Meet UConn commit Gandy Malou-Mamel

To put it rather mildly, this is crap dreadfully poor journalism. The “editing”, such as it is, isn't, failed to address the errors.
Someone named Zanetto is quoted, but not identified.

The subject is worthy of better writing.

I think some here are underestimating Gandy’s potential effect on this team next seasn. Though still raw, I’m guessing she will be substantially more effective than DeBerry and will therefore give us a 6’5” backup for Jana (10-15 mostly defensive minutes). Perhaps I am reaching a bit but given the overall talent of this roster, I think this is extremely possible.

I don’t think it’s a reach at all. I think Gandy will bring exactly what Kiah Stokes did, a strong long-armed defensive presence and rebounder who will be a decent low-post threat on offense. Sure, she’s still raw, as Kiah was, but she’s very athletic like her, too. The key is that they’re both mobile bigs, which Amari and Piath weren’t.

She’ll get three years playing next to Jana, two with Ice and Ayanna, and maybe four with Lara if all goes well. This is an environment she can grow her skills and thrive in. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Gandy ends up in the W when all is said and done.

Wondering why she was so invisible during this summers AAU season. Heard nothing about her.

I was hoping for an audio interview, looking forward to hearing her accent. :)

A reminder what Gandy was doing this summer. She also appeared in AAU tournaments here in the US with her AAU team, the New Jersey Shore Shots

I've known Tiny for a long time and he is a great judge of talent but can be a bit hyperbolic........GMM may be the more impactful player but right now guards Mia Pauldo and her twin sister Mya from Morris Catholic are both better basketball players at this point in their journeys.......

She doesn't have one, really.

Thanks. I wasn't expecting anything particular -- I'm definitely hearing American and Irish.

I liked when she said she's more comfortable in the cool rain. I had a close Irish friend in school, and in the spring when it was cold and rainy for the better a month, he'd get homesick.

I've read a couple articles on college wrestling from this "source" and can assure you those articles were similarly atrocious. "Essentially Sports" seems to be "Total Garbage" as a sports news source.

Gandy probably knows Dan Hurley through his dad, Bob Hurley Sr. She was working with him last year, don't know if she still is, but that could help account for her rapid improvement. Hurley Sr isn't in the Hall of Fame for nothing.
The connection is her mentor, Kieran Quinn who brought her over from Ireland. Quinn is a long time friend of the Hurley family and is the other guy in the picture.

So what's the deal? Gandy and Sidney play one-on-one in the family driveway with the hoop over the garage every day? Not a bad way to train and improve one's skills.

Saw videos when she first committed and was like meh, not impressed but who knows. Looking at her now, she has definitely gotten a lot better and looks bigger and stronger. We still have to see, but we might have something here. Like something something.

She's improved a whole lot, especially over the past year........at this point she will be a solid low post presence at both ends of the court but if she continues improving, she could be far more than that........

I agree. I haven’t seen more recent video than the summer games, but the areas she says she working on are court awareness and being in the right place at the right time. I suspect her coach is also working on polishing her post moves so she doesn’t miss contested layups. And maybe developing a midrange game — the midrange is what propelled Iriafen to the next level and probably into the lottery.

Gandy can be a really good college player without perfecting her midrange scoring — Kiah did it after all — as long as she hoovers up all the defensive rebounds and defends well. There will be plenty of scorers around her in Storrs. But add to her offensive arsenal and she will be something really impressive. Slow bigs are one thing, they can be useful, even essential to winning. But bigs with real foot speed like Gandy are rare, like A’ja or Stewie rare. The ceiling is very high for her.
