Thanks for the article, but nobody following her recruitment story could believe Mercedes was a stay-at-home. She's looking at Louisville and other east coast schools, so that notion is rubbish.

Do the "other east coast schools" include Kentucky and Tennessee?

I made that comment because I asked in another thread how hard Geno was going after her and someone said something to the tune of, "well, UConn might be too far from home" sort of thing.. I think if he eases up on recruiting her he'd be making a huge mistake

Well I just spoke to the journalist who wrote the story and you are correct.. Her exact words were, "I would bet everything I own she does not end up at UConn ... She's a Tenn girl at heart. I personally think she'll wind up at L'Ville or Kentucky. But that's just my gut." I will give up my hopes and dreams of her playing for us lol
well it would be great to see her end up at L'ville or Kentucky. i'm rooting for her and Muvunga to end up at one of those schools. Some Tennessee fans are still operating under the notion that they will land a plethora of top 10 kids from 2013.

but i do feel your "pain" in wanting Geno to recruit every special kid who comes along. if you look at the number of literally top 5 kids in thier class, he's landed a ton in the past 7-8 years. and i'm not just talking about kids who were rated top 5 coming out of HS, but kids who were top 5 by the time they left UCONN...

Tina, Renee, Maya, Elena (altho the "by the time they left UCONN doesn't count), Bria, Kaleena, Breanna, Moriah, Morgan... and that's basically in only a 7 year timeline (if my math is right - it's late).

and no one knows who we will get for 2013. Saniya seems like a good bet. Erica and Diamond are still very much in the mix. there is not a single school who has recruited as well as UCONN has in the past 7-8 years or so. we are livin the dream right now.

As I Louisville fan, I would be absolutely thrilled to land Mercedes. A dominant post player on the offensive and defensive end is what we are missing. If she commits to the Cards I expect MaVunga and possibly Becca Greenwell to follow suit (She seems to be leaning a bit towards ND at the moment. Same with Reimer) I loved how Mercedes mentioned playing in the east. I think she will end up in the BE but playing for who? Louisville seems to be the only BE ever mentioned in the articles I read.

Lady Vols fans do seem rather confident on landing a lot of the E13 kids. I can't see it happening with Pat's current situation and a possible coaching changing. It wouldn't surprise me if Pat is coaching for another year or two and then steps down leaving these kids with an awkward situation having to play for a coach that didn't recruit them, playing a different style, ect....and she is 6'6 now and only 16!!! WOW! Wonder if she will grow another 3 inches or so before college.

Article in the Oregonian has her down to 10 schools no Uconn. The list is: Tennessee, Louisville, Kentucky, Notre Dame, Georgia, USC, Duke, North Carolina, LSU or Baylor

Why would a big 6"5 post want to go all the way to Kentucky? There system is just full court press and trap all day that is not condusive to a big post player. then on offense the teams that press all the time usually run poor sets and jack shots. kentucky, georgetown, georgia tech for example. Womens game needs more parity, these west coast girls it would be nice to see them go to schools other than Stanford like CAL, UCLA, WASHINGTON, OREGON. 9 of 10 schools on Russell's list are non west coast schools. On the boys side they build up programs but on the girls side its basically the same schools getting these players. not bitter because uconn wasn't recruiting her anyways and I had no expectation of her coming to Storrs but just speaking in generalities. getting a stronger pac-12 is good for the game. right now it is TERRIBLE in both MBB and WBB. Stanford WBB carries the league and then on mens side ONE tournament team this year.

Tenn fans a dilousional. With Pats condition they are in the rebuilding mode for at least, and I said at least 7 years. They still dont have a coach and nobody is going their based on their past accomplishments. IF you think Im wrong look at LaTech and Texas. Nobody is going there on past accomplishments, are they???? Tenn is spirolling down without a parachute.

