While I am a charter, card-carrying member of the Hate Notre Dame Club, I have to admit to a lot of respect for Muffet as a coach, a recruiter, and a person. I didn't get the sense that she was trying to tweak anyone, but, if she was, her point is valid. For fans, for women's basketball, and, most especially, for the good of the programs themselves, the greatest possible effort should be made to annually schedule games against the best competition. We should play ND every year, Tennessee every year, Baylor every year, etc. Intersectional games have special appeal, and should be strongly encouraged. But, most importantly, teams cannot get a true sense of who they are unless they regularly schedule against top competition and not just rely upon the Tournament to make that happen. Ironically, if ND football had scheduled games against such top competition (which, as everyone knows, resides in the SEC) they and their fans would have approached their game vs Alabama more soberly. I'm much less concerned about our team's W-L record going into the Tournament than in how battle-hardened and tested and ready they are to face the stiffest competition, and, as a fan of the game, I'll have a much more interesting season to watch along the way.
