Premium Ways the B12 Can Die in a Fire Thread

Big 12 prefers four over two. Can confirm through three different sources and it was discussed earlier this evening. Looking at 14.

He is the guy that was firm on expansion happening when everyone else was saying no expansion.

It is believed all the candidates have been made to sign a sort of confidentiality agreement with the Big 12 regarding the process. However, a source at one of those 18 said the belief is the Big 12 will make a "cut" of the 18 candidates by the end of the month.

That would be followed by a more detailed interview with the Big 12 at a neutral site

"My understanding is everybody who has expressed interest is going to get a call [from the Big 12]," a source at one expansion hopeful said.

While the outside world is speculating on which and how many schools will join, there continues to be chatter the league may stay with 10 members.

"I think that's possible," said one person closely involved in the process.

Another source at a Big 12 school said expansion at this point is "a long putt."

Colleague Jon Solomon pointed out a while ago what has now become a speculative conversation piece within the league. ESPN/Fox could pay the Big 12 not to expand. Any number less than the pro rata amount the rights holders would be contractually bound to pay in expansion would be a net savings.

The point is that everything is still on the table. Lawyers? Confidentiality agreements? In these dog days of summer, bark away. Any expansion speculation can't be wrong.

"At this point, I don't know here the hell everything is." said a source at a Big 12 school.

The ISU president did an interview with students. The expansion question comes up at 26 min mark. The interesting part is that schools are now pitching themselves to B12 leadership. Will whittle down and then decide whether to expand at all, by 2 or by four. Expects process to wrap up by....Christmas.

First criteria: academics, then athletics, markets, history and whether they played fairly (lol)

Figured a direct live quote from someone who votes is premium worthy

Sounds like zero, two, four all on the table (at least as of today).

Big 12 expansion plans include an invitation to UConn to put its Big 12 pitch together
Big 12 adds UConn to official list

>>According to sources familiar with the process, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby has sent an E-Mail to University of Connecticut President Susan Herbst, and explaining the procedures UConn should follow to formally apply for membership.

Numerous–perhaps as many as 20–emails are expected to be sent by the Big 12 as it winds its way through the steps of expanding from 1o to perhaps 12 or even 14 schools. Various media outlets have reported that Houston has also been officially contacted by the Big 12. The rest of this article is available to subscribers only – to become a subscriber click here.<<

Industry sources familiar with the process consistently say Houston is one of three schools best positioned, along with Cincinnati and BYU. The Big 12 could expand by two -- currently the most likely option -- or add four schools or stand pat. Eight votes from the 10 Big 12 presidents are needed.

East Carolina says it was informed by Big 12 it is no longer an expansion candidate

Mark B. gets his information from sources. He may not always be right, and he is often wrong, but I would say in 99% of the cases, he prints what people in some key position have told him. When he's guessing or speculating, he lets the reader know he is guessing or speculating.

When he says he got it from sources, I have no reason to believe that a source in a key position did not give it to him.