Im not sure what Mercedes will do. I do know UConn is playing Oregon home and away. That could mean something. UConn has so much to offer for a female BB player who wants it. For the next 6 seasons UConn is an All Star team of All AMericans.

she's been to TN twice....and is still in high contact with program. all recruits are waiting on official announcement and have been advised that a decision will be made in the near future. if pat leaves it will be a sad day in TN. however, keep in mind there will be a lot of excitement and support surrounding the next chapter and SOME, not all, girls will want to be a part of the next new chapter in the most popular program in the country. and please don't take that as a slight at UCONN, i am simply talking attendance and fan support.

it is not all doom and gloom. we got to the elite 8 without a head coach actually coaching...pretty darn good. AND i might add that we finished strong and actually played baylor better than ND.

tenn should be fine because I don't know if Pat would just retire out of the blue. She could stay on as an advisor and help w/ the transition to a new coach esp. if the new coach is one of her former players.

u nailed it my friend. it won't be a sharp departure. pat is apparently very engaged and still actively recruiting....and i def think nikki caldwell or kelly jolly will take over.

Tonyc, I see what you mean by delusional.

Regarding doom and gloom, the players who got TN to the elite 8, all highly ranked players coming out of HS, will be gone. So, you're hinting that without those highly rated players, TN will be better than this year? I guess if you consider fan support and decreasing attendance as the criteria for success, instead of wins, then you're right. I'm not so sure about the fan support though. Seems like TN fans were quite brutally critical of this year's team.

I hope you won't take this as bullying.

I won't argue the popularity statement you made. There is no doubt that Tennessee has great support from their fans. Attendance is great, although I'd be interested to see how it is next year after the "farewell" tour that was a great tribute to Summitt this year. They had a nice bump this season, but had been trending downward prior to that.

Certainly Tennessee is still in the mix for Russell. But the coaching uncertainty will have a big impact on her decision. If Pat steps down and they hire a new head coach, I would think that other options like Louisville would be more attractive. I guess we will find out soon enough.

In regards to this year, getting to the elite 8 with the talent of Stricklen, Johnson and Baugh along with Massingale and Simmons is nothing surprising, coaching situation or not. and ND had shot it's load against UConn 2 nights earlier and playing closer is nothing to brag about when you lose by 19.

Next year? You lose an incredible amount of production and return some players that have never had to be the go to players. From Volprime on The SUmmitt

Simmons - 25 mpg, 11.1 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 1.3 apg, 37.5% fg, 31.1% 3's.
Massingale - 28.4 mpg, 7.4 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 4.9 apg, 38.7% fg, 33.3% 3's.
Harrison - 8.4 mpg, 3.3 ppg, 2.7 rpg, .1 apg, 36.7% fg, 0% 3's.
Burdick - 13.5 mpg, 4.6 ppg, 2.8 rpg, .9 apg, 46.3% fg, 33.3% 3's.
Spani - 20.8 mpg, 6.6 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 1.3 apg, 37.2% fg, 40.0% 3's.

Returning bench

Williams - 11.3 mpg, 2.8 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 1.3 apg, 41.3% fg, 0% 3's.

That's 35.8 ppg, 14.5 rpg, 9.8 apg coming back.

I'd love to hear how this team, with the addition of 1 very good recruit and 2 good ones and maybe 2 JC players will make up for who they lost. I just don't see it.

Pardon the interruption, but if you're missing a center, maybe you should look at the Louisville roster for the last few years and figure out where all your previous centers have disappeared to.

The KFC Yum! Center is becoming the black hole of WCBB.

Tammy Hill never thought her daughter would blossom into one of the best players in the country. Heck, she didn't even think Russell would be that tall, considering Hill is just 5-foot-7 and Mercedes dad, Lorenzo Russell, is 5-foot-11. Mercedes wasn't even the tallest player on her eighth grade team.
So much for genetics, huh?

I'm 5-8. My mom was 5-4 on her good days and my dad was 5-9. I'm a throwback to my 6-0 great-grandfather.

This is the first time that I have seen Baylor on her list. I like that development. Maybe she would like to carry on Griner's legacy for Mulkey. Waco is loaded with tall guys.

This settles it...she is coming to Baylor. She is ready to play Texas Tech already.

"I don't know how she keeps such a cool head," Hill said. "I probably would have punched about 10 people by now."
