Nika Injured

The ironic thing about Besiktas, Nika's team, playing in this game, they shouldnt have.
This game normally is the winners of the Euroleague and Euro Cup, from last season.
Besiktas lost the Euro Cup to the London Lions. However, the Lions ownership, late last season said they would not field a WBB team to play on the International level. So Besiktas, the runner up took their place. The Lions still have a team that plays in the British WBL, a weak league IMO, and no international players to speak of.

Another ACL. <moan>

I was so expecting her to use her Euro season to develop her game. Big setback.

For what it’s worth, Nika was having a very nice game when she went down in the 3rd qtr with 11 pts, 3 rbs & 9 assists. The play she was injured on came off a steal with Nika set to head down court with the ball.

After feeling really bad about this news for several hours, I have concluded that Nika will be back, better than ever because she is undoubtedly one of the toughest, most determined athletes I’ve ever seen.

The injury is incredibly unfortunate and a big issue. Nika needed the development.

This is what I was thinking about when I heard the news:

Consider for a moment the professional basketball journey of Christyn Williams.

One must wonder about the impact of a full college season, followed immediately by a WNBA season (granted not a lot of game time but certainly intense practices and fitness work) followed on immediately by pro basketball. Such a shame some/most(?) players cannot afford to take time off and properly recover.

This has been a serious concern for WBB players for a number of years. The year round grind of the W + overseas basketball, added to those players coming into the W directly after completing a tough college season has resulted in far too many injuries to talented players.

Beşiktaş just updated it's an ACL and Meniscus tear. To be honest, from her reaction I thought she got the ACL special (ACL+MCL+Meniscus).
Sucks big time.
What a horrible thing now that she finally gets to play. Interesting how we get medical news faster from Europe than here in the US

Ugh. This means at some point she will need a total knee replacement. My sister tore her ACL & Meniscus during a volleyball match. She had the surgery & the doctor told her that 25 years from now you'll need a total replacement. She had it done 6 weeks ago and is doing just fine.

Professional WBB vs. amateur college students with much higher privacy concerns - big difference.

Really? It takes forever to get injury updates on WNBA players too.

I remember Nika spraining her ankle in the first tournament game in 2021
She was sitting on a bench with an ice bag on her leg, tears streaming down her face.
Although the ankle must have hurt, you could see they were tears of frustration.
I thought”Wow!, this girl REALLY wants to play”
Nika has never said or done anything since to change my mind about that.
That girl will work day and night to come back. She just never figured out how to quit.
GO NIKA GO!!

It's kind of ironic that throughout her college career she and Aaliyah were the only meaningful contributors that did not have a major injury, but when she gets to the pros, it happens. I suppose that every athlete has to endure at least one major injury in their career.
