Oskar Giltay Commits to UConn

He rebounds, plays defense, and can block some
Shots. He is the anti-Reibe.

He doesn’t have to score a point to be a better option

I will neither confirm or deny that I've been checking constantly for this news. 😁

Welcome to the basketball capital of the world, Oskar Giltay.

Good thing he doesn't have a name that has potential to be butchered on the Boneyard. If you do, HooperScooper will find you. My plan is to call him OG from this point on.
Uncle Giltay

I don't like using the term "back-up." I haven't seen them play much but the OG and NH may both get lots of minutes. I'm sure the practices will be brutal. Work extremely hard and hopefully the substitutions are seemless and foul trouble for either won't affect the games

Bad take - this kid has way more upside than Koroma and a very different need. Reibe was a paper tiger of a McD AA - terrible senior year, they needed a center. My take, Giltay will end up being the far more productive college center of the two. As for Hines/Reed, yeah, it's hard to replace a kid that was perhaps the 1-3 best center in CBB, but he'll also likely be healthy to start the year. It took Reed awhile to look right. Koroma was an older journeyman kid who was willing to take bench role for the experience.
I'm talking myself into the fact that Reibe wasn't very effective end of year anyway so it won't be that hard for Giltay to exceed his production at the end of the season. But I tend to agree with the other guy who cautioned Giltay may not be as productive as Reibe was while Reed was out early in the year. Hope we're wrong. I admit I don't know anything about Giltay. Just basing my skepticism on the lack of interest from other major conferences. The only other school I heard connected to him was St. Louis. There was definitely interest in Hines and Reed before him. What's an example of a portal player no major conference team wanted who came to UConn and exceeded expectations? That would help me be more optimistic.

.-.
If this is to replace Koroma, great. If he is supposed to replace Reibe, not sure. We trade a McD AA sophomore we know for one we don't know. Not that we had a choice, Reibe didn't want to stick it out and fight for playing time. The only good thing I can say at this point is that Giltay is signing up for the competition so he wants to be here. I like the Hines add but you can't tell me he is better than Reed (at least the NCAA tournament Reed). So it seems like we have taken a step back at the 5 spot. Someone help me see how we are better at the 5 next year.

You could talk me into believing we will be better at 1-3 with Silas, Braylon and Jayden all taking a step forward and Colben coming in. But we are taking a step back at the 4 and 5, right? Hard to believe Khamenia will be as good as Karaban.
It's ashame that Dan Hurley doesn't know basketball as well as you do. Imagine how good our program would be if you were in charge.

I thought Cam Spencer exceeded expectations!

The fact that Hurley recruited him does not tell me whether he recruited him to replace Reibe's production or Koroma. I'm glad we got someone, just not sure of his role. Has Hurley said anything yet? What makes you so sure?

If any other team in the country asked this question, the answer would be
“Hurley wanted him.”

That should speak for itself.
No doubt other schools that didn't want him are second guessing themselves right now. We will see. I trust Hurley has a role for him, just not sure what that role will be yet.

You don’t honestly think this kid is replacing Koroma right? You have to be messing with us….

His role is Center, 16-20 mpg.

He played a solid role on a P5 team, showed elite defensive metrics, and is built like an NBA player. He's not coming here to ride pine.

I don't know. We do need someone to replace Koroma right? I actually like Koroma. He gave us some good minutes. It sounds like you think Koroma was basically nobody.

Koroma didnt play a single meaningful minute after November 19th.

I would love another Koroma, but this isn’t him. Expect the Koroma style replacement to come much later in the process, and to be a low major grad transfer.

OK, that's good to know, thanks. I just wonder why no one wanted him then. Maybe when they heard Hurley was after him they didn't bother to compete? I just keep hearing the big market is spares so it surprises me.

A great portal pick up. He and Hines will hopefully spend a couple of years is Storrs as the big man tandem. UConn now has a full 8 man rotation. Will some depth needs for spots 9 and 10 and beyond.

5 - Hines, Giltay
4 - Khemenia (?)
3 - Ross, Landrew, (Khemenia)
2 - Mullins, County (Landrew)
1 - Demary, County, (?)
Looks like County is going to get plenty of minutes, do we really see Landrew at the 2?

Here are his game by game stats from last year. He didn't play well against the better teams and in those games he had a high foul rate. You can't teach size but they isn't a very strong story in these stats.

He had some really great games during the year, including 8 points and 11 rebounds against Clemson in 23 minutes, but I don't have time to look at the stats in detail today. He seemed to struggle the last ten games of the year but the staff obviously believes his end of season is not truly representative of his ability and what he'll bring to UConn.

I'd give Hurley & staff credit for digging him out, more than I would apply his upside limit due to other programs not exploring. Most of these programs are chasing shiney. If you look at the tape, the kid is far more athletic than Reibe. He plays taller. Offensively, I think he'll be a rim runner.

In 2022 Hurley brought in experienced guards (Calcaterra, Alleyne, Diarra) when we already had Newton and Hawkins as established starters. But we didn't have a 4-star recruits like Landrew and County. Still, it seems we could use a guy like one of those 3 next year.

.-.
We didn't have a year of college level film with Reibe, who had a bad senior year. Just my hunch, but that kid doesn't turn out to be much. I think he'll already have a stigma attached to him by scouts leaving Hurley's system for Musselman. It kind of screams, I am not tough. Let him go shoot his jumpers in SoCal. Was a really, really poor decision.
A lot of people (myself included) ignored the red flag of Reibes underwhelming senior year of high school. I agree with you Ruff.
