We've been waiting a long time to get healthy and we need to stay healthy. We still need our injured to get up to speed which I believe will happen before March. Having Azzi and Griff back brings us the experience we lacked last season and we went to the FF. Griff back is huge. Azzi getting back to the Azzi we knew is huge. With Griff back our rebounding and defense will be at another level. The combo of KK and Griff keying on opponents top scorers will make their life difficult. Azzi is the final piece of the puzzle in our Big 3. Now we need more scorers.

Our Big 3 put on a show against Seton Hall. We saw what they are capable of. Against top teams we need to get them their shots. The Big 3 will be keyed on making it difficult for them to get their shot. It will be difficult for defenses to stop all 3 in every possession. So I expect Geno will run plays to get them open. Lets face it our Big 3 are more than a handful.

In the past few seasons defenses were able to slow UConn's offense down. This time it won't only be one great shooter that defenses need to stop it will be 3 and that means no double teaming her or cheating on defense to stop her. We now have 3 elite scorers but I think we need more. This is why I believe we need 5 scorers. Having more scorers who can step up in big games without hesitation, and with poise and take their shot will take a lot of pressure off our Big 3 and in big games that will put more pressure on opponents to defend them too. I believe our defense will make it difficult for opponents to score.

Jana and Ice are gonna be key in big games. We've seen their development over the past couple of games. We are gonna need them to continue to improve and play with confidence and not be intimidated. CD has been working hard with them and its beginning to show. We saw in the 4th qtr of the Seton Hall game with our Big 3 on the bench our team looking to pass and execute and I would like to see them look to create their own shot much like Allie did knocking down shots in the tune of 9 pts. Allie is instant offense. We need others to look for their shot and score.

Coming up we have @ Tenn and @ SC. Two big games on the road. A win @ SC will put UConn back on top of WCBB.

I agree with most of what you say Tonyc, but a win against @SC will not put UConn back on top of WCBB even if they also beat TN. They only get back on top if UCLA, USC and ND go down as well.

I truly don't believe in Ice and Jana for this seson, I hope Morgan can get there and Allie get some reasonable playing time. Aubrey should get well deserved minutes.

UCLA didn't look that great on national TV yesterday. against Baylor.
Betts looked good but the rest of the team seemed off.

And in the Texas game Maryland looked terrible.
They won't be ranked in the top 10 much longer.

UConn's fate depends on its poise & consistency.
Making good decisions & reducing mistakes could take them far.

The formula is the same as it ever was, going back even to those summer days playing pickup games on the asphalt courts down at the park. If you can hit from distance they have to guard you close out there, and this allows you to blow past the defender for a drive. If you can’t hit from distance then you can’t create your own shot. You need help from a pass or a pic.

If all you can do is drive to the rim, the taller players can wait for you there and force you to make an awkward contested shot. But if you can pop up for a midrange jumper, then even the tall kids have to come away from the hoop to defend you and open layups become possible.

If you can do all of this and also pass off the dribble, then you become every defenders nightmare. The team becomes your offensive weapon. A top team has to have a few players who can do these things.

Currently UConn has 3 maybe 4 or 5 players who can do all these things — Paige Azzi Ash of course, but also Sarah (though she doesn’t need the pop up jumper to get an open layup and is probably the second best passer on the team), and Kaitlyn used to be able to do all these things and may remember them soon. KK and Morgan have the skills for most of these — KK lacks the consistent perimeter shot and her pop up jumper is rusty, Morgan has the perimeter shot but her pop up jumper and layup is still a bit shaky, but her passing is good. Aubrey doesn’t like to shoot 3s, though she can hit them, and her pop up jumper is not her best shot. She’s a straight slasher to the rim, as is Q. And Allie can hit the 3 (yikes, can she ever!) and she can drive to the rim and make contested layups, and she can pass off the dribble. But her midrange game seems less developed for this level.

This season, offense won’t be the problem. Geno has worked assiduously to get minutes for all our shooters and to develop the half court offense. Defense is going to be the question that will determine how far we go. It looks like the top 5+3 of the roster are clicking on defense. I have a feeling even the next 4 will have developed enough defensive intensity to get some minutes in an NC game. Now lets see if they can fight hard enough to get the team that far.

