Monday 11/4

First games of the season. A lot of teams, especially those teams that matched up against ranked teams, started off slow and the timing and shooting was off. I really enjoyed watching ND in their game. Like I said in a previous post, Olivia Miles looked solid and with a triple double in her return. Well done.

South Carolina/Michigan. Chole Kitts held it down for South Carolina. I have always been a fan of hers. She understands the whole concept of "Control the Controllables". She may not get the hype/press like a lot of players, but she knows her attitude and effort are two things she controls, and she always handles her business.

Michigan hung in there. I am impressed. I honestly thought that they would get their doors blown off, but they hung in there and gave South Carolina a little scare. The shots weren't falling, for either team really, but the ones that did fall for Michigan they were huge, especially those two 3-point shots by Syla Swords. Speaking of Swords. Solid game for her and a huge boost to her confidence. The difference in this game, bench. 30/6 South Carolina.

Nice opening day for WBB overall.

A game you can't really take anything away from, but Washington w/ a laugher 95-53 over cross town Seattle U. Everybody played, everybody scored at least 4 points, nobody played more than 23 minutes.

Solid opening day of basketball! Some good battles to start the season:

USC/Ole Miss - this game was all kinds of ugly but it looked like Ole Miss was primed to steal the win, only to blow it down the stretch. Tough loss but has to be a confidence booster to start the year for Law's team. Deans was huge nailing 4 or 5 triples in the second half. I thought Madison Scott played well. They would've won this game if Kennedy Todd-Williams could throw it in the ocean (shot 2-18). They had good looks but zero rhythm in the first. Props to the Rebs though, they fought back and took the lead late after being down by double digits. For USC, a win is a win, but they looked far too dependent on Watkins. Everything ran through her and it often led to a turnover or Juju trying to draw a foul rather than trying to score. That said, she had some great plays and was aggressive taking the ball to the basket and not settling for jumpers. She was also a menace defensively. She's a great player but they have too much talent to rely on hero ball. Von Oelhoffen was a no show, Iriafen looked good but could've had more touches. Kennedy Smith had a really solid debut for USC. Active player, good frame and they mentioned probably 5x on the broadcast that Gottlieb said she's the best freshman defender she's ever coached. Rayah Marshall was completely uninvolved offensively. USC's team defense looked pretty good overall.

Louisville/UCLA - I just caught the end of this one. Gardiner has one of the cleanest/prettiest releases I've seen. UCLA struggled with TOs but were without Rice, so they get a pass in that department. Solid night for Betts. Louisville looked like a standard Jeff Walz team, being a roster of mostly new players that are undersized but athletic and work hard even if it isn't pretty. Tajianna Roberts was electric for Louisville and will be a name to watch.

South Carolina/Michigan - mad props to Michigan and Kim Barnes Arico for giving South Carolina everything they could handle. Syla Swords was by far the best player on the court tonight and is a star in the making. Side tangent, but her path reminds me a bit of Caitlin Clark's in that both are 6-0 guards who were #4 recruits and chose a consistently good but not elite Big 10 program. She was everywhere tonight, hit clutch shots and was really good at attacking SC's defense. Again, by far the best player on the court tonight. Jordan Hobbs also hit some big 3s in the second half to keep the game close and the whole team just really battled. For South Carolina, it was far from their best effort. The rebounding was not nearly as strong without Cardoso/Watkins in the lineup.

Going player by player:

Kitts-best SC player of the night. Just worked her butt off and was aggressive on both ends. Dawn will have a hard time taking her out of the lineup with her motor.

Tessa Johnson-the second best SC player of the night. She knocked down triples and was very good attacking off the dribble. Every time I watch her I come away impressed.

Raven Johnson-the offense had no flow, she missed several perimeter shots too. Forgettable game for her.

Milaysia Fulwiley-had some nice plays offensively, still seems a little lost at times offensively and doesn't always make the smart play. Forgettable game for her.

