuse (no call of course). Rock rock solid - so happy to have him

I have to add this part, hats off to the Friars. They played extremely hard and shot the lights out for most of the game.

In the end, the more talented team with the better coach won.
Oh yes, Providence, as I said before this game, that team has some dudes. They just need to gel better on defense and be more cohesive on both ends of the floor. The first thing English has to do is make sure the players don't mentally go into the tank and lose at Xavier. Lose to UConn once this week, don't lose to them twice this week by going into Xavier sluggish and downtrodden. They won't have the AMP to charge them up with jolts of energy like they did tonight. I got back from the AMP. Believe me those PC players really fed off the energy of the AMP crowd.

OK. Finally finished reading all the posts. I am so jacked up right now. Can't go to sleep.

First hats off to PC. They played as well as anyone we faced this year, at least until their center went out with 4 fouls. I thought Jones injury would hurt them but Mela came in and played awesome. They have some real offensive studs that can make shots. There is no way they are 8-6 if they play like that every night. But as I predicted, they would play their best against us. Everyone in the BE will, so we just have to be ready for it. Wouldn't it be great if we slug our way through a supposed down BE conference taking everyone's best shot, and get to the Tournament and find it is easier? That's exactly what happened in both championship seasons.

Made the drive to Providence. The Friar fans thought they had it in the bag and were ready to storm. Enduring the first 37 minutes was almost worth getting to see Silas and Braylon crush their dreams

Were any Friars court-side near the end of regulation? I envision 100 kids ready to storm the court and then turning around with their heads down to get back to their seats.

I can't believe I couldn't watch this ... but I was TRYING to work while following the gamecast on ESPN... getting more frustrated by the minute, then suddenly it's 6, 4, 2 point game, and then I see "end of 2nd half" I'm like whaaaaaa

I can't wait to watch some highlights. Seems like Silas was our best player for most of the game and Braylon obviously hit some big shots too.

But...giving up close to 90 in regulation to PC? The defense couldn't have been good.

They had multiple guys off the bench who don’t really shoot/make threes (per Donny and Fanta) draining bonkers threes. Providence definitely harnessed all of the hammered rowdy Rhode Island energy in the AMP tonight.

Hah, didn't mean to hit send. I've got more:

As everyone is saying Silas was amazing. 15 assists and 1 TO. Oh and the game winner. Bang!
Alex was Mr. Clutch in regulation. Every time we needed a lift, the Captain delivered.
Reed was a no show in the first half and dominated the second with their big in foul trouble (though Reed battled foul trouble too)
Mullins was pretty good (a few bad TO's) in regulation and then came OT and he exploded!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was awesome to behold.
Ball wasn't as bad as some are saying, but I see why Hurley benched him (but hats off to him for making what seems to be the right call)
Stewart had only 3 points but boy was that 3 big. And the assist to Reed down low. Great role player.
Reibe had is moments, some key rebounds with Reed in foul trouble. What a luxury to have him as a backup center!
Ross barely played but he will get more opportunities as he heals.
Smith does not look like he is having fun out there. Thankfully we only needed 4 minutes from him. I hope he gets his head straight because we will probably need him at some point.

All in all, a great win. Best game I have seen in a long time. Let's go UConn!

I know Stewart won't get the acclaim as he only had 3 points but he was huge on big hustle plays and playing great D. He allowed us to play without Ball. What a game by him and Demary, Mullins. Dawgs. Demary coming out party for sure. He is just solid and he needs to take control of the game. He is the only player who can really find his own offense right now. Mullins will eventually.

So glad to see JStew props because he was a soldier for us out there tonight. Reminded me of AJJ on those hustle plays that you just have to see to know they happened. Also clearly such a valuable passer for us, especially getting it to Tarris for some easy ones.

Providence shot 50% from the floor and 58% from 3 with 14 makes. They out rebounded us.

Sure you can our defense was not great in the first half, but Providence played an incredible game.

There are maybe only 2-3 teams in the country that are winning that game tonight.
I counted only one, UConn. 😁

Curious to hear comments on Ross after the game. I’m assuming minutes restriction? With our struggles on D, felt like he would have gotten more run if available, especially against Jones.

I hadn’t seen the BY in the hours leading up to the game so I assumed he was out because of how much we could’ve used him in the first half. Then suddenly I noticed he was on the floor, I blinked and he was off again. So I can only assume he was restricted and then the flow of the game kept him almost completely benched within that context.

I agree with this. Ball has played well many times this year and been the best UConn player several times. He was just lost in the second half of this one, and it was a smart decision by Hurley to go to Stewart tonight. Different players will have bad games on different nights. It doesn’t mean they are bad players. Ball is a critical part of this team.

I didn't think we played mediocre. PC was just on fire. They have some shot makers who made shots. Did you see that Mela around the world reverse layup? Insane! They were playing out of their minds!
I agree PC was playing out of their minds, but UConn didn’t defend drives well today, had a slot of sloppy turnovers, bench was nonexistent other than Stewart, PC drives led to a fair amount of
wide open 3s by PC, Reed really struggled in the first half, they got out rebounded.

It was a heroic finish and I commend their heart for never giving up, and playing well under pressure at the end. That said they never should have been down that much to PC even with PC playing their best game.

He had too. Ball plays no D. Stewart was great on D and we had other scorers. We didn't need Ball this game to score.

The best lineup for the occasion ended the game, which is self-evident in the result, but I just gotta defend Solo because was a big part of our life support in the first half. And he actually started the game hot on defense too.

Really loved watching him defend, especially last 10+ot!

Walking off the court at end of first half he was chirping at the ref on the way to the tunnel. Have never seen a T called like that before but refs are gonna bust Danny's onions whenever they get the chance. Foul shots to start the second half/possession.
Really was starting to feel as though that was going to cost them the game