My dream isn’t just to win an NC. I also want to see Allie sink a few key 3 pointers in the effort, and Morgan get a couple of key steals and lead the fast break, and Q grapple for a few key rebounds and maybe hit a 3 or two in the final quarter. And I want to see Aubrey put on her cape and take over the game a couple of times. And Ash playing the toughest D ever and hitting 3s as needed. And KK and Kaitlyn being total menaces on defense and impossible to trap in a press. And of course Paige Azzi and Sarah playing as smooth as silk, passing and scoring like the other team isn’t even there.

OK. I got that out of my system. Now let’s just watch and see as Paige & Co fight their way to a title, out working, out hustling, out shooting every team they meet.

In my opinion, we have a 4th scorer in Ash and need to make some game adjustments to make her more productive on the offense. First I have noticed that while great on defense, she exerts a lot of energy and the switch back to offense often leaves her out of position on the wing. Most of the games where she has scored a lot were where the team was not pressing. All that plus helping her with her confidence and practicing those short jumpers and drive to the basket will prove a great return on investment come tournament time.

Good point but it depends on the rankings you use. UConn is already ranked higher than all three of those teams in the NET and ahead of two of them on Massey. So do we trust the analytics or the media?
Knocking off SCar in their house would move UConn to No 1 in the media poll, not because they would be without doubt No 1 but because that game will likely draw one of the biggest audiences of the year and an upset would be almost as big as Clark/Iowa beating the Gamecocks in the FF. Before the win vs SCar. Clark had been doing her thing with some media coverage for 2.5 years. She became a star from that game. The media would ride the excitement of a UConn win right through to the FF.
The only important game to win is the last one UConn plays in any season.

Gotta' agree. UCLA looked meh at best. Other than the big girl, they didn't come close to impressing. Texas just out and out spanked the Terrapins silly, who looked lost the entire night!

Can Jana defend Betts? My big question is how will UConn handle a team that has size and that will be answered in part when they play South Carolina. Lots of questions still abound but I think UConn has a good team and has the potential on any night to be unbeatable.

To win the game you must score more points then your opponent. With UConn is shooting over 50% its much easier. How many teams have a Paige Azzi and Sarah? How many teams can out score them? Barring injuries and foul trouble I dont think any team in WCBB has the defense to stop these 3 let alone the rest of our UConn team.

Beating South Carolina would be a good win but it wouldn't move UConn past any team ahead of them that doesn't also lose. South Carolina already lost to the number 1 team so I don't know how beating them would automatically make you higher ranked. ND and USC both have head to head wins against UConn so they aren't falling below UConn unless they lose too.

A win against South Caroline will be a huge win for the girls. It will prove to them they can beat a great team on the road which to me would mean they can play with any team. Make no mistake though UConn will have to play good ball to beat several teams this year but yes they are capable.

I agree. It may not even be enough to move past teams that do lose. We have 2 losses, though only to top-10 teams. But the only losses I can imagine for teams 1-5 will be to top teams. Maybe, just maybe, USC could lose to tOSU. But that would only allow LSU to move up. And LSU is likely to lose to SC, but that’s not going to rut them in the rankings. If we beat SC, that gives them 2 losses to top-10 teams, but it doesn’t necessarily mean we move up, and they’d not be likely to drop off the top line of the tournament bracket.

Texas at #7 barely squeaked past #17 Tennessee and I doubt they’ll drop because of that. On the other hand, if we lose to Tennessee or barely squeak past them, we could well drop a few spots. But losing to SC probably won’t change much in our ranking, especially since Texas is likely to get another spanking from SC themselves.

I'd agree if the AP was doing the seedings but they aren't. UConn does better with analytic ratings than the AP's subjective opinions.

If UConn beats SCar and Tenn they will be No 1 in the NET rankings and every No1 NET team has been a 1 seed.

Current Net rankings
1. SCar
2. UConn
3. Texas
4. UCLA
5. USC
6. NDame

Is the committee going to deny their own rating system and use the AP rankings like Creme?

You're preaching to the choir here, and I've always thought the NET rankings should matter more than they sometimes seem to in the committee's deliberations. The NET is only one bit of information they use, but is not decisive by itself. I don't understand the way the committee operates well enough to be able to make a forecast about how the seedings will turn out this year.

