Okay I’m off the Ollie train

I'm not on. I'm not off. The big test will come soon at MSG. If attacking the Cuse zone consists of 40 minutes of our guards cluelessly tossing the ball around the perimeter for 25 seconds only to either start a desperation dribble drive into the paint or to clang a 3-pointer off the rim, I'm going to have a hard time staying on.

I've said this the past few years. Ollie is not good at developing his players. There is no growth. There is no basic basketball knowledge other than dribble, cut, stop when you're too far under the basket and then chucking the ball out for a forced three. That is all I see game after game after game. I have not seen one "big" develop into a force down low. I know we're a guard heavy team - but they look panicked to me most days. Then when the camera cuts to the bench and I see Ollie's pained and confused expression (yet again) I find it hard not to switch the channel.
That face you are referring to can be summed up as "what is this? I swear we ran this play for AI back in Philly" nevermind the fact that the 6ers never actually won anything with that philosophy.

It is literally hilarious that you think are helping Ollie's case by harping on his inability to motivate his players.

They're not toddlers like you are - they should be intrinsically motivated to do at least the bare minimum, which they didn't.

You folks are deranged.

NOT CHILL

His pedigree with Nike and the potential problems that might be in his closet is a no go.

I want Ollie to succeed even if I think what he did to Miller was horrible and the fallout so pronounced....3 transfers and loss of MAL

But if he losses the team during the season with another performance like this...I will be on the bandwagon

The season is early..hopefully they will learn and improve and play to their highest level of ability

I know Ollie created the mess....but it does not look like this team has any NBA ready players

What Ollie did to Miller???

Are you kidding me?

Wow @BUConn10 I didn't know we were DK's first full-time D1 job. You might want to email UConn Athletics and tell them that their website has incorrect information.

.-.
Outside of Chill which seems to be slotted as a recruiting specialist based on his resume (which I believe every top tier program always needs), has anyone considered the fact that our staff is really actually made up of 3 Kevin Ollie's in a way? We have so much invested in the "keep coaching in the JC family" that we kind of seem to be glossing over the fact that three quarters of our staff are essentially first time coaches at the D1 collegiate level, and this isn't some low/mid-major starter gig, this is the big leagues. The progressive loss and replacement of guys like Hobbs and especially Miller seem to have had affect on the court preparation moreso than the off court duties like recruiting which was I believe the focus of the staff changes in the first place.

Our offense under Ollie post-2014 has always been anemic in a way, and even still at times under Shabazz was so as well but that crew had the perfect cast to make the system/vision become a reality (namely an all-time great collegiate guard in his final encore). But this year man... even in the games against the cupcakes where the score technically states we won the game were ugly to watch, moreso than in the past, and I think we as a fan base may have overlooked the value guys like Miller brought our team in that regard, I know I personally overlooked GM's contributions looking back on it now. Even our defense which has always been our core philosophy, what always gave UConn Men's Basketball their signature edge and always kept us in any game despite the advertised disparities in offensive star power as of late has been MIA.
Man I was so hard on Miller. Called for his head for about a year or so due to the lack of development of bigs. Wasn't until after his firing that I became aware he was the man behind the gameplans for our 2014 run. Also had no clue he was offering up alternatives to Ollie and this putrid "offense" to which Ollie scoffed at and chose to run his own.

All players in all sports at every level need some sort external motivation for top performance. Good coaches find a way.

It's not a 100-0% split in terms of who is responsible for motivating. Players need to give something on their own regardless of their coach.

Maybe we'll see a complete revamp of the offense in the next two weeks. And pigs flying. And world peace while we're at it.

.-.
But Ern, (pick one or more if you like)
A . Calhoun personally chose him as his successor.
B. He won a championship
C. He was a coach on the floor in the NBA
D. He bleeds UConn Blue
E. Calhoun personally chose him as his successor.

Are we recruiting overrated kids that other coaches see as overrated? Just a thought. I mean, we look very very very thin out there and can't shoot at all (Other than TL). Cobb could help.

No.

And yet we recruit better than every team in the conference every year. It's coaching, not recruiting.

Not to mention we just lost by 35 to a team without an 5 stars on its roster (we have 2).

JC is still an "advisor" through next march.

Has he just stood back because it's KO's program now?
Has KO not taken advantage of JC being an advisor?
Did JC try to help but was rebuffed/ignored by Ollie?

Maybe the extent of his advisory capacity is shaking hands and smiling for pics with big donors, but that said, JC hand-picked this guy and the program he built and its legacy are at stake here.

How often do we ever see a coach that's on the hot seat (in any sport) turn things around and completely cement themselves? Not often at all. When it's time, it's time.
Coughlin.

Their relationship has soured. They don't dislike each other or anything but the relationship is nothing like it used to be and Ollie has let Calhoun know it's his program.

I believe I've heard that it was Miller behind the 2014 runs (Shabazz said it I think). Where'd you hear that he was offering up alternative offenses? Wish Ollie had taken Miller's advice were that true.

I'm not sure that follows. I never wanted him to be hired, but once he was, I wanted him to succeed. I still want him to succeed. I hope the team wins out and I am forced to proclaim him a genius from a mountaintop. Being off the train means that I no longer think he will succeed. I don't think he's the best choice as our coach of the future. But I'm certainly not happy about that, or hoping for the team to lose any games.

I don't think they will have any game as bad as yesterday the rest of the year. They will be much better. I just don't think he's the guy to run the program. Something is clearly wrong.

I don't believe you are, but there are some I have no doubt. I am as frustrated with KO as any after yesterday and if he can't prove to be able to get some positive momentum I will be on the boat or train or all of the above. The Bandwagon too. Yesterday was appalling period as a UConn fan and the response verbally after fairly unacceptable. If he doesn't get it then he needs to go. The one thing I knew or at least thought I knew, was he could motivate this team and at least have them competing for 40 minutes now I have my doubts. Tom to prove me and so many others wrong and my confidence in that is nil.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the response. Both in game and post game, it's so "ho hum, what can you do?" Contrast that with what Edsall is doing and saying. Changing the two deep every week, demoting the guys who aren't busting it out there. Calling one of the solutions "recruitment" to light a fire under them. Constantly looking forward and taking ownership of what fails. It's leadership. Kevin Ollie doesn't display any. That is what concerns me most.

Based on his offseason comments, I thought or hoped he (a) had dealt with his personal issues and demons and (b) was ready to be 100% committed as the coach of this team. Did not get that feeling these last two games. He seemed to be about as concerned about the Arkansas game as I was when losing drunken midnight intramural games at UConn, and less concerned than I was when coaching 6th grade girls.

Didn't Ollie kind of say he got rid of the "bad apples" a few months ago and now he had all his guys....So, now that he is with "his guys", the guys he wants for HIS system, we should be expecting more. Time to turn it around is growing short...

Mau, hope springs eternal and I will hope it turns around. But I won't argue his case anymore and I stopped expecting him to succeed.
While I am off the Ollie train, I am not on the opposition train.

Hope you're not tied up on the tracks, KO might be though soon by a few unnamed posters.
