One of my cats has clubbed front paws and one of the effects of this is that her innermost claws grow extremely thick and turn inward, cutting her pads. I was clipping her nails tonight and everything went well on her left paw but when I cut the nail on her right paw it re-opened a scab and she's now bleeding. She's a semi-feral cat and is 18 years old so I'm reluctant to take her to the vet unless it's an absolute emergency. Does anyone have any experience in this area or know what I should do?

Keep pressure on the bleeding until it stops. Take the cat to the vet if you love it. The cat would take you to the MD is you needed it.

I'm sure she would, she is a quality cat. My reason for not wanting to bring her there is largely due to her age and her unpredictable behavior around most humans. The last time I took her was quite an ordeal for her. Fortunately I was able to stop the bleeding and she's looking pretty good right now. Any sign of danger though and it's off to the vet.

Semi feral? Are you one of those crazy cat people? Or did you "adopt" her at some point from the streets?

Semi feral? indoor/outdoor cat? 18 is pretty old even for a indoor only cat. I would ask the vet how to proceed.

Basically I went to an animal shelter 4 years ago and asked which cat would be least likely to be adopted, so they brought me over to a 14 (at the time) year old cat with clubbed front paws (yet still managed to rough people up), torticollis, and IBS. I didn't want her to die in a shelter, and in the years that I've had her, she's come around to the point that she's friendly toward me and everyone in the immediate family, but still doesn't trust anyone else. The litterbox cleaning sessions are hellish, but other than that she's been a great addition to the family.

Nice job. We picked up two shelter cats a few years ago, one had to be put down last year due to kidney failure but the other kicks ass. And I'm a dog person.
