Football is covered under the Notre Dame/ACC ancillary contract signed in conjunction with the GOR. And yes, the Irish did not grant football media rights...only signed an agreement that, if they joined a conference for football prior to 2037...it would be the ACC.

We've heard this from many ACC people but has there ever been any acknowledgment from Notre Dame that this is real?

I believe on our end it means we would have to withdraw our sports if we join another conference. It really matters on the language of the contract.

Maybe there is a quote out there from someone at Notre Dame that says this is real but, I do not remember ever seeing it.

OK...just don't believe the bunch of reporting on it...I don't think that you will find A Notre Dame official confirming the contract to play an average of five games a year with the ACC...must not be so..they do it to be grand.

Not a tweet and the website sources a premium article from a Twin City newspaper (don’t even know if this is a good paper or not), but it says the Big12 recently approached the University of Minnesota about leaving the Big10 to join their merry band. Minnesota obviously declined, but that’s still very interesting. Is the Big12 just throwing out invites to see who bites? That’s desperation mode.

Yep...Swarbrick always maintains that independence is #1 for the Irish...but also stated in 2012 that if they ever join a conference it will be the ACC...about the same time that the ACC-Notre Dame contract/GOR was finalized.

2012 a polar shift Mayan apocalypse was suppose to occur. Many things that were supposed to happen did not or will not come to pass.

That contract is merely a speed bump if ND wants to leave the ACC. That would involve negotiations on what that promise was worth and what are the damages if breached.

Unlike the GOR, it does not encumber TV rights. This would just be plain vanilla $$$ calculation, like the exit fee.

And yes, there is such a contract. It is not available to the public since both ND and the ACC are private entities. No FOIA.

Let’s say the value of the ESPN contract is 40 million per school. We know from the special section Notre Dame in the ACC bylaws that the value of football is 80% of that contract. Notre Dame football is independent and not a part of the ACC contract. so the value of Notre Dame‘s grant of rights to the ACC for everything but football would be equal to $8 million a year. The ACC grant of rights runs through 2036. So Notre Dame is theoretically on the hook for $112 million over 14 years. If you consider the time value of money and discount that back to a single payment, depending upon the assumption to use, it’s probably 70 million give or take.

Now keep in mind that’s just the grant of rights. They also have to pay whatever exit fee is applicable. Say it’s $50 million, then the cost for Notre Dame to leave the ACC would be about $120 million. Now, the ACC could play hardball but more or less that’s the number.

Now, if you had the opportunity to make $100 million per year, every year on a go forward basis, would you be willing to pay 120 million for that privilege? If Notre Dame decides it wants to leave the ACC, the cost of exiting isn’t going to stop it.
