But this is the existential threat, right? What is anyone playing for outside those 12 CFP spots? There are over 130 teams.
Every solution seems to produce more stratification.
I think the structure of college sports right now won't permit UConn to become one of those competitors for the 12 CFP spots. If there is a limit of ~$20 million on payouts to athletes across all sports, and UConn will always prioritize men's and women's basketball, then we'll always have the lowest football budget in the pool of sports-dedicated universities that spend the full $20 million. That may be ~40 schools. So no matter what conference we get in, there will be at least 39 schools with better football funding than us. I think we have to look to compete successfully with our competitor pool who is spending below $10 million on football. Those schools are not going to the CFP and we can compete with them.
Yes, there will be stratification, but we can be in a higher tier than we are now (i.e. the ~40th best football program) vs where we've been recently (~80-100). More like a mid-tier ACC or Big 12 program. That's success in my view.
