So at the end of the day we agree but you thought it was helpful to create fallacies of what my position was, which included a thinly veiled accusation of being a racist.

Good job.

I didn't create any fallacies, I brought up his past history of racial discrimination and you brought up him employing a man who later sued and I'm still not sure why you did. Deflection? Seems like it to me...

Have a good night.

Hypocrites all. He's fried and he should be, but his history speaks for itself. Yet LA NAACP was ready to give him their lifetime achievement award! In fact al sharp ton was to speak on his behalf! Now everyone is outraged by his comments. C'mon folks, doesn't anyone have a moral compass here? Not saying previous com mentors are wrong or right, but racism is wrong and we all know that. Unfortunately, there are those among us who play this to their personal advantage and THAT pisses me off!

Does a few good deeds (whatever the award was for) give you a free pass for other, not so good deeds?

I don't think so...

Wait... so magic is friends with her right? And his group is lining up to buy the team...... see what im getting at? Is it possible?

.-.
As for the public/private thing. Once something becomes known, it's public and subject to everything that goes with that.

As for the penalty, it's a PR home run and I fear a bit of wishful thinking. It will be difficult to oust someone from a billion dollar enterprise without one heck of a fight. He may sell his team to a family member and could apply for reinstatement in the future. The one thing the NBA has going for it is that I get the impression this guy never had many friends amongst NBA ownership, so they may get enough votes to oust him if their jurisdiction to do so might be a bit shaky. Marge Schott had the same problem, but was eventually forced out. Steinbrenner, while not involved in a racial scandal (sort of), was able to comeback.

Good luck getting the $$$ in any form other than withholding TV disbursements.

This is just mind boggling... the man is a liberal democrat who was donating money to the NAACP employs mostally black people. He was jealous of the much younger better looking black people his GF was hanging out with and made wrong insensitive remarks in private. Imagine the stuff we would hear if we listened to private conversations between black players? There is a huge double standard. How many times has jay-Z made s e xist, homophobic, or racist comments on his tracks?

Couldn't agree with you more on this.
The guy made a comment in private, while he does have a checkered past, I haven't heard boo from the NBA hierarchy, owners or players over the past 35 years. Mark Jackson is telling fans to boycott games yet 7 months ago he was auditioning for the Clippers HC job. Doc Rivers could have looked at this guys past but instead takes the $21M and runs with it.
Look - this is a no win for the NBA or the idiot Sterling. The NBA is full of hypocrites and Sterling is a proven jerk.
Chris Paul talks crap but takes the guy's millions every year.
Larry Johnson says in public (not behind closed doors) that the players should form an all black league. Where is the outrage on that?
Sterling is gone and should be for the trail of idiotic behavior not only for this statement.
Spike Lee has made a living being a racist yet the NBA takes pride in his courtside seats.
From this point forward the league had better pay close attention to what everyone says and be ready to react with the same level of punishment. I can see this opening up law suit heaven.
The guy is gone - good riddance, just play the damn games and get on with it.
The world isn't a perfect place.

Did Magic actually know her, or did she just have her picture taken with him?

How about jim irsay. This guy pops a bunch of pills, drinks, hops in a car and kills somebody and he isnt banned for life??

Thats the million $ question she recorded 100 hours and this mildly racist recording was the best they came up with.... could this be a set up?

Boy are you naive.

I have added a bit more to the original.

Wow. You were being serious. I read your post. Quite the Pelican Brief, you might really be on to something. Any time you've got Donald Trump and Rush Limbaugh in your camp you know you're close to breaking a big story!

Honestly, man. I have no idea what point you were trying to make. That this is a convenient opportunity for the league to get rid of a guy who's been a cancer for years and years? Uh, yes. That there are a long list of potential buyers for any NBA team, let alone one in one of the biggest markets in the world. Yes again. And? What is the conspiracy here?

Are you suggesting that Guggenheim Capital Partners called up this broad to cook up this story to open up an opportunity for them to buy the Clippers? If so, I'd take a breath before you call someone else naive.

That's the question that absolutely no one with a brain gives a _____ about. Seriously, people. How dumb are you trying to make us look?

Among all the hype, I'm looking for real 'damage' here. Didn't notice that he was in any violation of contracts.
the players are protesting, but none are sitting out any games. Doc Rivers said that "if it were up to me", the fans should stay away from the games. But if he is so outraged, why doesn't he stay away from the games? Those $20M pay checks must outweigh any personal skin in this game.

Let's follow the other money.

The woman who spilled the beans is a case in herself. According to Yahoo News and curt papers, she changed her name from Perez to Stiviano in 2010 as she had not "yet been fully accepted because of my race."

