"Continguous". "AAU". The SEC sounds like it is taking a direct page out of the B1G playbook. If that's the case, college sports are probably headed into 4 megaconferences. B1G, PAC, SEC, and the "Best of the Rest". I hope UConn can find its way into the B1G and likely could if things keep moving in the AAU-direction. The Best of the Rest conference would consist of ACC/B12/AAC/MWC leftovers. Best 16-20 gets in.

The contiguous thing for the SEC is meaningless if you've ever looked at a map....try to expand that conference without doing it in a contiguous manner. It simply can't be done, so I'd advise not to draw any conclusions about 'megaconferences' there.

And forget the AAU as it pertains to the SEC.

If the SEC expands, it really has to go in one of two directions.

1) Head north. North Carolina-Virginia. Upside, tons of people. Downside, these schools might have options.

If UNC, Virginia and Duke are going to move, they're likely more comfortable in a Big Ten that would then stretch from North Carolina to the New York metro area than they would be associating with the Mississippis of the world. That would leave the SEC with the lesser lights North Carolina State and Virginia Tech. That's not a bad deal if it meant getting carriage rates in two markets with 18,000,000 people.

2) Go inland. Oklahoma-Kansas. Upside, easy pickings. Downside, smaller markets and the State questions.

In a vacuum, if the SEC offers Kansas and Oklahoma, they're gone. In reality, what to do about Kansas State and Oklahoma State? Answer - probably nothing. If you're a politician in Oklahoma or Kansas, you likely face more backlash for blocking OU and KU than you do leaving the States to the wolves.

Whichever way they go, SEC expansion will set off Armageddon.

CRA tender box - three possible sources of ignition for the next round

- B12 tension over expansion and LHN <--seemingly infinite scenarios could come from the chaos.
- Notre Dame - ends independence - enters ACC as full member <--our best chance for a ticket - maybe UConn vs Cincy for a seat with the ACC
- B1G tv contract provides footing for their next move

No matter what - it's my opinion that conf dominance in NY will be set by whichever conf takes UConn, Neither the ACC or B1G have critical mass at this time.

I could well be wrong but I don't see the SEC expanding without adding a presence in Virginia and North Carolina. I'm not sure that it would be UVA & UNC, in fact it wouldn't surprise me (considering the profiles of the schools and the cultures of their alumni and fan bases) if the targets would be Va Tech & NC State.

The TV money disparity is so great, that I don't think UVA and UNC would stand by and watch Tech and State leave the ACC for the SEC over them. Unless of course those two other schools were headed for the money machine that is the Big Ten. So many moving parts, makes me believe we will not see these major shakeups people talk about.

If ESPN can pull off Texas and Notre Dame to the ACC, the ACC may finally get a network.

It's a long shot, but since it would be a tremendous kick in the nuts to UConn, I give it better than likely odds.

In the sense that shooting a horse with a broken leg "helps" it....yes.

They Shoot Horses, Don't They?

Fishy's urbane and well read background is flickering into his subconscious.

The novel was, at heart, a cynic's bible. About defeatism in life's long dance.

Kind of like UConn being stuck in AAC purgatory & sacrificing its media rights for the greater good?

I guess there might be an allegory there...

In "They Shoot Horses Don't They?" the protagonists are a couple who are desperate to win a marathon dance contest.

After 879 grueling hours (get your mind around that time), the promoters call off the contest with 20 couples still on the floor.

The dispirited couple walks outside for the first time in five weeks and sits on a nearby pier. The woman pulls a gun from her purse hands it to her partner, who shoots her.

When asked by the cops why he shot her, he states "She asked me to. They shoot horses don't they?"

The full Nelson scenario...

He is calling them "basketball schools" in a not so subtle way.....haven't had 9 win football seasons in last 15 years but have made final fours.

Pointing out that there must be some kind of correlation....since they are the only P5 teams without 9 win seasons yet have been overly successful on the hardwood.

And yet IU is one of the rocks of the B1G, Kentucky is a rock in the SEC, and if you are to believe the CR rumor mill, everyone would fall all over themselves to pry UNC out of the ACC. Taking it a step further, Duke is a rock of the ACC and the same conference made it a point to go get Syracuse early on in the CR process.

Basketball schools, like UConn, absolutely have a place inside the P5 structure. Yes, they need to be able to field a competitive football team every now and then...which these schools all do (including UConn). But as long as they deliver strong hoops to their conferences more often than not, which obviously UConn does, a mediocre/average football program can be, and currently is, tolerated.

I agree we do have a place in the P5. I think the difference here though is that IU, UK, UNC and Duke were all P5 members before football became the main sport. Unfortunately times have changed and now as we've been told over and over football drives the bus. As for Syracuse, well, can't explain that one.

Nope...Rather it was Shalala's "bride price" for bringing Miami to the ACC. The promise was made. It would have been Cuse at the start if not for the Virginia, VT politics.

Football is driving the wedge not the bus between the haves and haves not. This model as is will self destruct. Its unsustainable.

Speculation: BTM will confirm that B1G needs more east coast content ASAP to sell some of it to Fox, FS1.

First Rule impact: SUNY Buffalo and Temple are in.

My expansion update is done. It’s even been edited. Will be posted Friday.

Christopher Lambert ‏@theDudeofWV · 1h1 hour ago
I added Boise State & UH to the matrix.

Christopher Lambert ‏@theDudeofWV · 1h1 hour ago
Based on the data (& only the data) the top 2 are BYU & Boise.

‏@theDudeofWV @dodgerjazzcougs BSU not under consideration due to location.

@dodgerjazzcougs As crazy as it sounds FSU may be looking in 2017.

Christopher Lambert ‏@theDudeofWV · 1h1 hour ago
@dodgerjazzcougs FSU has $ problems. Worried about ACC SoS going forward.

Christopher Lambert ‏@theDudeofWV · 1h1 hour ago
@dodgerjazzcougs @ToddatWyler If BYU gets in - and they should - it’s because of their program & TV ratings not Utah recruiting.

Christopher Lambert ‏@theDudeofWV · 1h1 hour ago
My take is this. The B12 should add 4 but phase their conf revenues in over 10 years.

Christopher Lambert ‏@theDudeofWV · 1h1 hour ago
add BYU, UCF, Cincy & let ECU/UCONN fight it out over last spot.

Christopher Lambert ‏@theDudeofWV · 55m55 minutes ago
But folks, & this is important, Big 12 has not decided to expand or decided on who to invite.

Christopher Lambert ‏@theDudeofWV · 55m55 minutes ago
Depending on the day of the week the B12 has between 4-6 votes for the idea of expanding.

Christopher Lambert ‏@theDudeofWV · 54m54 minutes ago
And the Big 12 is not close to deciding. 2016 at the earliest. Most likely 2017.

Christopher Lambert ‏@theDudeofWV · 52m52 minutes ago
Despite everything I’m told otherwise the safe bet us the B12 waits until 2017 & ESPNs decision on ACCN before making any moves.

Just been told something by BTM. I need to ask a few questions..bad bad day for this..but. Info has to do with FOX. I will be back

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire
I've been told (BTM) many MANY in Big Ten leadership positions believe FOX will AT LEAST successfully win bid on 50% of Tier1 B1G TV Package

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire
My questions on why?....why is there this belief...and question of what ripple effect if any should we anticipate

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire
@AB670 Personally I have no idea. I was beginning to think ESPN was going to keep status quo and keep all (with ABC) B1G Tier 1...IDK

Reading this entry makes it seem that the Dude is bipolar. He's up, he's down, he's all over the landscape. He's covering all bases so that, no matter what does or doesn't happen, he can say that he predicted the outcome.
