Shrug. Pitt, a co-plaintiff, got in without so much as a whimper. Defillipis said that "(BCU) wanted to be the New England team." It was always about territory.
Yes Pitt was the co-plaintiff but it was not the Pennsylvania AG grandstanding for cameras. Business can overlook a lot and if Connecticut had stayed in the background like Pitt, they might have gotten in. He who shall not be named made it personal and took the lead. It was about territory but by making it personal, the ACC could not point to the proximity of the schools making for a great rivalry (what are the two N Carolina schools close by)

Well we could what if this to death. but the bottom line is the BCU AD came out and said that they blackballed us and specifically told us why. Personally I think Blummy is a king sized ass hat, but trying to lay the blame for our CR woes at his feet is revisionism.

If we didn't sue the ACC we would have been in P5 long ago. A lot of self inflicted wounds. I think this decisions is the lesser of two bad decisions.

I don't see why we continue to argue this, but Pitt also sued the ACC, and not only that, the Pitt President went on the warpath and personally insulted specific ACC presidents.

And yet, a few years later, UConn was the top choice to join along with Syracuse, until BC blackballed us.

At the end of the day, BC succeeded in making sure they were the only representative of the P5 in New England. Bob Ryan had a column back in 2002 in which he discussed conversations with high placed sources at BC which stated they were highly concerned that UConn was going to overtake them and that BC needed to remain king of the hill in NE. The last almost 20 years have been nothing but the result of the concerns Ryan highlighted in that column.

For the rest of the ACC, they could accept Pittsburgh as well as UConn. It just didn't matter enough to them. It only mattered to BC.

Background? Pitt reamed some ACC presidents in public.

This Blumenthal trope is just silly

Sure. He’s a blowhard media hogging mouthpiece. And said unfortunate things.

But this allows you to escape the real life answer: We weren’t good enough. We weren’t traditional enough. We were nouveau. And OUR Taxpayers would never allow YUM Center Graft. There’s no Robert Moses coming to build it.

My regret? I wish Dick had laid into Father Leahy - seemy - for the blatant hypocrisy.

Link?

You want me linking to stuff from 2003?

The funny thing is, there were posts ON THE BONEYARD made by high ranking officials. The former boneyard. Narratives of how a specific ACC President was vilified as a liar in front of fellow presidents at an academic event. There is likely no link to the former Boneyard.

You mean like the people at Pitt and Syracuse did? Upbraid him in public in front of others at a conference?

That maybe would have worked to get us in.

Miami sued Connecticut for defamation...it got personal.

And Miami had new friends in the ACC as well as their in state compadre FSU. Florida's Governor ordered the state's AG to get involved. Charlie Christ, governor at the time, felt it was a something that the state of Florida had an interest in.

Blumenthal ended up being the locus for all of the ill feelings...it did not take a BC black ball...

The suit was filed in part because Miami grew tired of "just a continuous sea of defamatory comments," Isicoff said. Specifically named as making some of those comments was Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who, according to the suit, stated that Miami damaged Connecticut through an "illegal conspiracy," plus "secretly negotiate(ed) with the ACC" and made "false promises" to Big East members.

All of those comments were false, according to Miami's lawsuit, which further claims the comments were made on UConn's behalf and defamed Miami in a way that "injured ... its good name and reputation among the public."

How do you explain Pitt and Syracuse then, that said even worse things?

The BC blackball stuff is in print, in black and white. The AD even had to apologize to the ACC and ESPN for saying what he did.

You're wrong on this.

Bottom line is I'm elated. Also received numerous texts from friends around the country excited about the move. These are people planning to go to the tourney and they don't root for a team in the Big East. I feel bad for the football crowd but you weren't at the games last year. Just hoping for a good final season in the American for hoops.

Neither were basketball fans. When has UCONN ever been known as having a great basketball fanbase? Even when UCONN was winning?

is this all it does to get you Southerners to hold a grudge - against some of your Core interests?

