I doubt the SEC takes Oklahoma State unless ESPN locks up Texas in the transition. If ESPN grabs the top two brands in the Big12 it's probably worth it. They still have an opportunity to pick up the remaining B12 schools at a discount (like the AAC).

I don't think UVA leaves unless ESPN wants them to, and they wouldn't undermine/devalue their own content unless it made sense as part of a broader deal, i.e., it's rolled into a successful Big Ten bid.

Businesspeople know not to bid against themselves. In sports broadcasting, you bid against ESPN. If ESPN is not bidding, you get contracts like the AAC's. The B1G would get a great deal more of course, but to match the SEC's income, they need to keep ESPN as an aggressive bidder.

I don't buy that ESPN isn't going to bid on the B1G if they take UVA. They already took Maryland. What's the difference there?

Maryland was unexpected and executed as a fait accompli; discussions for the B1G contract had not yet begun. It was quickly followed by steps like the GoR to prevent a recurrence. You can no longer do that without de facto consent from the TV networks.

If I were the Big Ten I'd want to get crackin on my deal. If third quarter spits out a million cord cutters or some absurd number like that - it's going to be that much harder on them.

They need to generate another ~$120 million minimum annually for the other schools to break even.

Rounding for ease. Schools get 40 and ESPN get half of the network money which is about 20.

$12 a year per OK cable subscriber (if they can get the increase) and the additional tier 1 and tier 2 money is going to be over a billion dollars over a decade because that is about what they need to generate to keep everyone whole.

Hard to see anyone making the math work to add both of them.

Maybe we should open your own thread for you entitled something like "actual facts as opposed to WAGs." That would be better than raining on our parade every time someone throws out something that makes no sense but has the ability to cheer me up for a minute or two before I process why it makes no sense.

We could get the mods to put a "you need to wait __ minutes before posting" filter, but have it be active only for @whaler11 and only on the CR board. Just allow us a few scant moments of false hope before brutal reality sets in.

Well it was posted for 7.5 hours....

I don't think Oklahoma and Ok State to the SEC would do any good for UConn anyway.

The last thing UConn needs is Texas in the ACC.

UConn fans shouldn't be rooting for the Big 12 to lose teams. They need to root for the ACC to lose teams.

I also wouldn't root against the ACC getting a network. It's not happening, but UConn is a better/more likely add to a league with a network than a league without a network.

I don't see why the SEC would want both. They've been pretty firm about not expanding into a state they're already in, if they get Oklahoma why would they want a 2nd team in the 28th biggest state? The other states with two are "grandfathered" in and that's not going to happen with additions. The 16th would come from Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania or Kansas.

Teams with networks need content. Content is this year's cable boxes, which were the previous years football prowess, which was the previous years Championship game.

If the SEC wants to expand OU is likely near the top of their list. At least they wouldn't be kicked out of bed for eating crackers. If the price of OU is OSU, an up and coming (aka financially well supported) program, the SEC might go along.

The collapse of the B12, is terrible for UCONN unless you think combing the top of the AAC with the leftovers of the B12 is the best possible outcome. Even then UCONN is no lock for that group.

Our best hope is the B1G, while keeping the ACC as an option. We know the ACC will only invite us if they are forced to do so by either their network partners or to backfill a spot. No way they go to 16 on their own.

If the ACC option dries up, it likely because someone filled our spot, again. If you ask me our fate lies with the B1G, either as a member or as the replacement for an ACC team invited to the B1G.

All the other more creative options are unlikely. We have one last spin on the wheel of realignment.

It doesn't have to work that way (offer, turned down), and I never said it did. If you have two candidates rated equally (Louisville and UConn), one candidate is dragging their feet (I need to do due diligence, give me more details, give me time to think it over) and the other is eager (I'll commit today), you may go with the eager candidate -- especially if you fear a snowballing loss of confidence among members leading to a Florida State/Clemson exit with any public sign of weakness.

And any B1G overture would lead UConn to explore its options and take time for a detailed comparison of financials.
PJ = HFD?

Here is some inside scoop: The Wake Forest car wash guy doesn't have any inside information.

Neither does GS, The Dood, MH or any of our Gopher friends.

There are probably 1,000 rumors that have been posted on this board and not a single one has come to fruition.

If you don't think the ACC can add UConn tomorrow it really isn't worth discussing. The evidence that UConn is a candidate for the Big Ten is.... that there is no evidence UConn is a candidate for the Big Ten. It's something people on a message board have talked each other into.

One would think the UConn turned down the ACC nonsense would have died with HFD, but I guess he lives on in spirit.

This is the type of post that makes the BY great.
It can be taken as a offense to Whaler or a criticism of the naivety of us CR denizens. When you can offend both sides with a single post you've arrived.

I wasn't offended ;)

Notre Dame has lost independent luster, should join conference soon @OmegaSupreme914 @Expansion_Crush http://mweb.cbssports.com/ncaaf/writer/dennis-dodd/25274712/notre-dame-not-in-control-of-own-future-should-join-conference-soon…

@posas13 @OmegaSupreme914 conference schedules are filling up. Their independence is dependent on schools willingness to play them OCC

@posas13 @OmegaSupreme914 Why would Michigan or Michigan State continue to play them when they're out - recruiting them.

Omega Supreme‏@OmegaSupreme914 3h3 hours ago
@Expansion_Crush @posas13 i don't want to play Notre Dame anymore. I have been over that.

@OmegaSupreme914 @Expansion_Crush @posas13 If ND joins ACC I can see a warming of relationship between ND & B1G..but a ND that is INDY?..

