AD Dave should have this game under protest with a review from the league office. Actually it should have been done with the first meeting when PC got to the line nearly 30 times. PC was pushing, shoving and elbowing on every posession and is doing it because they know they can get away with it.
But they won't get away with it in the Ncaa tournament. That will be their payback.

I really like Andre and have been vocal supporter these last few weeks. But he must learn different parts of the game demand different care when handling the ball. Up by 20 and you want to try to squeeze pass into Sanogo where perhaps it’s 50/50 If he gets it and dunks, that’s fine. But when the game tightens up, ADJUST please.
After a 7-9-4 first half, Andre had 2-2-2 in the second with 3 (I think) turnovers. Need closer to the first.

That's one way to look at it. The team was far too lax with the ball once they went up by 26 and we got too much into prevent mode draining the clock but Hawkins and Karaban looked pretty darn confident knocking down those threes and Newton looked pretty darn confident knocking down those ft's to seal the win.
Newton’s play on the offensive rebound and scramble sealed the game. Thought he was mugged about 3x.

Cooley knows how to work the refs for sure. He has a pretty good rep with them. You can even see when he was talking with one at the end of the game.
He bitched and whined at every rare call against him team when they committed 3x that number. How is isn’t the most hated coach in the Big East I don‘t understand. It’s absurd.

We survived the team that gets the most insane whistle I’ve ever seen. Hopkins did some brillIant, NBA level things out there as well. So quick and agile for a big dude.

Survive and advance. That’s the game. On to Marquette.

Yep, he can't wait for the TV timeouts any longer. When things start going bad call the TO immediately, don't hope you can get an extra possession or two before the scheduled break. That's when things spiral.
Not calling a TO when Newton was hurt was an issue too. What the hell was that?

He was, but he also fouled to get that rebound. The refs swallowed their whistle completely on that play, so I can't complain.

EDIT: More egregious was what PC did to Sanogo and Clingan, the grabbing/hacking down low was absurd.

He did but he did it in a respectful way towards the refs. You can tell they have a mutual respect for each other which helps him the opposite of early season Hurley where he called them a clown and b*tch. Hurley has came a long way. I don’t know if he’ll ever have it in him to try and be friends with refs though lol.

Providence would shoot twelve more free throws than UConn, and UConn would commit twice as many turnovers as Providence. I don't think anybody would hear that and predict a win. We beat PC by 7 in spite of both of those stats. I know it wasn't our best game wire to wire, but it is objectively impressive to win by a decent margin with a FT and turnover margin like that.

This narrative that “UConn Survived” is bogus. While it was nice to have a big lead against a team like Providence, in the second half they were bound to make adjustments. Yes, there were some sloppy moments but those did not occur in a vacuum. They hit some shots that were not falling in the first and they were playing not to lose. While it was a little nerve wracking to see the lead dwindle down, the momentum of the gam was clear after 5 minutes. UConn dominated Providence again. If this level of play and balanced production/defense keeps up, we have a great shot at a BEC.

I am in same boat, a win is a win. No one survived. I don’t like Providence but that‘s a very talented, well coached 20+ win team that can, on a good night, hang with any team in the county.

Yers Providence, was playing catch up but let’s give them credit, many teams would have folded up and they didn’t.

The reason Newton got hurt was because Croswell pushed Newton in the abdomen with his right arm spinning him around and then whacked his knee with his left hand. No foul called was ridiculous.

At risk of sounding like armchair quarterback, right there, Hurley should’ve called a TO, not to talk with team, but to give refs a piece of mind. That’s in game coaching and timing where refs are pliable to hear from coaches.

In case you’ve been wondering like I was why Hassan Diara started instead of Newton , here is what your head coach had to say…

Message received loud and clear, Newton brought his A game today especially at the closing minutes.

Did Brando or Jackson say anything about this during the game? Did they even mention Newton not starting for the 1st time all season? I didn't hear anything but I was watching in my office and had some distractions.

"Our culture is really important," Hurley explained afterwards. "It's a big responsibility in terms of all the things that you do. And it just felt like a small message needed to be sent to Tristen and Nahiem. Whether you're playing for the Big East Tournament or a regular-season game, you've got to have principles and try to teach some larger lessons."

"It was my fault I didn't start," Newton admitted. "I'm not going to come on the bench and hold my head down. (Hurley) told me I was going to get in there, so when I get in there, I'm trying to make an impact every time I'm in a game. Regardless if I start or come off the bench, I'm trying my hardest and trying to make an impact out there."

Are you sure?
That’s what it looked like to me too. He looked to be really upset with himself.

edit/clarification - it was not while the were going through the hand shake line. It was after, as he was walking off the court.

Newton was abused all game and drew one shooting foul I can recall. Sanogo was mauled over and over, especially on the boards.

Ok I just had my first chance to post since the game ended. Obviously some ugly stuff in the last 10 minutes after what looked like the best team in the country for the first 30. And I can pick out a few guys I am very disappointed in as they were way too sloppy and tight at the end.

But instead I will get to the main point I have and my biggest take from this game. Big East officials (I don't mean those with whistles) need to look at this whole 2nd half and try to explain WHY these striped POS find the need to allow a team that deserves nothing, to get back in a game. Saw it coming and said it on the chat. Honestly it was already bad as we took the 26 point lead but our guys were playing so well it didn't matter. But then what is expected to happen did. In other words the team who is WAY behind is becoming more aggressive trying to make plays on both ends but on defense trying to make steals, hold people as to not get open, bump, swat arms push to get rebounds and more. And ALL of that happened and it happened a lot. And while they are not all to blame, the honest to goodness truth is if they call that game fair or as the should, PC never gets closer than 12-14 points because we go to the line a helluva a lot more than 5 freakin times. The BE should be ashamed of how this crew called the 2nd half absolutely embarrassed to ignore so many obvious calls. There were times our guys were fouled 2-3 times on the same play many times over.

Ok having said that here's the good news. The whining cheerleader of a coach for peecee got what he wanted, every call possible. But while that worked out for him, when they needed to be sending us to the line they didn't have enough fouls to do so LOL. So screw him and that dreadful crew of striped morons out there today!

Next....

Andre missing that free throw late ticked me off as it was a continuation of his complete lack of focus in the last 10 minutes. He knows. , , in handshake line.

That might have been about his missed front end foul shot.

BTW, he is a prettty darn good ball handler. However, he always has had the tendency to throw some low percentage or just plain bad passes.
Seems when pressured he likes to throw the ball away too fast which is a problem if he is going to be the second ball handler breaking the press. He needs to be smarter with the ball and has too good of a handle to be that lazy passing the ball.

Weird game for sure to see us play great ball for 30 minutes and then collapse by turning over the ball and settling for 3s. Once we settled down and ran some offense we we better the last few minutes. We can't have this against Marquette as they will bury us as they love to play fast pace game.
