Meet UConn commit Gandy Malou-Mamel

Saw videos when she first committed and was like meh, not impressed but who knows. Looking at her now, she has definitely gotten a lot better and looks bigger and stronger. We still have to see, but we might have something here. Like something something.

She's improved a whole lot, especially over the past year........at this point she will be a solid low post presence at both ends of the court but if she continues improving, she could be far more than that........

I agree. I haven’t seen more recent video than the summer games, but the areas she says she working on are court awareness and being in the right place at the right time. I suspect her coach is also working on polishing her post moves so she doesn’t miss contested layups. And maybe developing a midrange game — the midrange is what propelled Iriafen to the next level and probably into the lottery.

Gandy can be a really good college player without perfecting her midrange scoring — Kiah did it after all — as long as she hoovers up all the defensive rebounds and defends well. There will be plenty of scorers around her in Storrs. But add to her offensive arsenal and she will be something really impressive. Slow bigs are one thing, they can be useful, even essential to winning. But bigs with real foot speed like Gandy are rare, like A’ja or Stewie rare. The ceiling is very high for her.

Agreed........I think she is just starting to gain the kind of court awareness that she'll need at the next level.......a midrange jump shot and a baby hook would turn her into more than just another layup making post.......I hesitate to compare anyone to Stokes who has a preternatural shot-blocking ability....

You have a point. It's those long arms. I take heart from looking at Gandy's long arms, long for a 6'6" player.
Stewie is a 6'4" forward with a 6'11" wingspan; Gandy is a 6'6" forward/center with a nearly 7' wingspan, if she can run the court like Stewie, she can learn the rest...

You can't teach tall or wingspan...

...and the beautiful part is she can learn from Jana, and can be the Power Forward {backup at both center and Power Forward - with ICE, Yanna, and Strong} while Jana is the Center next year!!! Geno & CD will be able to keep fresh Bigs in the game, all game...

Go Huskies!
