NFL Offseason - Teams other than the Northeast Three

On one hand, Mclaurin has been saddled with awful QBs and awful coaches up until last year. On the other hand, he shows flashes at times and disappears a lot. Feels like someone who gets the bag of money and the investment never pays off.

Outside of my Giants, one team I'll be rooting for is Baltimore to win the Super Bowl.

Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry are two of my favorite players and both guys are at that point of their career where I'd really like them to get the validation both deserve as champions.

He got overpaid, but only a 3 year deal. I think Washington was desperate because they have a short window while Daniels is on his rookie deal. I don't think any other team was paying him that much.

I don't think this ended up being a bad deal for either of them. He got paid what he's worth, short contract and he's got Daniels instead of demanding a trade and ending up with someone like Cleveland.

CINCI set the market by signing a WR2 at $29M. PITT reenforced it with DK (Virtually identical stats to #17). It is what it is. $128M/4 yrs, incl. signing bonus. Team out after 2. $96M (incl. SB) guaranteed. Who says no?

I posted the above on Twitter back in July. The market was set for Wide Receiver the same way the Shoen stupidly gave $40M AAV to a subpar-mediocre (at best) QB.

Without knowing the $$GTD, it looks like the broad strokes of what #17 agreed to are nearly identical to what I suggested. They basically met in the middle, though I think I was much more generous with the $$GTD. The agent not disclosing $$GTD and the team not "gloating" leads me to believe the deal is more team friendly than DK's.

Three years is perfect. The deal runs its course when Daniels is expected to cash in.

McLaurin asking for a trade may actually have been to Washington's advantage. Another team would have had to give up draft capital AND pay McLaurin what he wanted. I don't know if it was seriously entertained, but I have a lot of doubt it was ever going to happen if it was.

McLaurin is under contract for 2025. The savvy, dollars & cents, business move for Washington would have for him to play out his current deal and franchise him for the next two seasons at below $30M, but that does not account for a man's psyche and whatever effort he would put in while being pi55ed off. On the other hand, now that he has his money, will he go all out? I hope think so. If Terry has demonstrated anything, it's that he is no Albert Haynesworth.

I don't feel like many of these preseason "trade demands" carry much weight. A guy like Brian Robinson had no leverage and got traded, sure. But it feels like most times they either sit out and ruin their market value (LeVeon Bell) or cave in to a fair deal at the end of camp.

My issue there is, it seems like the holdouts always result in some sort of soft tissue issues because they're just not in football shape. Hamstrings, calves, etc.

I'll be very curious what Dallas does with Micah Parsons in the next couple weeks. Sure, he's great but I don't think that team is much different in the standings with or without him at year's end.

Dallas is not a playoff team on paper and I don't think they are on the field either. I foresee them fighting the Giants for third. So as good as Parsons is, his contribution will be akin to A-Rod winning the MVP on the last place Rangers.

I think the Giants are more talented as a team, albeit young and need time to season.

Agreed. They really should trade him, but I don't think they'd get anything close to what they probably want for him. Same reason as what you said about Terry. It's just really bad NFL economics to surrender draft capital and then pay a guy like a top of market FA. You're paying twice. Maybe if you're a team with zero Super Bowls and you think he puts you over the top you pull the trigger. Can't think of a team like that except maybe Buffalo. Lions would qualify but that's not really a need for them.

I like to see players betting on themselves, but this is...Wow!!!

Big win for the team.

That was a tough game last night for Washington. I'm not so disappointed with the loss, but what happened on the way to the loss.

First of all, No excuses. There was no hinge call that went the other way or single play that turned the game. Green Bay WON in dominant fashion. Their defense will be tough for any of their opponents and barring injury Josh Jacobs will be a beast all season.

On the other hand...

The four major injuries are all huge blows and are going to hurt (No pun intended) for the rest of the season. Wise (Big bodied run stopper) and Ekeler (receiving back) especially so. Bates too. He may have been the best blocking TE in the league. Noah Brown is living off the tipped Hail Mary ball vs. Chicago. He'll need to fall down the depth chart. I think Washington has a couple options on their practice squad but may go looking for a surehanded vet as well.

Washington should have had a kicking competition and not just have anointed Matt Gay. He will probably need to clear out his locker this week.

Finally, the jury is still out on Josh Conerly. One might expect more out of a 1st round tackle, but a veteran would look foolish vs. Brian Burns and Micah Parsons over a five day period.

Oh well. On to the mini-bye and Week 3...But first UConn Football on Saturday. Need to get that rancid Orange taste out of my mouth.

