the gender issue is why i suspect she did not play in the olympics, but that is on the international organizations for caring about stupid stuff like that.

You don't see how gay athletes coming out publicly would be inspirational to young, gay kids who are traditionally heckled, beat up and abused at school? Ok.

Dont be an imbecile that is not what i said.

"this is not news worthy or surprising. as far as this being inspirational to other girls and boys to feel the confidence to come out is pointless"

It's not pointless. It's helpful. It sounds like you were saying itbwasnt was inspirational to kids struggling with their sexual identity which is silly. Perhaps I misunderstood. What were you saying was pointless?

Good for her, good for the gay community. I almost thought this was common knowledge already....I mean, let's be real, she has very man-like qualities. I always knew she was gay. But to come out and say it and support the community is a good thing for people's happiness and feelings of acceptance.

Like Jody Foster, Griner handled this with taste. No histrionics. No politics.

shame one you. do you think that was easy for her? i would think that the #1 women's basketball program would be more sensitive to the idea of gay athletes. most likely uconn has had gay women players, like it or not. this thread is an abomination.

Just heard Bernie Fine was gay too and actually it was him, not his wife, sleeping with all of the Orange recruits and players!!;)

Since when is it big news for a Man to prefer Women?

I'm sorry but sammydabiz just happened to say what many of you thought.........let's cut the holier than thou BS.........

Do I feel sorry for her because of these assumptions and labels? Hell yeah but I feel sorry for many people who others joke about and sometimes the timing can be pretty funny......geez:rolleyes:

She wouldn't get abused had she attended UConn. Geez..................as if our closets are clean, or free from 'big feet' female ballers.

As for the jokes "she's rich bitch!"

It's big deal to be gay at a school like Baylor. I doubt she was encouraged to talk about her sexuality and may have been conditioned to keep quiet about it.

If that's the case, I wonder why she would choose to attend that school if they were not going to support her.

It would be a good question to ask her, but if i had to guess, I suspect she liked the coach (Mulkey), liked the tradition (Baylor already won a NC), liked the other classmates Mulkey was recruiting (there were terrific complementary players in her class recruited to Baylor), and Griner's from Houston, so only 3 hours to Waco. Very close for family to see her play.

Will be really interested to watch how the school markets her moving forward.

Its been done already so many times its pointless. gay kids arent all of a sudden going to walk around being proud to be gay because some athlete says its ok. you know what inspires gay kids to come out? acceptance of themselves and others. Not some athlete whom everyone already knew was gay mentioning it in an interview. These things are given way too much credit when the fact is the gay kid that was scared to come out today will still be tommorow even after seeing her come out in some interview.
When someone says "i just want to be an inspiration to others to let them know its ok to be yourself" what theyre really saying is "im tired of living this lie and i just want to live the way i want to live but there might be some backlash so ill say im doing it to inspire kids and not my own needs so it looks like im selfless and inspirational". has she been active in the gay community? has she been doing work with gay teens? i doubt it but of course now she will to keep appearances. its crap honestly.

Just leave Griner alone! She never asked for all this attention. She's obviously been one of the best Women's Basketball players the past 4 years. She's set a new standard in Women's basketball. She's put up with more abuse (aka ) from opposing fans than anyone of us could ever imagine in our lifetimes. I've read many, many, many nasty posts against her on the ESPN boards, only to be baffled about so much hate. Obviously, she stronger than most of us can realize. To come out like this, just proves how tough she is. I admire her for being so brave. Good for her! No, Excellent for her!

I think that a story like this is still somewhat "news-worthy", but I can't wait until the day when it's not. I can't wait until the day when kids are allowed to feel comfortable in their own skin, and nobody gives a damn who they desire to be romantic with.

I'm at least pleased that we seem to be at a turning point in history, though, where many people are saying, "That's fine..."

Best Comments on Griner: the politicians on both sides of the gay issue lose.

>>In the SI interview, Griner acknowledges that she's been open about her sexual identify for years. And--concurrently, not incongruously--she has consistently reported on how loved and accepted she's been by the Baylor Family.

Mark Osler seems to find an inconsistency between a school that both stands against homosexuality and yet loves homosexuals. And he seems to think that Griner's acceptance at Baylor is a sign that Baylor's opposition to homosexuality is destined to end.

Griner and Baylor just don't seem to be playing by the media script, however. Maybe the real story is that a faith community can remain both faithful to their principles and loving to their neighbors at the same time.<<

Brave? brave is a child fighting cancer and still having a smile on his face. brave is injured people helping others in a terrorist attack. brave is sacrificing your life to save children from a madman. brave is not telling someone you like to have sex with your own gender in a time where it is no longer looked at as taboo like in the past.

Its easy because faith/religion is the worlds greatest hypocrisy.

To the losers making jokes about this young woman, grow up. You aren't funny or clever, hopefully at some point in your lives you will figure it out.

I'm 53 and have life figured out pretty damn good........jokes are made of everyone, ethnic and alike. This is a board for discussion and fun, with a little of creativity thrown in and this was not the first time. sammy felt the time for some humor who some do find it to be just that without any ill intent for the woman and that's their choice. When you figure out people have a choice to laugh about it or dislike the intentions then maybe you'll have it figured out!! I laughed and I know I'm not a "loser"........;)

I love basketball and I enjoy watching good players excell at their craft. All the other crap is just crap.