Sania Feagin-limited minute but came out flat and just didn't make an impact.

Bree Hall-hit a big shot late, defended well, was mostly irrelevant though throughout the night

Pao Pao-attacked the basket well, knocked down a couple of perimeter shots too. I thought she had an okay game, though far from her best effort.

Dauda-limited minutes, took a couple of threes and missed them. Not a lot else to report on.

Adhel Tac-I thought she gave SC some nice minutes even though she missed a bunny and a pair of FTs. She is a big presence inside and I think she'll be a really good player down the road. Not sure if she'll contribute much this season, especially if Watkins comes back.

Joyce Edwards-mixed game for her. The pluses are that she's incredibly athletic (blocked a shot off the backboard) and has some of the best hands for catching passes/rebounds I'ver ever seen. Just magnets for hands and high energy and a nose for the ball. When guarding Hobbs on the perimeter she got caught behind a couple of screens which led to open 3s, but I thought she defended well in the paint. Didn't seem super polished offensively but is high energy and has a great motor. She's going to be really good.

I will say, overall I thought this was the most entertaining game of the 3. The offense was painful at times but it was high energy and both teams were battling hard every possession. Swords nailing the back to back triples late was very impressive and Michigan scrapped hard as underdogs. If they play like this every night, Michigan will surprise a lot of folks in the Big Ten. For SC, they're extremely talented and will be fine long term, but the contrast from the Paris opening game last year to this one is drastic.

Stanford has hit the century mark against LeMoyne with some time left to go. I thought Tess Heal could be a good addition for them, she isn't playing tonight. Anybody know anything about that? Anyway probably gonna win most nights if you shoot 18-34 from 3. Harriel and Bosgana combined 11-14 and have scored 43 points.

…Missouri does trail Vermont by 11 in the second quarter though. That’s something to pay attention to.
At least they stood by Pingeton though, amirite?

Of the three SEC teams who clearly needed a change, Missouri was the only one to stand pat. They asked for this.

.-.
I just watched bits and pieces, then the full last 3-4 minutes of the USC-Ole Miss game. Ole Miss almost pulled off an upset of a loaded but young Women of Troy team.

Interesting bit of trivia... SC's JuJu Watkins and Kennedy Smith starred on California Open state title teams that beat Morgan Cheli's Archbishop Mitty in the finals (I think two consecutive years), and I saw both games in-person.

So Charlotte over Presbyterian was another case of one of your teams beating another of your teams?

Yes, but the Blue Hose (Defending Big South champs) rank higher on my list than the 49ers.

Great opening day as the Arizona schools all won. The jacks scored 31 in the fourth quarter as they escaped the pit with an 80 to 78 victory over a rebuilding lobo team. Big Skype preseason player of the year Sophie Clancy wins the game as time expires with a short hook shot.

Molly Miller looks to have the loops ready to rock and roll as they scored 93 at home against Bakersfield who was over 17 from three land wow the lopes we're 14 for 26.

Adair wills her team to a fourth quarter come back at home as the Sun Devils edge Jax State by 8. This easily could be the only time the Sun Devils are over 500 this season.

And.... The kitties.Rhey take care of UTA at McKale.

The odds of the Arizona schools all prevailing on a single day are the same as mine in running a four minute mileI

I was surprised to see my Wolverines hang with my Gamecocks. Michigan looked good. I'm excited to see how the season plays out here in Ann Arbor this year. Syla Swords! S. Carolina didn't play the best game but it's only game 1. They'll be fine, especially if/ when Watkins comes back.

Thanks. I just looked them up. Maybe ND is helping out a fellow Catholic school?
Wouldn't surprise me. That was the take of one of our Benchers who is from Erie.
For those with long memories, Kayla McBride is from Erie, Pa. and went to Catholic schools in the area.
Mercyhurst is travelling to Chicago to play DePaul next, so the Catholic U's in the area seem to be tag-teaming here.