As for the AP rankings, that's another story. This is a much more diffuse 'committee' and obeys no rules I know of. But they may be more predictable because of that.UCLA will not be dislodged from the #1 spot without at least one, maybe two embarrassing losses, and this seems unlikely at this point. They've already beaten SC and that pretty much sealed their spot.

And ND and USC are not likely to fall even with another loss or two, and if they were to, LSU would be more likely to move into their vacated spot than UConn. On the other hand, looking at LSU's upcoming games, they're likely to lose to SC today, and could take a loss to Texas or Tennessee. If they lose all three of these, I can see how we might pass them in the rankings.

The committee denied their own rating system last year in making UConn a 3 seed

No, there were other considerations

3 #1 Seeds are pretty much locked. SC, ND and UCLA, so we are fighting for the 4th vs USC, TX and LSU. (Big12 about to knock themselves out)

A 2 loss UConn team would get that fourth #1, unless one of USC, TX and LSU won out from here including the tournament. All of these teams still play each other, so will end up most likely with 3-5 losses.

The #1 seeds are not remotely locked in. There is a good chance that UCLA and ND both end up with 3 or more losses.
If UConn beats SC and TN (unlikely but possible), they are very very likely to be a 1 seed.

This is not true by any stretch.
The NET rankings had UCONN as a 1 seed. Other factors may have contributed to a justifiable downward ranking of a two seed. Nothing warranted dropping them to a three seed.

iMHO, the committee abused its discretion in applying its subjective opinion that much over the objective NET system. Where it drops (or raises a team that far below its NET rank it should be required to justify the decision in writing. Its decision wads more like the AP ranking than the NET. Subjectivity over objectivity.

UConn’s SOS was higher than SCar’s. strength of conference is a horrible factor that was apparently weighed heavily against UCONN by the committee. Talk about subjective! Teams win championships - not conferences.

UConn proved on the court that it was a one seed.

End of rant,

NET rankings don't "have" teams as any seed because NET doesn't determine seeding. I don't know why people keep trying to make the NET into something it's not.

Based on the lack of quality wins and the fact that UConn was soundly beaten in every game played against teams seeded 5 or higher, a 3 seed was quite fair.

UConn proved on the court that it was a one seed.
Not how it works. Upsets happen in every tournament and don't disprove validity of seeing. What about the previous year, when LSU was a 3 seed? Did they "prove" they should have been the overal #1 instead of SC?

If you watched the LSU v SC game yesterday, it was clear from the outset ( even though SC started slowly) that SC would win. UCONN can be a tough out if every thing is clicking, and that includes superb coaching and use of player matchups. It also requires each player on UCONN to be on their "A: game ( Chen, KK, ASH, the big Three and Aubrey.). We have three superstars, SC has 5. We have 4 outstanding other players, they have 6. We have an emerging fine player at the post. They have three really good players there. The final game this season will be SC v UCLA and SC will win again. I hope I am wrong, but I don't think we are good enough even in the best of circumstances. Unless, of course, we hit 80% from the arc.

I'm just curious, because I see this all the time. Why do we not count Sarah Strong as a frontcourt player, but we count other team's forwards as frontcourt players?

For SC on the frontcourt they will bring Kitts, Feagin, Edwards & Dauda. We will counter with Sarah, Jana, Aubrey, Morgan & Ice.

Sarah plays both forward with Jana/Ice and center for us with Morgan/Aubrey. She will probably play 40min vs SC in the post guarding 1 of their 3 post stars.

We are very lucky to have an all-american caliber power forward/center playing with maturity and range of a senior. Without her we would be in big trouble this year against teams with excellent front courts.

Without Sarah , we would be a .500 team. But we would still win the Big East.

I agree with most of what you say Tonyc, but a win against @SC will not put UConn back on top of WCBB even if they also beat TN. They only get back on top if UCLA, USC and ND go down as well.
I can't imagine that anyone thinks this UCONN team, at its present stage of development, has any chance of beating South Carolina in their home court. We barely beat Creighton.

Uhm, I think this present UConn has “ a chance of beating” us. Even on our court.

Especially after our shooting performance against LSU

I think the TN game represents a better test for the SC game than Creighton. SCand TN are similar in speed, length and athleticism, it's just SC is more disciplined and better coached.

in your honest opinion what is the percentage you think we win. I put it at 15% for us to win the game.
