Super John is one of just 3 players to have his number retired at New Mexico State.
 
Super John is also one of only 4 players to have his NJ Nets # retired, the guy is pretty legendary.

I played football against Scott Burrell--he looked like a pro athlete compared to almost everyone else. Big strong fast and good. There was a kid named Rich Austin who played on our team 5-11 230 at 16 years old with tremendous speed agility could dunk a basketball easy etc... almost impossible to tackle him yet he just gave it away by not doing the right thing if you can understand what Im saying. A true waste of physical talent that so few have. He wouldve been a pro athlete if he gave a 75% effort. Now only a few know his name from way back when.
 
I always laugh remembering jeff bagwell went to Xavier, because every time we had an assembly when I was there the joke was that it was because Jeff bagwell was visiting
 
Not sure if anyone mentioned Lindy Remigino. If not, you should. Won the 1952 Olympic gold medal in the 100. Also won a gold in the 4X 100 relay that year.

Saw Starling a few years ago working at F&L in Middletown. Came over and told some stories, seemed like a good guy.
 
First two names that came to mind when I saw the thread title were Bobby Valentine and Rico Brogna.

Actually, it's Joan Joyce, basketball player on the national team, pro golfer, volleyball player and softball pitcher for the national champion Brakettes. She struck out Ted Williams in 1961 and Hank Aaron in 1978 (article).

Sorry, I know you knew John, but Bill Rodgers has 4 Bostons, 4 New York's, and won both of them and the Third grand slam of Marathons (which is in Fukuoka Japan) in the same year (He is the only person to do so). In 1978 he won 27 out of 30 races he entered. 22 marathon wins overall. Isn't great CT has produced great runners, But Bill was the best we ever had.

easily the most underrated athlete. She hold the pro golf record (male or female) for lowest amount of puts needed to complete a round of golf. I also believe she once scored 67 points in a basketball game.
 
My vote goes for Joan Joyce. An amazing athlete on one of the most dominant softball teams of all time with Bertha Ragan.The mens team wasn't too shabby either.
 
Joan Joyce is arguably the best female athlete of her generation and one of the best of all-time.
 
Joan Joyce is currently women's softball coach at FAU in Boca Raton and also is the golf coach. Not sure if she coaches men or women in golf. Went to FAU softball game a year ago or so and spoke to her. She is Miss personality, very gracious. Her Dad was at the game. He's 90 something and in a wheel chair but she said he tries to make all the home games. ABC had a "Superstar" show many years ago and she was on the show. IMO JJ is the greatest woman's athlete ever from CT.

Speaking of Joan Joyce and the Meriden Falcons, Diana Nyad who just stopped her attempt to swim from Cuba to the US, used to hang around in Meriden with some of the team back in the late 70's during the summer. Just some trivia.....I was working the summer at the Holiday Inn in Meriden where many of the girls had rooms while playing and used to see many of them around there and the town. Joan was very nice as were most of them, some great partners too (the bell hop knows all!!)....LOL ;).........

What the hell kind of nonsense is this???? There was a vague rumor of Bagwell thrown out there by some idiot and now it has roots to mean something???? I have never ever heard any RELIABLE source even hint that Bagwell ever took any performance enhancing drugs and you throw it out like it's factual info????? I think it takes super balls to incriminate someone who has always been a stellar light in the community he played (Houston) with charities and all kinds of good will and who was always a highly skilled ballplayer throughout his college and minor league career. I wish I knew what you do specifically so I could denigrate you like you so casually did Bagwell. Maybe if someone threw some nonsense about you that was so socially abhorrent that you were cast as a deviate for the rest of your life and there wasn't a hint of truth to it you might appreciate how it is to just throw out remarks like that. Pretty sad stuff there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Throw out anything you like about me I could care less buzzy.........I am sorry if I stirred some emotion within you but this is the BY and that is one person, or to quote you "idiot's" opinion. He may have done some great things in the community and for that he should be put on a pedestal as I am sure he was. And he may have gained weight during the steroid era like the Hulk because he worked out so hard in H-K, but I am entitled to my opinion and his body looked a whole lot different when he started playing a whole lot better. Always a good player? No doubt........Always a good guy? I guess.......suddenly a HOFer out of nowhere? I'd say no.....prove me wrong buzzy or just relax!! .......................... wow "socially abhorrent" because I believe someone may have used and expressed it on the BY? Funny stuff........He and Ken Caminitti were pretty good friends!!!! LOL........worried about ya buzz boy!!

Suddenly a Hall of Famer out of nowhere? Umm try again, Bagwell should have been a no doubt first ballot Hall of Famer, it's utter nonsense that these out of touch writers aren't voting for him simply because they think he took roids, when there is absolutely zero proof. This is what drives me nuts about these writers, they are playing a guessing game over who they think and don't think took roids and that is so wrong. I have no clue whether Bags juiced or not and neither do these writers. He clearly gained a good deal of muscle in his career but this is definitely possible if you are serious about weight training, I've always lifted a little but never took it seriously or had a set schedule, since I've stepped it up the last couple of years I've gained 20 pounds and clearly look more built. It's so unfair to play a guessing game when it comes to a guy's career.
 
It is clear they have a right to "play a guessing game..." and who could blame them. But in all reality it is on Bud Selig and baseball not the players............

While it is unfair to assume just because it was part of the era, to most who watched it is obvious who was guilty. Sorry but from my view no-brainer. Rooting for someone to prove otherwise because he's a CT kid but to me there's a lot of numbers which were aided on this stat sheet!!! Innocent until proven guilty....nah not in baseball anymore...too easy!!! Guess you guys believe Braun too:eek:

It's clear they have the right to play a guessing game? They have a right to do anything with their vote, they can keep a guy out if they don't like his mustache, it doesn't make it the morally right thing to do. You can tell who and who didn't take roids? Sorry but that is ridiculous.

It is I agree and you know what I am guessing no doubt as are the writers......and I do apologize if the era sways my "guess" and I'm wrong. But if he was so sure he was innocent I'm wondering why someone of his stature because his numbers were so solid, didn't step up while he was still playing and ask for those who weren't using to vote for a radical change for proof??? I know if I was that good and innocent I would've walked in and asked them to test me every damn day to prove I was just a damn good player!!

Sorry super john, can't believe otherwise........didn't complain until he broke down and retired!!

Oh and I guess I am wrong because there's no way you can tell everyone who takes roods, I mean Palmiero I wouldn't have guessed. But the likes of Sosa, McGwire, Bonds, Incaviglia, Caminitti and many others were no-brainers............the Astro's were Oakland's answer for the NL...........

Do you know anything about the players union? You know how many players went to officials and asked to be tested every day, the answer is zero. Your argument is really lame, you are clearly assigning guilt to players just because you think they took steroids with no proof whatsoever. I'm glad that our justice system is not designed to operate this way, people like you would be finding a lot of people guilty with no evidence.
