I'm not sure that BYU is much more helpful -- or at all more helpful -- to a XII network than Cincy. Does BYU have a bigger following than Cincy? Probably. But BYU's fans are geographically diverse, and probably much more interested in BYU than BYU's conference, in a way not true for UConn and Cincy fan. Plus Cincy, added on to UConn and WVU, helps build a presence in the Northeast, where regions between those schools (PA, NJ, Western NY) may follow the XII a bit. BYU gets you none of that.

I'd be interested in seeing the metrics, and maybe I'm wrong, but a mostly Mormon audience interested in the Mormon school doesn't necessarily do as much for a national TV network as a mainstream school trying to draw in -- with help -- the Northeast.

BYU has a national network already. I can't imagine they'd hurt the Big XII's attempts to get their own.

Again, I am not downplaying the size of BYU's fanbase. But it is not a broadly distributed sports network they are on -- it is a targeted audience focused religious channel that includes sports. I don't see that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts the way it is when you combined the Big XII with UConn. Or, probably, Cincy

It may make far more sense for BYU to continue to own its own rights and sell them to its own targeted audience.

I respectfully disagree. There are Mormons everywhere and my observation is that they all follow BYU sports pretty darn close. One of the best visitor crowds at the Rent was BYU..they were everywhere that day. Many as large families. Just two weeks ago at a 5 guys in Stamford I ran into three Morman couples dinning together all sporting BYU gear. I was tempted to ask what was up with the gear, but refrained. I think BYU fans, like UConn fans are ready to up their interest further if only they were in a respectable conference. BYU brings a national audience.

That they have the network could be a hurdle. But you're right, their national brand in football is a big feather in their cap.

But their reluctance to part with that network is not a positive.

Has there been anything from BYU to indicate that they wouldn't be willing to move their sports programming to a Big XII network?

BYU's choice is simple: keep their BYUtv and stay Independent or roll it into a B12 Network and join the B12. They will not be able to keep BYUtv and join the Big XII. Not on Boren's watch.

BYUtv isn't just sports programming, though it might be tough to support a BYU network with only whatever the hell else is on it.

Yes. There have been multiple reports that it would be a problem (no I won't go Google links). As @businesslawyer said, it is more than a sports network. They need/want to keep it going. It likely is much less viable without BYU sports to anchor it. Remember, it isn't even just the U.S. for them. Their missions are global, and they want that network on satellite etc.

If BYU is in play, a UConn-BYU tandem is a home run for the Big12. Contrary to what you hear, Cincy will be out.

First time poster here...
With conference realignment, Rutgers is like the Trust-fund kid ( that nobody likes) who never did anything notable but inherited a path of financial stability.

Sounds like you might fit right in. No one ever died for dear old Rutgers.

Don't know how many of you caught this. Barry Trammel says the 3 prime candidates are UConn, Cincy, BYU with Houston a non starter.

No matter what - I will always keep Rule #1 in mind. Although I wanna hear more press like this.

The more it evolves, the more I think our biggest obstacle is going to be the B12 coming around and trying to make it work with BYU. Their football brand is far superior to ours.

That is why we gotta hope to hell our advantage in developing a conference network nudges us toward #11.

The more you see the B12 beat guys talk about this the more you realize that a network is actually a real possibility now than it was even a few weeks ago. As long as a network is on the table UConn will be a good candidate because of metrics.

Their network has a religious mission, not profit. its a overall money loser.

Kind of like Auburn-Alabama, Ole Miss-Mississippi State....if folks watch the games...a network wmay take two in a state.

Heck..here at my North Carolina cabin, My Direct TV has the SECN and the BTN...My Tallahassee home has the same.
