VIDEO of Saniya Chong

I don't see evidence of big hops here (not a big deal) but I do see:

- someone who is extremely comfortable handling the ball with her left hand (she's a righty) on the perimeter, in space, and on drives; not just on short layups from the left side of the basket
- someone who has a very pure jump shot and can really shoot the 3, even from deep (22 ft +)
- someone who's scrappy and has a nose for the basket (she is putting up some huge point totals so no surprise there!)

Not sure what the level of competition has been, but sounds like their coach is going to be upgrading the schedule. Moriah appears more explosive/athletic and more aggressive with the ball, while Saniya looks like she kills you with a more traditional set of moves and outstanding range. I look forward to seeing more vids of this girl to get further impressions of her game.

[edit: On listening more to the rest of the video, the opponent in the video--Archbishop Molloy--is a top 10 team in the NYC area, so that is a big deal]

Great video! what i liked was during the interview she kept talking about the "team" and it was a "team" effort. She sounds like a great girl!

Wonder if she would be ranked when the ESPN 100 comes out later this year?

May be just a guess, but she somehow reminds me of Hines Ward of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Including a nice smile.;)

It appears that since Saniya hasnt played in a NIKE event shes not ranked higher. I think that will change this season. I had a couple of NYC coaches tell me shes the second best player in the State of NY behind Breanna. I was also told she wants to be a Husky. She scored 55 pts againest Molly and Molly aint no slouch.

I couldn't resist doing some googling about this player and I found out all these invaluable tidbits.
  • She is a guard and stands 5'9", which makes her 2" taller than Bria.
  • Announcers pronounce her name sah-NYE-ah, which rhymes with Maya. She's another "A" girl, like Tina and Breanna and Diana Asja and Nykesha and Svetlana and Kaleena and Bria and, um, Kiah.
  • Her HS team is (as of time of my research) 15-0 and has scored 1,328 points, which is a lot. Ranked #85 nationally and #5 in NY state.
  • She averages 34.2 ppg, 9.0 A, 1.7 B, 4.9 R and 5.0 S. She is not a dazzling FT shooter, which suggests to me that she will fit right in.
Choice between Chong and Samuelson? If all things are equal, Geno will go for the one who most wants to come to UConn. And maybe if they are not equal, same rule applies.

but where both recruited by uconn in the beginning of the HS career will Bria smith was
UConn was very interested in Prince but stopped recruiting her after her incident with the law in Brooklyn. I think there was less interest in Bria Smith. In any case since neither got an offer, you can't count them as NY kids UConn "lost".

And there's Barbara and Ketia and Maria and, well, Kennitra ... and doesn't Swin's given have also fit the formula?

You are correct. "Swin" was short for Swintayla, so add her and Rebecca and Kara, but Shea needs to grow another syllable to qualify.

Lordy, forgetting Rebecca and Kara!!!

My mind is shriveling, obviously. But, I have remembered some others now that I've been exposed. Obvious misses like Tamika, Carla, Rita, Jessica and -- gosh -- Brianna and Mikala (it's late; is that spelled right?) and the gorgeous Tahirah! More forgivable ones, too, like Tihana and Kiana, or kids from before my fan era, like Laura, and doubtless plenty more not making it through the blockages in my memory.

On top of these, do Kia and Elena qualify? Special category?

Uconn already had signed Hartley. So Smith didn't get an offer. If Hartley went elsewhere, I'd bet Smith would have gotten an offer.

I wouldn't count Holdsclaw as a loss either. Geno has done very well at CTK subsequently, but at the time, it was kind of a no brainer to pick Tennessee. If she'd been just a year or two younger, maybe UConn would have had a chance.

Geno won an NC with a bunch of New England girls primarily (Lobo, Jen, Kara, Kesh) and Jamelle. It was after doing so that UConn really spread its wings on the recruiting front. But that was too late for Chamique.

Looking at Nan's recruiting site for the next two years, it seems strange that we aren't looking at any true centers, no?

You can do whatever you like but it defies logic.
umm we are talking about the Boneyard here. When has logic ever been involved?