She is being sued by Sterling's wife as Stiviano “engages in conduct designed to target, befriend, seduce and then entice, cajole, borrow from, cheat and/or receive as gifts transfers of wealth from wealthy older men.” The suit charges that Rochelle Sterling believed the $1.8 million duplex in which Stiviano now resides was being purchased in the Sterlings' names, and that Stiviano has received gifts including four cars (two Bentleys, one Ferrari, and one Range Rover) and about $240,000 in "living expenses." The allegation, then, is that Donald Sterling gave Stiviano about $2 million in community property without Rochelle Sterling's knowledge. Do I smell motivation??

What is startling is that, while no teams were for sale, Magic Johnson and his partners, Guigenheim Partners, have conveniently stepped forward to express interest in a team, and in 3 days, the NBA has decided to dump Sterling, creating just such an opportunity. Do I smell a bum's rush??

Oh, and Donald Trump agrees that Sterling was set up by a very bad girlfriend.

So how much did the Gugie team slip her???

Lastly, the race card bait. The ample PR being supplied frames the race issue. The guy probably said it, etc, etc. But with 30 years of apparent dismay and no action, why now? The race card pros have chimed in. Yesterday, Rush Limbaugh pointed to the hypocrisy of Jesse 'hymie town' Jackson (as he called him on his show) chiming in. Even the pres had time to ignore Bengazi to add his 2 cents. The $64 question is: did I miss comments by Al Sharpton - the premier shake-down artist?? In this environment, race sells, and everyone is talking about race, and therefor distracted from the . Bait and switch the narrative. Doug Henning would be pleased! Banned for life?

Follow the . But I wonder what he can get for the team?? Stay tuned to see how many bidders there are.

Sorry you are all looking at the babe in the bleachers while home plate was stolen.

I'm sorry, I threw up on my keyboard when you brought up Donald Trump. Like that scumbucket is a moral compass? C'mon.
I wish the Scots had drawn and quartered that when he visited there since nobody here seems inclined.
I don't get how a guy who doesn't pay his debts and walks over whomever he chooses is seen as a pillar of capitalism.

Ban and forcing him to sell team is fine.

If Magic Johnson tries to buy the team... I think that makes him look really bad.

I guess we are all bonded by our shared UConn fandom, but WOW! We have some serious POS on this forum. I love these threads that reveal posters true colors.
See, I feel the opposite. I hate these threads, and hate that they're just relevant enough to basketball that they aren't shuttled over to the Cesspool immediately.

Dont go there. Dont do it. Im not that person. The best man at my wedding was my best friend floyd a black man. But this whole thing feels fishy to me. I dont trust her. She recorded 100 hours. the recording I heard sounded like an old senial jealous man whos taking shots at the younger men his gf is hanging out with one of which is an iconic figure for your in town rival. Not a wildly racist rant. I dont believe the man is a racist.

He is a registered Republican and donated money to democratic politicians for his business interests. Just saying

What don't you get about the fact that this isn't an isolated incident?

Honestly, if not for the context of Sterling's prior transgressions, this situation would make me uncomfortable. I'm firmly in the camp that believes Sterling is a racist POS, but I don't like the idea of personal conversations being broadcast to the public and punishments being distributed as if the comments were on record. If it were anybody but Sterling, I would still find the comments deplorable, but I'd be opposed to any drastic action being taken by the league because of the circumstances under which the comments were made. In other words, when a situation like this arises, I'm generally in favor of letting the market dictating retribution.

At this point, though, Sterling's comments only signal a sad, inevitable resolution to an owner that was never going to exit in graceful terms. And really, the comments reflect poorly on Stern because it never should have gotten to this point.

This is the first post I've seen directly state that Sterling is not a racist.

Take a mulligan here.

The desire to defend a person, and to call what he said "mildly racist," just baffles me.

And that's on wildly misguided and ill-informed end of the scale.

We've got other people on this thread citing Donald Trump as an authority figure and another who actually used the words "black vermin."

I'm someone who thinks we should be careful throwing around the term "racist" to describe people. Instead, I'm generally in favor of pointing out racist "things." Not everyone who says something racist is a racist. Often, they are just ignorance. When we call everyone who says a racist thing a racist, it flattens them in ways that end dialogues, and it devalues actual racists. You know, the ones who do (more importantly) and say (still significant) the types of things that Sterling has. Or people turn people into non-humans by calling them "vermin." That is legitimately scary.

I dont know the mans past but I listened to the recordings I think they are mildly racist at best. It was a man whos jealous of the men his gf is hanging out with. There was no racist rant dropping the n word. The whole conversation was dictated by her steering him in a certain direction. It takes a certain kind of crazy to record a private conversation and sell it to the media. The media blitz was a total overreaction. Dont call me a racist dont drag me through the mud thats not me

"It's better to know and be disappointed, than to never know and always wonder."

Then maybe you should educate yourself, because you're making yourself look foolish right about now.