Notre Dame is flirting with conferences again. Don't buy it Delaney or Bowlsby. They've cast their lot with ACC

MH3 ‏@MH3 · 33m33 minutes ago
And now Cincy is having talks with ACC too. Could be another Louisville scenario for the B12

MH3 ‏@MH3 · 32m32 minutes ago
Don't take the bait Bowlsby. B12 already got burned by the Irish once and it cost big. FSU and Clemson big

MH3 ‏@MH3 · 32m32 minutes ago
ACC has talked to Uconn as well I'm told. Something is brewing in Swoffordland.

mdmost ‏@mdmost · 29m29 minutes ago
@mh3 Notre Dame has to join the ACC if they are pushed into a conference. That was the deal they made with the ACC.

MH3‏@MH3 @mdmost yup. But they are saying there are ways around it and I don't believe them.

I don't know what is more troubling, the fact that persons such as MH3 spew total fiction on a daily basis or the fact that I come here to read it?

He actually had gone quiet for a long time . It's recent that he rejoined bs brigade.

At least you come here, a respectable place, to read it. It's like passing by the moonshine stand in order to get your cheap gin at a mid-priced saloon. Shows you have some pride.

All I'm saying is the last time ND flirted with joining a conf it was a smokescreen for ACC to make them a partial and take UL

MH3 ‏@MH3 · 3h3 hours ago
Leaving the B12 looking ridiculous after leaving Rutgers and UL out there to be nabbed by rival conferences

MH3 ‏@MH3 · 3h3 hours ago
While ND laughed all the way to the bank with their Indy status and an ACC GOR that kept FSU and Clemson in place.

Murr ‏@MurrDCU · 3h3 hours ago
@MH3 flirting w/ B12 got ND the partial membership w/ ACC

MH3 ‏@MH3 · 3h3 hours ago
@MurrDCU never had any true intentions of joining B12. Smokescreen

Murr ‏@MurrDCU · 3h3 hours ago
@MH3 Nope, but ND maximized their bargaining chip

MH3 ‏@MH3 · 3h3 hours ago
@MurrDCU true. It gave them leverage to get a bigEast deal from ACC

MH3 ‏@MH3 · 3h3 hours ago
B12 needs to bite the bullet and at least invite Cincy before ACC does.

MH3 ‏@MH3 · 3h3 hours ago
ACC will still have Uconn to get to 16 when ND joins in all sports-and it's coming.

#SEC, #B1G, #Pac12, #ACC all on alert for the breakup of #Big12. And it'll all begin when #Sooners make their move!!

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire · 4h4 hours ago
It's not the right time for a possible B12 implosion.
Texas would need to bolt...where?
ACC? Possible..but not now

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire · 4h4 hours ago
2 things wrong with this scenario for now ...1) DeReg will not pass until Jan 2016
2) New B10 TV contract not done

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire · 4h4 hours ago
First...Deregulation needs to pass in Jan 2016.
Then I believe ACC will aggressively talk with ESPN and try to cobble UT with Partners...

Murr ‏@MurrDCU · 4h4 hours ago
@flugempire Conferences with 16+ members will need conference semi finals leading into CCG.

Greg Flugaur
‏@flugempire
@MurrDCU Yes..that potential avenue does not open up until Dereg passes. This could be a variable on why Swofford & ESPN is slow rolling ACCN

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire · 4h4 hours ago
...but Keep in mind FOX would need to get something out of a B12 implosion scenario...which would probably include additional B1G expansion

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire · 4h4 hours ago
But the longshot B12 implosion scenario, leading with UT going to ACC, can't happen now.
IMO

SEC Commish Sankey's comments do seem to eliminate any possibilities of an SEC invite going toward Ok St & WVU anytime in the future

Good article but not sure I agree with the author's conclusion. I don't think the SEC needs the school to be AAU, just that it wants schools with high academic profiles in contiguous states with good athletic tradition, that criteria may add some additional teams such as Oklahoma and Cincinnati, possibly Iowa State and Kansas State as well.

Agreed that OU would certainly qualify. Cinci would not, and Iowa State would not. Neither have the tradition for one, and neither are remotely "southern" in culture. Kansas would prefer the B1G to the SEC. OU would likely prefer the SEC.

For all those who said "why would the SEC want OK State?", as content, it's a good catch. Solid football and basketball. They are really, traditionally the Big 12's second best basketball program. The SEC isn't seeking big TV markets. It's not out of the question that they would add OSU to get OU.

You would hope, right? Here's what he wrote:

"I’ve written all along that academics play a larger role in these decisions than fans or media recognize. Sankey mentioned academics first in his comments. How much more clearly can he make the importance of that factor?"

Really? Apparently the ACC doesn't subscribe to that theory.

Southern in culture wasn't anything the commish mentioned. Missouri certainly isn't southern in culture. Tradition is one of those nebulous things that's hard to define. Most people can agree there's certain schools that just scream tradition, but past those it's a crapshoot. I was using the criteria "has won a national championship in the two major sports" as criteria. Oklahoma has tons of final #1 rankings, and both Oklahoma State and Cincy have multiple men's hoops national titles. Though I excluded OSU because of the one team per state thinking. Kansas State/Iowa State don't have a single championship in either, which is why I had them lower on the list.

"Continguous". "AAU". The SEC sounds like it is taking a direct page out of the B1G playbook. If that's the case, college sports are probably headed into 4 megaconferences. B1G, PAC, SEC, and the "Best of the Rest". I hope UConn can find its way into the B1G and likely could if things keep moving in the AAU-direction. The Best of the Rest conference would consist of ACC/B12/AAC/MWC leftovers. Best 16-20 gets in.
