OT - The Boneyard Greatest Movie of All-Time Tournament

I also love movies but you won't find many that were mentioned that I truly believe are GOAT or top 10 material. Some "oddball" choices:

The Matrix
Superbad
Toy Story
Monty Python & the holy Grail
Iron Man (for reasons beyond the movie itself)

So far there have been 18 responses through the Google form, and 18 unique choices for #1. For anyone who missed it please put your choices in by clicking the link in the OP or below.

Boneyard Greatest Movie of All-Time Entry!
Oops, totally missed that we have to submit a separate form.

Just submitted mine.

It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
These are interesting choices especially back to back.

Would love to see this broken down by genre in the offseason. More fun to see Airplane vs. Blazing Saddles than either one of them vs. The Godfather.

Hard to vote against the big dramas even when the comedy or action flick its up against might have been perfect for what it was trying to do.

.-.
If you don’t put The Dark Knight in there, that’s highly unfortunate.
I should have included that and Jaws on mine. Not sure what I would bump, but both of those belong imo.

Started a genre and two lucrative franchises. Very watchable movie regardless.
It's such an important movie. It was very good at the time and it holds up extremely well.

(No Order)

A Few Good Men
Dark Knight
The Truman Show
Apollo 13
Zodiak
Good Will Hunting
Shooter
FightClub
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Dazed and Confused
Shawshank
Friday Night Lights
GoodFellas
Happy Gilmore
The Green Mile
Inglorious Bastards

Honorable mention:
Gangs of New York

Thanks for the two mentions of "Dazed and Confused." They reminded me that either "Slacker" or "Waking Life" would be my Richard Linklater entry. Also, thanks for the reminder to put mine into the Google form. I might actually do that before the deadline.

Two non-fictions:

Powaqattsi
Thin Blue Line

So many . . .

For me the two Linklalater choices would be "Before Midnight" and "Boyhood" with "Waking Life" a close third.
I also like "Thin Blue Line."

Also, are we choosing what we think are the greatest movies or our favorite movies? For instance, I would rather watch Blazing Saddles than Citizen Kane but the latter is clearly the superior film.

Submitted my list. Saving Private Ryan tops my list followed by Unforgiven. A couple that I forgot about and got left off or not considered - Fargo, Memento, American Beauty, Patton, The Right Stuff, The Killing Fields, and Dr. Strangelove. Others have mentioned a lot of great movies. I went heavy on comedies. That genre doesn't get a lot of recognition on "Best" and "Greatest" lists, but they end up being the movies that I will rewatch most often. Has to mean something. Right?

I debated this very thing about Talladega Nights, which I am always happy to watch no matter when I catch it. But then I thought better of putting it on the Greatest Movie of All-Time Tournament thread.

metropolis
king kong (1933), grapes of wrath (my #2), citizen kane
streetcar named desire, the birds
soylent green, a boy named charlie brown
jaws, apocalypse now, blues brothers, manhattan
hotel new hampshire, ran, head office (my #1), less than zero, running man, caddyshack,
ghostbusters, ferris bueller's day off
legends of the fall, hoop dreams, men in black
an inconvenient truth, ratatouille, talladega nights, grand budapest hotel, crazy rich asians.
(I can't count-got my shoes on...)

It's simple. I love movies, you probably like movies. I want you to give me a list of up to 16 of your absolute favorite films.

Right. Collectively we will then decide what’s Greatest among them.

Boyhood great in concept, poor in execution. I'm probably in the minority but I found it boring and the characters unlikable.

A Thin Blue Line was probably groundbreaking for the time but after seeing so many amazing true crime docs in recent years Thin Blue Line didn't hold up great for me when I watched it recently.

I didn't spend a lot of time of the list. My approach was to list 16 movies that I'd think about watching if they on and then which would I choose if multiple ones were on. That list would vary day to day but I thought it was a good proxy for which films are my favorites.

I submitted a list. Not in any order. Even when office staff was clamoring for me to assist them with things I yelled "NOT NOW!!!!!"

A few good ones I havent seen mentioned:
Reservoir Dogs
The Warriors
Super Troopers
Jackie Brown

Totally agree. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen besides the characters aging, and nothing did. Boring.

I liked the Warriors when it was first released. I tried rewatching it within the last couple of years and couldn't get through it. Best thing about it now is how campy it is.

Shawshank Redemption

Harold and Maude

Godfather

Being There

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

My Cousin Vinny

A Few Good Men

The Player

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

The Great Escape

The Big Lebowski

Being John Malkovich

American Beauty

High Fidelity

Godfather II
Youre the only list with The Big Lebowski... The ‘Yard should be ashamed of themselves.

Lots of good ones already mentioned, but here are a few that are not so far.

On the Waterfront
Young Frankenstein
A Night at the Opera
Bridge on the River Kwai
Monty Python & the Holy Grail
The Score
Midnight Run
The Princess Bride

And I'm sure I'm missing a few also.

Talledega Nights is a masterpiece. There's nothing worth changing in the movie and it hits on all it's targets. These types of movies often go unappreciated even though their execution is flawless

The genius of this thread is that some of these movies will do really well in head to head match ups. Midnight Run and the Princess Bride didn't make my list but they have a shot to upset higher seeds.

Don’t worry Lebowski is well represented, even if I don’t think much of it.

No particular order and I could only cut it to 17. If need be I can cut it to 16 and put them in order-

The Deer Hunter
Lone Star
The Wild Bunch
Dazed and Confused
Cinema Paradiso
Midnight Run
True Romance
City of God
Deliverance
Once Upon a Time in America
There Will be Blood
Paths of Glory
Matewan
McCabe and Mrs. Miller
Pan's Labyrinth
Heat
Amores Perros

Need more time to come up with my list; but, I just wanted to show my appreciation for listing Once Upon a Time in America.

Not sure if it’ll end up making my list, but the full version of this movie is a *gosh darn* masterpiece.

The edit that ended up being released is one of the biggest travesties in Hollywood history.
