Matt Cross Leaves Miami

Need the backstory before we'd even consider this kid.

Solid backup plan for Burnett, to take Brown’s scholarship. I’m assuming Bouks scholarship would go to Whaley if he wants it.

I think he has been described as a poor mans Tyler Polley
maybe in terms of being a one dimensional catch and shoot 3 point specialist, but Cross started nine games this year, ranked fifth on the team in points and fourth in rebounds and shot 20 for 50 from 3-point range(40%). much more productive as a freshman than polley was. polley was a nonfactor until his junior year.

Did we recruit him? Did he show any interest?
we offered him in 9/18. this article is from 1/19:
Said that Marquette, Penn State and UConn are the three schools that have prioritized him, specifically, “they’re just reaching out more than everyone else and trying to get me up to their schools." On UConn, he said "I just like that [Dan] Hurley plays all of his guys and their style of play I think fits mine."

besides miami, 247 lists him as having also visited a&m, florida, south carolina, and butler

While we wait for some info about why they parted ways, we ought to look at how the team's other highly rated players are faring, and the coach, before judging Cross. Maybe Larranaga is the bigger problem when you consider how some of his recruits are doing.

24/7 had:Harlond Beverly(Sophomore), 4 star, as the National #54 and #9 CG;
Earl Timberlake (Freshman), 4 star, as the National #35 and #7 SG;
Matt Cross (Freshman), 4 star, as the National #93 and #20 SF

They're all playing close to the same minutes and averaging around 7 points, but Beverly as a sophomore has awful shooting percentages compared toTimberlake and Cross.

24/7 on Cross: strong build and is effective in traffic. Much more of a productive player than an explosive athlete. Combo forward type who rebounds well, shoots well and can play on the wing or in high post. Adequate ball handler and passer. Smart defender who has versatility, although he is not the quickest defender.

No real answers on Miami's Board but the general thought is he must have said he wanted to transfer. Also speculation that he came onto the floor for FSU game with mismatched shoes and when told to change he said IDGAF. Doesn't sound like a good coach/player relationship.

All speculative but maybe it was as simple as Cross telling his Coach "where to go" and his Coach didn't want to "lose the team" .Had to save face. In the heat of the battle disagreement.

If the breakup started over shoes, he should be welcome here.

I've worn the same sweatpants and mismatched slippers for most of the past year and I definitely DGAF. I say we cut the kid some slack and embrace him.

Shhhh !

Grayson Allen may be listening and you are due for a trip or elbow.

There should be an annual Bill Laimbeer award...he brought hockey play to basketball.

Yup, I’d be all for him.

I’d be more careful than the consensus seems to be. It really doesn’t matter what the fight started over. At some point, no matter how trivial it started, a player has to understand that the coach is the boss and take an order or you can’t have him on your team. Larranága may be nearing the end of his run, but he’s gone 70 years with a good deal of success and no reputation for being overly harsh in getting rid of players.

Is it possible Cross can go anywhere and be a good enough citizen to take advantage of his talent? Sure it’s possible. But with no more facts than we have, I’m not sure that’s where the smart money is.

He better be a very good shooter.
