I respectfully disagree. There are Mormons everywhere and my observation is that they all follow BYU sports pretty darn close. One of the best visitor crowds at the Rent was BYU..they were everywhere that day. Many as large families. Just two weeks ago at a 5 guys in Stamford I ran into three Morman couples dinning together all sporting BYU gear. I was tempted to ask what was up with the gear, but refrained. I think BYU fans, like UConn fans are ready to up their interest further if only they were in a respectable conference. BYU brings a national audience.

That they have the network could be a hurdle. But you're right, their national brand in football is a big feather in their cap.
 
BYU's choice is simple: keep their BYUtv and stay Independent or roll it into a B12 Network and join the B12. They will not be able to keep BYUtv and join the Big XII. Not on Boren's watch.

BYUtv isn't just sports programming, though it might be tough to support a BYU network with only whatever the hell else is on it.

Yes. There have been multiple reports that it would be a problem (no I won't go Google links). As @businesslawyer said, it is more than a sports network. They need/want to keep it going. It likely is much less viable without BYU sports to anchor it. Remember, it isn't even just the U.S. for them. Their missions are global, and they want that network on satellite etc.

No matter what - I will always keep Rule #1 in mind. Although I wanna hear more press like this.
 
The more it evolves, the more I think our biggest obstacle is going to be the B12 coming around and trying to make it work with BYU. Their football brand is far superior to ours.

The more you see the B12 beat guys talk about this the more you realize that a network is actually a real possibility now than it was even a few weeks ago. As long as a network is on the table UConn will be a good candidate because of metrics.

Their network has a religious mission, not profit. its a overall money loser.
 
Kind of like Auburn-Alabama, Ole Miss-Mississippi State....if folks watch the games...a network wmay take two in a state.

Heck..here at my North Carolina cabin, My Direct TV has the SECN and the BTN...My Tallahassee home has the same.

How do you expect a non-profit to function if it can't even pay it's bills? Just because something is designated as a non-profit doesn't mean the employees work for free and there aren't basic operational costs associated with running the organization.

The major benefits of a non-profit status are tax-related. Major deductions and benefits. That doesn't preclude them from having costs associated with their operation and running a television network incurs major costs.

Everything BYU does is about its religious mission. But it shows BYU football and basketball games and presumably if they joined and a B12 network was started, they'd have to amend or give up those rights. I don't have ratings numbers, but you'd have to assume those games are among their highest-rated programs.

The more this is shaking out, it really looks like Cincinnati is #11 and #12 is a vote between BYU and us, if they decide to expand.
