Interesting. I think most people assume that they will get in as basketball royalty, but your point is a good one.

Honestly, I think you are more valuable to the Big10 than Kansas. A combo of OU and UConn is about as good as it gets with schools the Big10 could realistically aquire.

I agree but I'm also extremely biased. KU is AAU though and that's a tough hurdle to overcome right now. If UConn could ever gain AAU membership, it brings far more TVs to the BTN and conference than KU. Top 5 in NYC and Boston, not to mention all of CT. The only thing in KU's favor is their AAU membership.

This 100%. Furthermore, by admitting OU sans AAU status, makes UConn and all it has done the past few years to enhance its profile an extremely easy sell. Adding Rutgers and allowing UConn to go elsewhere makes little sense to the overall goal of eastern domination that Delaney has made clear from day 1.

I think the difference is that outside of Mizzou no one cares about Mizzou while Kansas is a national brand in basketball. The idea would be that they are bigger than their local market while Mizzou is not. Just a thought.

I see their AAU membership much like I saw Nebraska's, grandfathered in.

I agree completely. Kansas would be a nice add for Men's basketball but that's it. If some things I've read are true they are either low man in the AAU or very close. Yes still AAU but the margin between Kansas and UConn in that regard is not what it is between UConn or Kansas and say Mich. On the sports side Kansas plays 7 men's varsity sports, Seven. That would be the lowest in the B1G. Then there's the massive neon spotted elephant in the room...taking Rutgers and then letting UConn walk would IMO be on par with buying half a mansion. Sure you can say you live in a mansion but every time you invite friends over some old dude with a Wake Forest shirt is walking around in his boxers scratchin himself...not cool. Worse is that we would have given up the half with the pool that overlooks the golf course.
 
Don't forget women's hockey. The Big Ten doesn't have their own women's hockey conference so far. There's 4 women's programs right now that could make up Big Ten women's hockey. North Dakota or another school would be the 5th, if 6 minimum are required.

The BTN certainly can use women's hockey...

Women's hockey unfortunately hasn't proven to be a content generator. NESN barely televises the Hockey East women's tournament championship, so I doubt BTN is going to look into that too much.

I know USNWR isn't the be all end all of university rankings, but Kansas is 115, Oklahoma 109, UConn 57. These are from the 2016 rankings, btw.

Would the B1G take Oklahoma without Kansas in light of the B1G's preference for contiguous states? While I do not think it is an absolute and I don't think it would be an issue for UConn as only 30 miles separates CT and NJ; but, its 440 miles between Norman OK and Lincoln NE plus there is the AAU issue.

If there is one overarching lesson : it's not just a matter of us positioning ourselves as better than Cinci, better than BYU, better than whoever the last man out is. The job doesn't stop once we find a home. We have to keep pushing, keep building, keep promoting, keep striving for the best in all areas - so that whether it's 10, 20, 50 years or whatever - there should never be a question about UConn's seat at the major athletics table.

Love all the positive chatter but I won't sleep any better until I see the official UConn to P5 announcement. I couldn't find it but didn't ESPN run 'UConn to ACC' as a headline prior to Louisville getting the nod?

I think the biggest issue for continuous states is being left on an island. WVU is on that island and it's not a good situation. They have no rivals, no similar culture, no history with any Big12 schools. Oklahoma would have UNL. UNL and, to a lesser extent, Iowa would give them that familiarity.

Problem with KU is they're a one-trick pony. It's basketball and absolutely nothing else. Heck, our football program is better than theirs. They're located near a meh media market in KC, where Mizzou is located between two. While KU does have a national brand in basketball, it's not enormous on the level of a Kentucky or Duke where they bring in millions of viewers just for showing up on the screen. I just can't see the B1G passing over Mizzou on multiple occasions and instead saying YEAH! KU!

I'd be interested in seeing those numbers. I always thought Kansas brought in huge viewership. They sure travel as well (or have a national following that shows up at games) in similar numbers.
 
I think Kansas as a 'national brand' is seriously overcooked.

The Big East half of Big Monday always outdrew the Big 12 half, even when Kansas was involved.

The best Big Monday rating was a UConn game....still hasn't been touched.
 
The sports media were all lamenting how Kansas was going to be left out in the cold back when it looked like Texas and OU were going to the Pac10. It was assumed the conference was done (with TT and OKSt tagging along out west) and everyone was moaning about what a shame it would be for an elite basketball school to be shut out. So of course it instead happens to us and the sports media have been pretty fine with it.

They do, I'm only saying they're not quite in the elite fan travel/TV group that basically consists of KY and Duke. They're a notch below. Problem is, it's basketball and that doesn't matter much. That, and Mizzou has a respectable BB program coupled with a solid FB program, where KU's huge BB program is coupled with a dumpster fire FB program that would certainly water down the B1G in football.
