Matthews Decommits

What does it mean "I am not closing the door on UConn.."
It means people here will argue that Hurley told him he is better off somewhere else, or that he’s not good enough to play here anyway, or that he would have been our second best player next year, or that he’s scared to compete for playing time.

Take your pick.

Why is everybody so ornery right now? Jeez.
It means that the player is either keeping us as a potential landing spot or is just saying that to be respectful to us even if he doesn't mean it.
No need to get all insulty about it and attack your fellow BYers.

Maybe Dan Hurley took a look at Polley and thought, "Hmm, a 6-8 small forward who shot 42% from 3-pt range last year. And then there's Sid. And I need guards. Better give Matthews fair warning."
(and with Delaire as our #1 2019 target, this is exactly what happened)

Please tell me you are being sarcastic? Have you watched his tape? Half of his highlights are him grabbing uncontested rebounds below the rim!

Let me tell you I'm not sarcastic. Please tell me you're not that dumb about basketball not to see the skills? Guess you are. But thanks for your input.

My impression was that it was largely the lack of offensive coaching for that. It didn't seem that anyone beyond Adams, Larrier and Vital were given the freedom to create. And for being a spot up shooter, hard when those three mostly sought their own shot.

Could be but I think he would have had the freedom if he proved he could. He looked scared with the ball quite honestly and there was nothing that led me to believe anyone would let him go on his own. He needs to really tighten his handle, get a stop and pop game in the lane and rebound the ball - stronger over the summer is the key. Bobby SR said the next few months are huge for all of these kids and I totally agree. With strength comes confidence in many parts of their games.

I prefer the simple, straightforward narrative: the people that recruited Matthews are now gone - Chill only recently - and Matthews wants assurances that this new coach and his system will suit him. We do not know if Hurley has tried to assure him ... we do know that both parties agree that resetting the process is necessary.

Hurley would probably play him at the 4. I know a lot of wings HATE the thought of playing the 4 because in the league they would play the 2 or 3.

Many folks here always believe grass is always greener. No one is as good as that next recruit. Those highlight videos where a kid dominates future rec league ballers gets em all the time.

Whoa now...what they hell will become of this place if people insist on talking in clear, common sense terms like this? Tom better stock up on Ramen if we keep going like this.

We now resume the overly emotional, often irrational and always frenzied combination of panic and horror and simultaneous elation and joy that usually occupies this space.

Hopefully people are smart enough to filter the obvious and look at the skill set in the reality of what will become another level for him. I guess some can't.

He's gone and I am real curious to see what Dan Hurley has up his sleeve as I am sure he's way ahead of me that's for sure.

Well, as you say, he was given no freedom. One shot, and he was yanked. Of course he looked scared.

Not that that is a problem. He was a raw freshman. Is what it is.

It would be Intersting if both Matthews and Akinjo ended up at West Virginia.

(Don’t know if it’s possible but that is one common school that stood out).

Im not too worried about this at all and it was expected. I expect some announcements in the coming weeks of URI guys re committing to Dan Hurley here.

If Cox gets the head job at URI you won’t be seeing that, keep up with the news..

Thanks for visiting a champions site, you must feel privileged. Your interest in UConn basketball is duly noted. Keep up with the big time programs.

Funny people saying # 135 is no big deal. There are like 550000 HS BB players and 337 D1 schools. simple math would say this is a reasonably big deal. 135 is a lot closer to 1 than 550000. All the "no big deal" posts are kinda whistling in the graveyard.

Matthews seemed like a one-note player. I'd prefer him to stick around, but you can definitely do better than Matthews. This kid has Ryan Thompson written all over him.

You are all missing the point. The priority this season should be recruiting a replacement for Jalen Adams so he can play behind him for a year and then step in to challenge Vital and Gilbert. I also think the Kisunas kid is a priority, we need muscle badly. If he can turn Polley into a catch and shoot threat from three a la Giffey then you'll have something on offense.

This team will win or lose with defense next season regardless of who comes in.

Interesting. Of all the true frosh kisunas is the one I’d be most ok losing. Now he’s the only one left.