More like what I expected. If he wanted that super high AAV he wasn’t going to get the guaranteed money over a longer period. He’s just not really that tier of player.

Jags Bengals game was entertaining. I watch a lot of the Jags since they are my typical regional coverage. Joe Burrow his big so Browning relieved him and scored ghee winning TD going over/pushed over the goal line to win by four.

The Jags failed on fourth and five in red zone with four minutes left by going for it. Similar to UConn’s decision against Delaware.

Matt Gay missed another chippy, but then hit from 46 and 56. He probably bought himself another week at Atlanta, but I think the Commanders should bring in some legs. The Giants are probably on the lookout for a new kicker too.

Way to go NFL. And now he's hurt.

The only thing good about the Commanders game is that the Patriots won.

That was a good weekend. UConn, Washington, and New England all won, where only one them was supposed to. Jayden Daniels is back and fully healthy heading into Monday Night, Hosting Chicago, with McLaurin probably on his way back to playing as well. I couldn't care less about Noah Brown (who caught the Hail Mary last season). I think Lane and McCaffrey will make him an afterthought by the end of the season. Bill is making fans forget about Brian Robinson Jr. as well.

Washington is favored by 4.5 (up from opening at 4.0) and is -230 (Up from -210) on the Moneyline. Of course this means nothing. I saw that only about 10% (if that) of the pundits had Washington pulling a win out of LA outright last week. Plus Chicago is coming off a bye.

The Bears chose to protect Caleb Williams and give him weapons (not the least of which is Ben Johnson), to the detriment of the other facets of the team. They give up 6.1 yds/rsh. which is bad news versus the NFL's #1 running team. They are better against the pass, but have allowed 10 passing touchdowns, which even considering their bye, ranks #31.

Really a pretty wild start to the season.
  • Ravens are 1-4. They are toast. Even with Lamar back the defense is horrid. 177 Points Against
  • Bengals are trying to stay afloat with Flacco, probably in part because the Ravens suck
  • Chiefs are 2-3 and only really have a shot because the Chargers keep losing games they should win.
  • Colts are 4-1 behind Daniel Jones. Anybody questioning him over Richardson now? The key though has been elite defense. 89 points against. That plus Taylor wins games
  • Jags are 4-1, defense is good, offense is not, so this seems like a bit of a mirage.
  • NFC South sucks. Bucs are 4-1 but have net point differential of 3.
  • The Cardinals at 2-3 are +7. Every NFC west team is pretty good, but the Niners are +8 and 4-1 so seems like a mirage, like the Buc and Jags.
  • Lions might be the only truly good team in the NFC.

Last night's games were putrid, but mainly because the Commanders lost. No one wants to take the reigns of the league.

The Chargers (+2 point differential, got smoked by both Washington and NYG) and Steelers (12 point differential, with Aaron Rodgers at QB and 3/4 wins vs. the Jets, pre-gelled Patriots, and Browns.). The Colts are leading their divisions with smoke and mirrors. The best thing at the moment that can be said about the Colts is they've won they games they are supposed to (4/5 wins vs. Raiders, Cards, Dolphins and Titans.).

The Patriots have looked really good the last three weeks and they should add two more to their win streak, but it's also the softer part of their schedule.

The NFC is a little more stable. The Bucs are beating who they should but not by much. They played very well vs the 49ers, but their other 4 wins are by a combined 9 points. The Eagles have stumbled twice in a week to the Giants and Broncos, who put up 18 unanswered in the 4th quarter alone. The Packers, who looked like the team to beat in the NFC, have a tie to the Cowboys and a loss to the Browns. Washington is inconsistent at best so far. They are the oldest team in the league by a wide margin, are battling injuries, and they don't seem to have the same magic as last season.

I enjoy watching Baker and the Bucs. They’re without their top three receivers and still beat the 49’ers. Baker!s run for a first down which was soon followed by TD pass to Tez was special.

This week wasn't quite as crazy as last week, aside from the Giants' win. I am not sure when we will see the better teams start to separate themselves. There are a handful of bad teams, and then a bunch of teams that are pretty competitive with each other.

Historically, some of those teams will start to click and go on to double digit wins. Chiefs look like they might do that now. Indy defense should hold. Jacksonville? Maybe. Bucs are probably good. Packers too. Pats should win because the schedule is so weak. Chargers are 4-2 despite terrible offense so far. I think they could separate if they can score some points. Shouldn't be surprised when we see pretty decent but not great teams like Atlanta or the Panthers winning at home.

I have been impressed by the Jags. They’re frisky on defense and have some weapons on offense. It’s obviously going to be up to Lawrence to become who they thought he would be.
