New PAC-12 Forming

You think that SDSU, Fresno, Boise, and CSU engineered a split of the MWC that will cost them $15MM a piece, plus another $43MM of Pac 2 money that goes to the MWC, rather than just go back to the existing MWC schools and demand an unequal revenue split, which UNLV and Air Force were able to do?

Wouldn't it have been better to just get the Pac 12 schools to buy into the MWC, which they showed they were willing to do, and split the buy-in unequally, which the MWC schools showed they were willing to do?

No, let's go with your plan.
Why should they have to buy into a conference that should be greatful to have them?

"If you want to know how absurd this all has gotten … UTEP, which has averaged 3.2 victories over the last nine seasons and is currently 0-4, might now be fielding multiple offers to leave Conference USA."

"This isn’t how the Pac-12 envisioned it, but it got a bit greedy and then got boxed out by the Mountain West, which is using the exit fees paid by the departing four teams to sweeten the pot and keep UNLV and the others. Sources say the Rebels will get $25 million, among other concessions, to stay."

"Having the Pac-12 get stronger at the expense of what would have been a gutted AAC and Mountain West does not serve anyone’s purpose other than bean counters and television executives. And even then, it’s minimal. Instead, it is better to have six relatively healthy non-power conferences (add the Sun Belt, Conference USA and Mid-American to the list) than further separation. That’s especially true with the new, expanded playoff system offering an automatic bid to the best of the rest."

I don't understand this response. We say the same thing ourselves.

They are going to be writing a much bigger check to the MWC to get 5 schools. Do you understand math?

I don't understand why you are posting this tweet as a reply to my post. I think CR has ruined the sport.

If this OSU flunkie is trying to defend his OSU program's actions, I'd say the difference is the PAC was a dead conference walking. The B1G, The Big XII, and the ACC all fed off the PAC 12 carcass because those PAC 12 programs wanted to leave and they will make boatloads more money. OSU and WSU poached the MWC to simply make another version of the MWC with perhaps a slight bump in pay.

Nope. The PAC 12 is just playing the hand it was dealt.

When the ACC opened this pandora's box morality and doing things "for the greater good" flew out the window. Anyone being critical of this PAC 12 situation is hypocritical.

Is UConn truly truly being considered for PAC ? or was that old and hypothetical from Wednesday I believe? What about an Eastern pod of teams in PAC? Some BIG East basketball only schools would actually make a rather deep conference. Maybe Gonzaga comes?

Is it even worth checking periodically or would we have a better chance BIG 12 after March Madness? Football looks much better with the NIL growth we did past year Next year should be even better I hope..

If we get the FB only offer we should take it

Quotes from the article:

The current Mountain West TV contract pays each school $5 million annually. That deal expires in 20 months, and a diminished Mountain West could garner significantly less. The MAC only distributes $800,000 as part of an agreement that runs through 2026-27.

Austin Karp, the managing editor of Sports Business Journal, projects that a new Mountain West TV contract would net “slightly more” than what the MAC is currently getting.

“Who’s going to be left in the Mountain West?” Karp said. “Because the Pac-12 has that lawsuit against the Mountain West, and if they succeed, that might allow some of those schools out of having to pay something. So maybe UNLV and Air Force change their mind. Maybe the Mountain West just folds. I wouldn’t be confident putting my cards with the Mountain West right now.”

UT’s travel costs would rise significantly in the Mountain West
, though time spent getting to and from Toledo would not. Bus trips to NIU and Buffalo are equivalent to West Coast flights. Athens, Oxford, and Mount Pleasant, Mich., by bus are no shorter than Las Vegas, Colorado Springs, and Laramie, Wyo., by plane.

The MAC is the only FBS conference untouched by realignment. The last full-time member to leave the conference was Marshall in 2005. Massachusetts is joining next year.

The conference is filled with like-minded universities located in a small geographic footprint with similar resources.

Toledo joined the MAC in 1950 and has been one of the conference’s flagship programs, winning a total of 80 conference championships. Only Ohio (1946), Miami (1947), and Western Michigan (1947) have been in the league longer.

Nope. I am very critical and not hypocritical.

One thing many (who are now blasting the remaining two Pac schools for attempting to survive) seem to forget is that a bit more than a dozen years ago the Pac had and expansion in place (adding Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma & Oklahoma St) that would have protected the conference indefinitely. ESPN stepped in and underwrote the Longhorn Network to keep UT in the B-12 (which led to OU backing out, killing the entire move).

A byproduct of that was a B-12 without UT and OU was in negotiations with the BE on a merger, which would have benefited both conferences.

My prediction/s at this point:

Mtn West adds Hawai'i for all sports along with Texas state to complete the 8. Unless they want Utep. +(niu/tol fb only maybe)

Pac 12 adds New Mexico State to make 8 for all sports & Gonzaga hoops. (Maybe uconn for fb only? or Louisiana or UTEP all sports?)

Then they maybe both go after hoops programs like Grand canyon, st marys, san fran etc

5 mil$ is steep for fcs. I like Sam Houston State from c-usa but they only have 14k in their fb stadium currently, too.

I think almost none of these happen lol

I loved this blurb in the article you quoted above. It sums up what makes the MAC so great that I hope it's never touched.

What other conference has it's members be able to still travel by bus to away games in conference?!?

To me, the MAC is like the college version of small-town Friday Night Lights. There's something old school about it.

For our sake, I wish the Pac 12's plans of adding South Florida, Memphis and Tulane actually happened. I don't love being the only east coast team in an entirely west coast conference, however if we get the invite we should accept as long as the cost to leave is reasonable if the Big 12, ACC invite ever happens.

I think you have your New Mexico’s mixed up. State is in Los Cruces , U. is in Albuquerque and is the more popular school.

I think this is one of the issues that's making the PAC-12 hesitating. They know we are not a long term solution. However, we are a brand name despite the fact we weren't good at football for a while. On the UConn part, I think it would be foolish to sign any long term GOR.

If the PAC-12 add Gonzaga as rumored, our chance of being added will increase significantly. If we can work out the terms with them, it is a win-win for UConn and the PAC-12.

I think it's up to UConn. They need bodies. I'd love it to happen. It's the perfect interim situation for us. And not a bad long term solution if it comes to it.

I agree. If we don't get into the B12 or the ACC, we are ok with the Big East and football only on the Pac-12. We will make $12m to $20m per year depending on the Pac-12 football media deal. It is not ideal, but it is better than staying independent.

Absolutely.

The Pac12 football contract for UConn would have to beat the current $500K contract we have. I think they can easily do that...

Nobody wants to send their Olympic sports to Hawaii every week. It's a 7.5 hour direct flight from Denver! Think about what it's like if you can't get a direct flight, eg, Reno, Albuquerque,

It was one the of reasons the old WAC schools split off to form the MW.

They should have just added unlv & air force when they had the chance to make it 9 then gonzaga bb and uconn fb only.

Who is pac 12 gonna add then for 8 all sports? they have no good options really.
