Paige's Wings Page (merged thread)

The worst possible team for Paige to have gone to...is the place she's in. She was, IMO, relatively non existent out there because Arike has to have the ball in her hands and does nothing on offense until she gets it. And if she didn't have it, Carrington was going on 1 on 1.

Looking at the shot attempts, Beuckers had 10, Siegrist had 10, Hines-Allen had 9, Carrington had 10 and Ogunbowale had 12. Seems like everyone is getting a chance to do something offensively. Assist numbers could be better but with Ogunbowale leading with 4, not sure how it can be seen she's being ball dominant.

Page is definitely on the wrong team. Her skills are wasted with that style of offense. The second half was horrible to watch. There was poor ball movement and terrible shot selection. Most of the Dallas team just wanted to stand around until they could go one-on-one. The ball stopped after the first or second pass. Once Minnesota got its defense in synch and tightened up in the paint, Dallas looked like a team that won't win a game this year. The Valkaries looked better.

Paige played a solid game, especially for her first timeout in "real game competition" in the W. You are correct in that Dallas has a couple of "ball hogs" who are me first players. Understanding that the shot clock is shorter in the pro's, but dang...pass the ball a couple of times!

Dallas has some talent, with some very strong-willed personalities. And it's a group with little familiarity with each other. The question is can that new coach do something with them. Not easy. He's had no head coaching experience. I think that was obvious in the 2nd half. The Lynx, on the other hand, have been together now for a few years, as was the team Reeve had during their championship years. That group almost won it all last year.

The Wings have a bunch of new players on their roster who are trying to work together with a handful of Wings veterans. In addition, they really don’t have a strong paint presence which makes them vulnerable to teams that attack the basket effectively.

For the rest of the season, the Wings are going to be a work in process. Hopefully, the team will get a little better every time they take the court, and be a much better team by the end of the season.

I’m sure that the Wings have a multi-year plan to build their roster through the draft and/or free agent market. Paige is the 1st piece of the new roster. If the Wings can’t get it done, I have no doubt that Paige will find a team where she can chase a championship.

Great point. Look at Indiana for a comparison. Last season, they started off rough, albeit it the schedule they had for the first half didn't help. The second half was way better for them and they made the playoffs. Major changes were made in the off-season and they're being looked at as a threat this year.

It's way too early to say whether this team is or isn't the right one for Paige. The team still needs to find themselves both on the court and the front office. It would be no different had she landed in LA or Washington. The reactions over one game with this team don't make sense for me however, it is what it is.

Keep in mind that Caitlyn Clark's team last year struggled early on. I'm not saying that Paige and Clark are the same player, because clearly they're not, but I am saying that it will take time for the wings to find equilibrium and figure out how to best utilize the personnel they have on team.

That was a tough watch. Was happy to see Paige score early and hit some midrange. But most of her shot attempts were contested 1v1 plays. Dallas has very little if any ball movement. Watching the game I was adjusting from UConn ball back to the W style. But watching LA vs GS I was reminded it’s not just this 1v1 ball that Dallas plays.

Poor fit for Paige in theory. She may be able to get her teammates to buy into a more selfless team ball. But doesn’t help they have a coach with relatively zero experience. Didn’t get any insight into what this team wants to be, something that was clear from other teams that played last night.

Noticed in the second half the response to a Minnesota run was immediate hero ball. Players missed Paige and others wide open off penetration. And the defense seemed to give in. Will be interesting to see how it unfolds.

In addition to the excellent points you made, I'd add that Caitlin was also Indiana's second straight number one pick. Not that she wouldn't have been a transformational player by herself, but adding her alongside Aliyah Boston gives them an amazing young core to build on for years to come. In this analogy, Paige is the Aliyah; she's the foundation. I don't see a Caitlin in next year's draft class, but there is a Lauren, an Azzi, a Flau'jae, etc. As you alluded to, last night's game was just the beginning for this version of the Wings.

Thank you. Long term, this could be such a different team. And Miller has put together highly competitive teams that made the Championship finals. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt versus assuming the worst from the start.

Interesting side note, the new High Performance Women's Director for Canada Basketball stated in an interview they had considered Miller to be their head coach for the National team. He's highly regarded on an international level in addition to the WNBA. He would have been a great choice to revamp that program had he been interested.

Curt Miller certainly has a long and successful history as a WBB coach and executive. But Chris Koclanes has an extremely light resume that includes no prior head coaching experience, and coaching the Wings is not conducive for on-the-job training.
