Providence Post Game Thread

Powell had some nice shots. That 3 pointer in OT while falling away was clutch but was quickly answered by UConn.

Powell looks like a retro Toby Kimball.

Well at least our offense rating will go up on K

The true MVP was me...realized during the 2nd half the game was on peacock so I turned it on when we cut it to ~5 then w just over 3min to go they went up 11 and I decided I was bad luck so I turned it off and went back to following the game cast. Cue the comeback
I get why you feel that way. However, I switched shirts twice with no success. Then, out of desperation, I went shirtless for the last 5 minutes of regulation, and that's when we got our mojo back. So respectfully, I am the true MVP here.

During Dan's post game media access. And he was careful in his response to a reporter's question about the T- Because of BE oversight of his comments in press conferences(Val)- Said that he was having a discussion with one of the refs as they were headed to the tunnel. A ref he said he generally has excellent communication with- and a second ref joined the conversation after they were having a back and forth- And he was the guy to assess the T.

Wasn't there-Don't know what was said-Saw the replay of the interaction- From my perspective and IMO- he was working his way to the locker room-Took advantage of proximity to the refs as they were exiting to voice his concern about the lack of balance in fouls being called. I do not think he was trying to get a T. And you are correct- It appeared that the second half whistle was more fairly balanced.

Not sure he would want to risk adding to the deficit starting the second half with 2 FTs and possession- by getting a T- But it worked out ok. I'll take the W
Who was slated to get possession to start the 2nd half pre-T?

I was thinking the same thing. But the defense will take a hit.

Offense up to 19 from 23. Defense down to 5 from 3. Now 8 overall. How did Duke pass us? They blow.

and that illustrates how crap those stats really are. Anybody who watched that game who is not impressed with UConn is blind or biased. Providence had guys who are terrible shooters taking and making contested 3's. That white kid had a move that would have made MJ jealous. In short, our second half D was outstanding, I dont care what the kenpom folks say.

1) I will never understand how any of you like Fanta. He's awful. Pair him with Donny, and I don't think you can have a more painful listen.

2) We had no business winning that game. We were lifeless in the first half with Tarris being absolutely horrible. Once desperation set in, we made play-after-play. So this was an enormous win for a variety of reasons. I'm shocked we came back, tbh.

3) It's insane that PC has 7 losses. As Hurley said, they have at least three or four guys who should be on NBA rosters. They are an extremely difficult cover. I think we are a very good defensive team. I don't think we have great individual defenders, save Silas sans fouls or Ross/Stew on certain days. The PC offense got pretty much whatever they wanted the entire game, including a wide-open look at the end of regulation.

4) For as much as we complain about officiating, they absolutely missed Tarris on the endline. If they call that, we may lose that game. I think that's the second game-changing miss call that we've gotten this year by my count. I can't remember the first, but there was definitely one. Maybe BYU?

5) The evolution of Stew into an uber intangible/glue guy is great to see. His statline was remarkably ordinary, but it was absolutely indispensable to this win. He's never going to be an alpha guy like many here thought. But his defense, passing, connectiveness, etc. is absolutely needed.

6) There's no team I want to beat more than PC. At the same time, I really like their collection of talent. English coached an excellent game until crunchtime when things got chaotic, and they just made crucial mistakes to let us come back. The clock management, timeout usage, shot selection... All of it was a disaster. It actually makes me have empathy for PC as that is a really, really talented roster, and unless something drastically changes, it is going to go to waste.

7) To whomever I argued with re: Braylon's shot selection, that is why he has a green light any time he has space. He is beyond explosive, and he just demoralizes a team. The PC board was basically saying any time he shoots, you just hope he misses. There aren't many guys that you say that about.

8) Silas has bounced back, huh? That was as dominant a floor game for a UConn PG in a long, long time. Newton had some big scoring nights for sure. But I don't remember him having games when he was hitting clutch shot after shot, playing smothering D, AND absolutely controlling the offense with his passing.

9) We were outscored 40-3 off the bench. That's crazy. This was the first game where it looked like the game was a little too fast for Reibe.

10) We still haven't seen our team put it all together just yet. And that's a good thing. This was a really important win for us to get better.

Continuing to play full speed and jack up shots 8 seconds into the shot clock up double digits was an interesting strategy . . .

On the one hand, yea that seems like horrible game management.

On the other hand, I can see an argument that PC needed to catch lightning in a bottle to win that game. They were hot, shots were dropping...

I can also buy the "ride the horse that got you there" strategy as being not so crazy to try and pull off the signature upset win.

That being said, I agree with the assessment that Kim English, the coach, is a major work in progress (kind assessment)

Doesn't matter. Dead ball technical doesn't change possession.
As I mentioned in a previous post. It's the first time I've seen a coach be assessed a T on the way to the locker room at the end of first half. Dead ball T's happen. In my viewing history of BB its rare-but possible. As to disrupting pre-designated possession after the T- I learned something. Providence was predesignated for second half opening possession irrespective of the dead-ball T.

My original response was to answer a question of a poster. I am not a ref-Just casual.

Without that self-own by PC, we lose this game. Hat tip to whoever stripped the PC big of an easy dunk. Lol
It looked to me like PC was , as an old coach of mine used to say, afraid to win. Happens when you are ahead of a superior opponent late and almost try too hard to close them out instead of relying on the things you did all night. A little bit of doubt enters your thoughts and you make a foolish mistake or push too hard or even take your foot off the gas because your subconscious says you shouldn’t be in this position. It is more obvious in individual sports, track, swimming, golf and such but it happens in team sports too.

The problem is they clearly have top 25 talent this season and they're still 8-7.
Do they, though? Or do they have a bunch of pretty good players, several of whom had above average games? They are 8-7 and let’s not pretend the St John’s win was over the 1996 Chicago Bulls. They are what they are.

Mullins wont stay. But can I please remind all of us that in 23 we talked about Hawk as a can't miss prospect? Mullins can benefit from another year to avoid being another Hawk. Get stronger. Work on your dribble and defense. Again, it wont happen. He will be a lottery pick. But that is my take.
Not that him or anyone else will care about my opinion but he'll likely be late lottery in a crazy strong class this year, or he could shoot for top 5 in a really weak class next year...

Obviously I'm not a financial advisor as I casually make recommendations on other people's millions

Why did the kid from South Carolina this last lottery come back for sophomore year?

I went into the game saying Providence has a few NBA players and Hurley said after the game Providence has a few NBA players. They're 8-7 because of terrible coaching not because of their talent.
