No kidding on the butter. Drizzling butter on a steak is almost cheating. It's like adding bacon to something. Of course it'll taste better.

A steak only requires two seasonings -- salt and pepper. If you want to brush it with oil to get a better sear, I'm OK with that too.
 
A bit of garlic powder with the salt and pepper, try it.

Depends on the cut.

Filet - Absolutely correct.

Anything from a sirloin or less can stand to be tenderized and/or marinated.
