This is because the format changed. They used to geographically divide the country into regions and choose/establish the best teams from each region. So there was always a northeast representative guaranteed in the CWS each year.

When they changed to the modern format the regionals now have no tie to actual regions like they used to. You can now have every team in the CWS from the southeast if it works out that way. This never used to be possible in the old format and it is now much harder for northeast teams to qualify.
Why should baseball be different than basketball? The best teams should be playing for the chance at a national championship.

I think my post may have been unclear. I’m all for the best teams getting in, just commenting on the history of why some northeast teams has more CWS appearances many years ago

Best baseball teams should be playing for national championship. Unfortunately, baseball is not played at neutral sites, so the rankings are very important and not always impartial. Regional hosts have a higher probability of advancing in the tournament.

I get your point but finish in top 16 and UConn will host a regional.