I got a guy from Queens that lived on the 68th floor (really the 58th - but he lies) and he has lots of theories. In fact, since I am in Northeast real estate, he is not that out there in the pool of builders.

What? If you want to bash the basketball fans when the team isn't winning, that's fair, but do you not remember the ticket prices at MSG a few years ago for the Sweet 16/Elite 8? We literally set the record for ticket prices.

Can you believe those numbers? Tickets are selling for almost $100 more than a regional that included Kentucky, UNC and Ohio State, and they're going for almost $100 more than a double-header that included Louisville and the final Big East meeting between Syracuse and Georgetown. You could buy four tickets to the Kentucky vs. Louisville Sweet 16 game this weekend for the price of one UConn ticket. THAT'S INSANE!

Let's be fair ...

As many of you are pointing at the Football fans and Football attendance as the evil stepsister: my insight is that HOOP at Gampel in the corporate seats (for a preponderance of games) & HOOP at XL were woefully uninspiring.

If you have to put a finger on why your gut says WE need to do this: FANBASES need to get back to our rabid past behavior. Buy tickets; make your Team viewing that you look forward to. If you whine about Football ... how about a little commitment in the Fall to a game or 2. Soon. We won't have 40 point losses.

Read this about Swarbrick and Nordenburg: The Disgusting Stench Of College Athletics

Do you remember the time Nordenburg said this at a press conference?
"This is a case that involves broken commitments, secret dealings, breaches of fiduciary responsibility, the misappropriations of conference opportunities and predatory attempts to eliminate competition," he said at the time.

This all happened because BC assumed control of the BE reorganization after VT and Miami left.

He's saying that Leahy engaged in secret dealings, misappropriated conference resources (otherwise known as stealing), making predatory attempts to eliminate competition, and breaking their word.

This was an open assault on BC and the ACC.

And like I said, a top Syracuse official posted on the former Boneyard that Leahy was publicly upbraided as a liar in front of academics for taking on the role of BE honcho while he was plotting with the ACC.

In 2011, Swarbrick then turned around and then accused Nordenburg of being a liar and a hypocrite.

Do you realize that no UConn president or AD made such comments about ACC people?

Pitt, Syracuse, BC, Notre Dame, all accused each other in public of being liars, hypocrites, robbers, cheaters.

Maybe they all deserve each other?

The almighty powerful BC.

So, they didn't blackball us?

Even when you see quotes from the principals saying, "We blackballed them." And, quotes from the North Carolina people saying, "We couldn't understand why BC was so adamant." And then the reporters saying those officials at the end of the day said switching UConn for Pittsburgh was not a big deal (in other words, it didn't matter much to them."

These are direct quotes.

Sure. There's this thing called the internet and once stuff goes on to it, it kind of sticks around. You should check it out.

Try 2003.

Stuff disappears much faster than you know.

For instance, locate the infamous Syracuse BOT quote about Leahy on the former Boneyard (which doesn't even exist anymore).

It's Way-Back-Machine or Bust.

Under coach Jim Boeheim, Syracuse was clearly one of the elite basketball teams in the country and would boost the ACC’s stature in that sport.

The second target was Connecticut, which was part of the Northeast footprint the ACC wanted, and was coming off the daily double of a BCS bid in football and a championship in men’s basketball (the third for Jim Calhoun). In addition, the women’s basketball program under Geno Auriemma had established itself as the most dominant in the sport over the past 15 years.

DeFilippo does not deny that BC opposed the inclusion of UConn.
“We didn’t want them in,’’ he said. “It was a matter of turf. We wanted to be the New England team.’’

Here's the link to the original article. I guess this needs to be re-posted periodically.

I didn't say they did. I said that the North Carolina people looked at BC in consternation and they were like, we have 4 schools within an hour of each other here, and you're worried about UConn? BC: Yes. OK, man, whatever, we'll go with Pitt, doesn't matter to us. Both are just Yankees anyway.

Were it not for BC, UConn gets into the ACC.
