Oskar Giltay Commits to UConn

The analytics vs. eye test are super divergent here. I'm excited to see what the staff is able to do with him.
I don't agree. The reels of him (and yes I know they are highlights) showed a quicker, smarter player than I was expecting with good timing and instincts for rebounding, blocks, steals, and defense in general. He doesn't show much offense prowess to create his own shot, but looks like he can put the ball in the basket when the opportunity is there. He is not flashy whatsoever, but he doesn't look like a stiff, and I really don't care if he's a plus player with defense, screening, and rebounding.

Probably not, but don't forget about how NIL is changing that - if some of these kids become household names (like Mullins & Haugh), the marketing side of NIL is pretty lucrative and can keep them here longer. Neither strike me as high lottery types.
Absolutely true. Though I'd still say 4 years is pretty unlikely. But assuming the kind of performance that merits NBA draft consideration, is no longer a lock for leaving ASAP

Looks like a UK fan. Every time they whiff on a recruit, they're salivating for the next recruit on the conveyor belt.

I'm starting to think that part of why Hurley doesn't go after the beanstalk rim running high jumpers if because they don't set the kind of picks needed. High centers of gravity don't translate to his system. Also part of why Reibe didn't work out - I don't think that kid liked contact. It got to the point where to avoid contact he'd just hug players - it got weird. He can go play squishy in Muss' system.
Indeed. Reibe's one on one post defense, especially towards the end of the season was not good. He'd be grabbing and hugging guys like crazy. How he didn't get called for even more fouls is a mystery. And when he did, I was like "what did you think was going to happen when you hugged that guy?"

He
Here are his game by game stats from last year. He didn't play well against the better teams and in those games he had a high foul rate. You can't teach size but they isn't a very strong story in these stats.

He was an 18 yr old freshman. I think that's the story.

That's what we said about Reibe.

I am less excited these days hearing about development projects when they leave for greener pastures after one year.
We didn't have a year of college level film with Reibe, who had a bad senior year. Just my hunch, but that kid doesn't turn out to be much. I think he'll already have a stigma attached to him by scouts leaving Hurley's system for Musselman. It kind of screams, I am not tough. Let him go shoot his jumpers in SoCal. Was a really, really poor decision.

This guy seems really promising now that I know he was 18 and only played half the season. Looks like a kid with a great motor, good hands and athleticism. I bet he turns out to be a steal.

I believe Oskar can play some PF also. He is Moble enough.
Defensively yes, but I doubt Hurley would put both him an Hines on the floor at the same time unless we get a 3rd capable center, not enough fouls to risk it.

I have read different things about his wingspan.
One site lists it at 7'2"+
Another lists it at slightly shorter than 6'8" which would be very, very short for a 6'10"" player.
Anyone know the real deal?
Wingspan is the new height. We need a picture of him standing next to a few other UCONN players. All with their arms stretched out wide. But maybe 1 or 2 of them look like they aren't reaching as far as possible. And maybe a few others standing a few steps in front of the main group or a few steps behind. Then we can argue and theorize about their true wingspan. Like we sometimes do about height.

Reibe quietly quit late in the season. I thought that was pretty clear watching him play. Hurley talking several times during the season about playing time and Eric needs to stop listening to outside voices along with him transferring only further shows he had one foot out the door and didn't want to be here.

He certainly can play though and we should not be expecting Giltay to have the kind of games Reibe had against top out of conference competition like Reibe had early last season.

I only like this signing if he’s exclusively playing the 4 with maybe a little bit of 3 mixed in

True love?

If this is to replace Koroma, great. If he is supposed to replace Reibe, not sure. We trade a McD AA sophomore we know for one we don't know. Not that we had a choice, Reibe didn't want to stick it out and fight for playing time. The only good thing I can say at this point is that Giltay is signing up for the competition so he wants to be here. I like the Hines add but you can't tell me he is better than Reed (at least the NCAA tournament Reed). So it seems like we have taken a step back at the 5 spot. Someone help me see how we are better at the 5 next year.

You could talk me into believing we will be better at 1-3 with Silas, Braylon and Jayden all taking a step forward and Colben coming in. But we are taking a step back at the 4 and 5, right? Hard to believe Khamenia will be as good as Karaban.

He can back up two front court positions. Definitely fills a need.

Not sure why people are whining about this.

Also, it will be really annoying spending the next few seasons as the fan base slowly learns how to pronounce his name.

Come back in a few years, I guess. Maybe things will be better then.

I heard somewhere there were rumbles of him already having discontent by January, someone local in that DC scene - I think it was actually one of the Sleeper's guy who is plugged into that DC HS hoops network. This is when he was getting plenty of time, so I think there was more to it than just time. I think it was more about the rigor, the ask (picks, rebounding, defense). The move he made says all I need to know about what he's made of. I honestly think his parents sent him to Hurley to see if he could toughen up. They got their answer.

Bad take - this kid has way more upside than Koroma and a very different need. Reibe was a paper tiger of a McD AA - terrible senior year, they needed a center. My take, Giltay will end up being the far more productive college center of the two. As for Hines/Reed, yeah, it's hard to replace a kid that was perhaps the 1-3 best center in CBB, but he'll also likely be healthy to start the year. It took Reed awhile to look right. Koroma was an older journeyman kid who was willing to take bench role for the experience.

Hurley said Reibe saved our season when Reed was out and he had good offensive games with decent rebounding, so let’s respect that. On defense they went right at him and scored thru and over him. He fouled like crazy too.
I know it’s just highlights but Giltay seemed to have good shot blocking instincts. We can speculate till the cows come home but…..we won’t be finding out until November at earliest about this kid.
