That's a wee bit of over simplification but good enough to understand why schools with little football cachet suddenly have mad value.

I think 14 is out of the question, and even if it wasn't, there is no way they get to 14 without BYU.

Totally agree. If expanding to 12, you go for cable boxes , hence UCONN & Cinci. If expanding to 14, you add cachet. None of the candidates has more of that than the Cougars of Provo. Number 14 would be the curious add. My choice would be UCF: It's Orlando, it's Disney, it's all about media & hospitality destination. USF can't match that with anything except beaches.

Acknowledging strengths of the Orlando metro area and media market, some may reasonably argue Tampa-St Pete's larger media market and roughly 30% larger population are relevant considerations for a hypothetical # 14.

Both of them might get you to 10% of what the SEC and ACC have. And that 10% is 90% UCF. USF is just a non-entity. About the same pull as Eastern Connecticut State has.

I've known some UCF grads, they root for U Florida. People down there pick a school to root for in grade school, and it isn't ever UCF or USF. So just as there are lots of UConn fans at Central, there are lots of Gator and Nole fans at USF and UCF.

Yep, and so buying into UCF and USF is a 20 year play. Going to take time to develop deep fan bases. These schools are on the radar for all the other reasons - cable boxes, 3rd largest state, recruiting grounds, preferred road site for travel, high growth state.

It's already been ten since USF joined the Big East. Nothing has changed. And it was a 20-year plan back then too with them.

USF was never in a real conference. Florida will continue to grow, it will always have warm weather, an ideal travel destination and a sea of recruits. If I were assembling a revamped B12, FL would be in the list. Which ever of USF and UCF can present the best vision for a real university would get my ticket. The revamped B12 would have Cincy, UConn, BYU (find a way to make it work people - they have real fans!) and either USF or UCF <--which ever wins a beauty contest.

In the future, if the ACC shows weakness, expand to 16 by adding whatever breaks loose. Anything south of DC from the ACC would add nicely to the new B12.
 
UCF just by being second largest school in the country has more potential IMO. If they ever get really good they'll have an enormous fan base.

So according to the Dood - Texas is so desperate to stay in a conference with WVU that they are willing to give up the $300MM they are guaranteed from the LHN and now become good partners & share their windfall with everyone else??

While the LHN is a complete fail for ESPN it still pays UT $15MM/year for the next 17 or 18 years. IMO, I don't see any way UT is going to split that up with the other members of the conference under the guise of a B12N when they don't have to.

Bevo cares about 1 thing only. UT officials know that they will have their choice of landing spots if/when the time comes. Some of those options may include keeping the LHN (i.e. an ACC deal similar to ND), others may require them to give up the LHN. The point being, there is no reason for them to make that decision now. In a perfect world, things would stay exactly the way they are for UT. They have a 10 team league that they basically control, they have their annual Red River Rivalry with OK, they have a huge money advantage over the other conference members & for all of those predicting the demise of Charlie Strong, he reeled in a top 10 class yesterday.

Boren & Gee can squawk all they want about expansion and about a B12N but until someone from UT says they are willing to share I don't see any changes coming for the B12
 
I would think they would set a floor for their willingness to consider this and the other teams getting a sliding scale of any remaining profits with teams like UConn, Cincy getting a lower %.

The B12 would certainly be making a statement by adding 4 and not just 2.

I never said they didn't have options. Boren knows they have a home if it all blows up. There have even been recent rumors that OK has had conversations with the B1G. OK doesn't have the position of strength that UT does but they will be alright.

My point was why would UT want to be a good partner to the other 9 schools in the conference when they don't have to? Everyone else is clamoring for change whether it be adding new schools or starting a B12N.

UT is VERY HAPPY with the status quo

Texas needs to provide content to LHN, therefore it needs to have opponents and stage games, and it needs to make sure the rights to those games is not assigned to anyone else, e.g. a conference. With its current B12 affiliation it satisfies those requirements but other affiliations might not. ESPN surely has language protecting it from changes in related contracts, and depending on the specific language, those terms may be triggered by a B12 dissolution.

If dissolution of the B12 could lead to termination or renegotiation of its LHN deal, Texas might be motivated to satisfy Oklahoma.

But, I think it could work out a deal to keep LHN with an independent-ACC affiliation, so I doubt Texas is that worried.
