Providence post game thread

Samson's two early fouls worked out, forcing Reed into the game.

Considering Providence actually has some decent size in Essandoko and Erhunmwunse, Reed's performance was especially impressive.
It’s good to see Tarris is getting better staying out of foul trouble. With Samson, it is what it is. The big guy needs this to continue.

Another Nowell sighting. He almost lost the ball the first time he touched it but was bailed out by a foul. He then has a TO. Truth be told, whenever he has the ball he is very shaky. Time to give those minutes back to Mahaney.

Have to respectfully disagree. Mahaney isn’t the answer especially if you have an eye on the future.

This hyper critical thing you do with Nowell after every game is strange. He’s a freshman playing his first real minutes of his career in the heart of Big East play. Shouldn’t the junior with major experience look clearly better if you’re going to suggest he play over our more talented freshman?

Theres no upside in playing Mahaney. You play Nowell because he might get better with the experience. Neither is bringing anything besides shaky ball handling at the moment, but giving up on Nowell means more to lose:

Agree 100%

There is no “law of averages” that says you will shoot better after you’ve been in a slump.
Thinking that there is such such a law that could “kick in“ leads to the gambler’s fallacy
Looked a bit deeper into his stats and it’s been very encouraging. Karaban’s last 3 games: 15.7 ppg, 40% from 3 (6-15) - and he’s also made 89% of his FTs since he missed those 2 at ‘Nova.

The calendar has turned to March and UConn has now looked much better for 2 games in a row, which is something that's always happened with Dan Hurley coached teams.

I know the competition hasn't been great the last 2 games, but these are decent teams and games we would have eked out a 6 point win a few weeks ago
Beating Providence there is huge
As we list road games to Seton Hall, Villanova and Xavier . . We also won at Creighton and Marquette.
If anyone predicted that pre season they would have laughed off the board .
If we wpn 2/3 of those room losses and were able to knock the Johnie’s off at our place when they really didn’t play well we would tied for first place . That’s how big those games were .

And the bench to consistently give something, anything. I didn't watch the game and I will be going to sleep real soon, but looking at the box score I am pleased with the win, but really disappointed in Ross, Stewart, and Mahaney.
Ross just goes in there to play good defense and not mess things up on offense.

Ross never looks to shoot and Stewart never looks to put the ball on the floor.

Good lord, this is so pedantic. You know what he’s saying, you know how that phrase is used colloquially, and it’s absolutely a valid point. We have 2.5 years of history showing that AK is not a 10% three point shooter.

When you’re talking about a coin flip, correct….when you’re talking about athletes, there’s no question “slumps” (periods below the mean) and “being in the zone” (periods above the mean) are real and there is a reversion too the mean….”kicking in”

Only 1 team in history of Big East has failed to get a bid going into the Big East tournament with 21 wins.

That was 2024 St. John’s.

The Huskies must win 1 out of the last 2 home games against Marquette and Seton Hall to get to 21. I suggest if it is indeed only 1 win of the final 2 it be the latter.
The committee is not going to keep out a back to back champion. Hurley and Co. are a draw.

st. johns had almost nothing out of conference last year. we have a couple good wins.

I actually think our bench is OK, but if the rest of the bench (minus Reed) and Samson were one player, he would have fouled out in 37 minutes with a stat line of 0-2 fgs, 0-2 3s, 1-3 fts, 0 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 point. Not griping. Good win. I just think that's funny as hell.

Reed's emergence the last few games is the biggest thing going on right now. McNeeley back, Karaban out of his slump, a healthy Hassan Diarra, and Jaylen Stewart playing a solid and workmanlike 6th man, doing all the things that don't show up on the stat line, has UConn back in contention again. If we keep improving from here, anything could happen.

Self edit : Oh yeah, and Solo keeping up that beautiful shooting and getting better at everything.

To be a little fairer it is a Saturday afternoon and it was pretty nice around outside around gametime. I’m gonna guess lots of people were out doing what they had to do.

Ha, yeah, that might be it.