USC escapes. Fairly unimpressed with them. That's some of that great coaching from Gottlieb huh?
Logistic issue of traveling overseas, time change although I suspect they've been over there for a while, first game of the season, two ranked teams. Kind of an expected outcome Allah the Huskies

Yeah, I'm not really sure what the end game is. How much do people watch American sports in Europe? I know the NFL and NBA have some games internationally, but I have no idea what the actual pay off is for doing this.
There are a number of valid and rational reasons for games like these. Branding invisibility really does offer the opportunity for increased penetration of the women's game. The motivation for individual teams is varied I know Geno has taken teams in the past to Europe for exhibitions. There may well also be a recruiting angle here and most importantly international travel for college age students is what I would consider a good thing

Pretty clear that Oregon has turned the page from last season‘s disaster. 13 threes at 42% opposed to hitting 10 only twice all last year. Early days though. Nevada Wednesday then a real test on Sunday versus Baylor.

How much did TAMU pay Joni Taylor to lure her from Georgia ...
to finish in the bottom quarter?

This is year 3. Need to start getting results.
I personally have never thought Joni was that great of a coach and they aren’t bringing in a lot of talent.

Good points, all.
Not to mention, they clearly have a very interested sponsor in Aflac, who has bought into the concept....which is no small deal.

I think it gives ESPN, which fancies itself as the brand carrier of Women's Sports, an exclamation point to start the season.

Is that debateable? Until 2-3 years ago, the only other network with WBB was the occasional mid-major game on CBS SN.

I didn't really follow their roster churn in the off season. Looks like McKayla Williams vanished into thin air. Kemery Martin got married and is now at BYU. Mia Mastrov...another with no info I can find. Maybe concentrating on tiktok full time now? Oh, and Muca to Pepperdine.

They've got a bunch of grad students. Didn't realize Krimili had another year to use. Onyiah has seen a whole bunch of players come and go, she's still there!

The key element here is Syla Swords went for 20 pts. and 12 rebounds in her first collegiate game against the defending national champions. That bodes well for Kim Barnes Arrico and the Wolverines.

BTW, another forward -- Chloe Kitts -- acquitted herself really well, too, with a double-double of her own (19 pts., 14 rebounds) for the Gamecocks. That team is loaded at guard. If forwards like Kitts score like that, Dawn will be very happy while making countless Aflac commercials. ;)

Might as well go public: charges against Ashlyn Watkins have been dismissed

She's still way behind in comparison to Coach Prime and Coach Saban ;)

Mastrov graduated and left basketball. Kemery graduated and moved on and Muca did as well....Michelle is doing her fifth graduate (Covid) year (school of public health) and is poised to have a standout season....We got some excellent transfers in including Kayla Williams (USC) who is starting at point, Natalia Ackerman (from Cal Poly) and Jayda Nobles (UW-you know her ;-) feisty defender). Our frosh class is strong too....excited to see them on the floor last night. We actually have some depth and as the newcomers get their sea legs, I'm looking forward to the season. Bears knocked down 14 3 pointers last night...here's the box score: Cal WBB vs Saint Mary's box score (PDF) - California Golden Bears Athletics

Good luck. She never figured out how to stay out of foul trouble while she was at UW. Or shoot with any consistency. With her athleticism I thought she would be really good driving to the hoop but that didn't materialize either.

Just realized Jayda Curry didn't play for Louisville yesterday against UCLA. Anybody know the story with her?

Hamstring injury. Had posted this in the injuries thread earlier. Hadn't thought of posting it here. (d'oh!)

I thought for a minute of checking the injury report thread, but that has gotten too long (unfortunately) so didn't go hunting there.

Read a story on Hailey Van Lith's debut with TCU, in which she and Prince both scored in the 20's (and no one else in double figures, if memory holds). I also noticed Maddie Scherr's name was not in the boxscore but a quick google came up blank. Anyone know what's up?
