Some postgame thoughts on the Marquette game.
  • Marquette is one of the top teams in the BE. Some may conclude that UConn’s 36 pt victory demonstrates how weak the conference is. IMO, like almost all the wins over P4 teams, it actually shows just how strong this UConn team is.
  • Marquette had their entire roster return this season and they shoot a collective 40% from the arc. They also average a rather high 15+ turnovers a game. Tonight, the Huskies held the Golden Eagles to 5/16 (31%) from the arc while forcing 15 Golden Eagle turnovers in the 1st half and 21 for the game
  • I like what I’m seeing from Serah who is really settling into her role as she becomes more and more comfortable with her teammates and the UConn system. Specifically, her cuts are sharper and her passing from the high post is excellent.
  • Yes, there were some head scratching turnovers by the Huskies in the 1st half. Sarah had been 7th in the nation with a 3.77 A/TO ratio. Tonight she had 6 turnovers and only 2 assists. 🤯
  • Blanca continues to be UConn’s X-FACTOR with her quickness and athleticism, making plays at both ends of the court.
  • Back in the dark ages I used to play Rugby. The play at halfcourt where 3 Huskies and 2 Golden Eagles were trying to wrestle the ball from each other was the closest thing to a “rugby ruck” that I have ever seen on a basketball court. 🫨
  • All 12 Huskies scored tonight. EVERYBODY EATS!!!
  • Bring on the Hawkeyes!!!

So this is supposedly the 2nd best team in the Big East (per the preseason coaches poll)? Yikes. 😱

I have to say that not only did the team defense look great, but literally every one who played looked really good to solid. It was nice to see. Spurts where they looked really good.
  • Sarah had a nice scoring night, but a career high in TO's... I bet that's what she remembers from this game.
  • It was nice to see Williams go off.
  • Azzi is just so smooth, but I would have liked to have seen more scoring.
  • Blanca continues to shine. One of the best freshmen in the nation.
I thought Kelis looked terrific. Not sure why she doesn't get more PT. She's gonna be really good. LIterally everyone scored. BUT when we had all our subs in, their starters squashed us. I don't ever want to hear this season "where would our bench be ranked if they were their own team"? The answer is nowhere in the top 50.

Having said that, a great game overall. Too many turnovers, some disjointed offense, and coach mentioned that at the post game interview.

Yeah, I expected more from Marquette. They didn’t even show up until the 4th quarter. The article on their website tomorrow will focus on how they outscored UConn in the 4th quarter…..

Love Blanca! She’s so good. Great game by Kayleigh Heckel too.

Bring on the Hawkeyes!

-I don’t think Marquette will end up being the second best team in the big east. I like Villanova and seton hall more.

-Missed too many layups. Serah Williams had some incredible finishes. But she still misses easy ones. And still bobbles the ball at times.

-Sarah Strong was really sloppy with the ball in the first half. Probably still sick would be my guess.

-Caroline ran to the locker room and K9 had to come back into the game. What happened? Did she get hit in the head? Or maybe she just needed to go to the bathroom.

-The 4th quarter was rough. No one made an argument for additional minutes.

-Geno basically gave us permission to nitpick… so, I guess I am doing that?

-I was kind of disappointed with the crowd size. I guess Louisville had a lot of empty seats tonight too.

I don't know who knows it, but Uconn is on a 28 game win streak. When Uconn wins out and we have NO.13, it will be a 56 game win streak and the making of another fantastic win streak.!!!! This game was typical Uconn and the WHOLE team is to be congratulated on a Uconn team effort. We are putting all the pieces together to finish the GOAL, NC NO.13.GO HUSKIES

I'm going to nitpick for the sake of having something to nitpick. 60% FT shooting isn't great.

That said, UConn had a fine game. One stat I particularly liked was Blanca being our #3 scorer and Serah being right behind her. They're moving on up! 😎

I had mentioned in the chat the new NBCSPORTS CHANNEL was not carried by DIRECTV well apparently now it is channel 619.

Marquette was down 73-29 at the end of the 3rd period…that’s a blowout. UConn put on a clinic tonight despite more turnovers than usual, especially with 6 by Sarah in the first half. It was surprising that Marquette played their starters until only 2:13 remained in the game but it did allow them to put up 24 points in the 4th period.

I think finals are over for a lot of the students? My guess is a bunch of the kids had headed home for the holidays.

Tonight Marquette proved that they are, indeed, better than UCONN'S 6th through 12th players in the 4th quarter...
As others have mentioned, Serah looked really aggressive and sharp tonight, Sarah was a Tale of Two Cities tonight (brilliant shooting and puzzlingly bad with turnovers), Azzi with a terrific start to the game, Blanca was electric as usual (her major problem with turnovers is that her passing is so quick and crisp that she sometimes surprises teammates), KK and Kayleigh were efficient in assists to turnovers and Allie and Kelis were effective within the team concept.
I'm confident they'll clean up the turnovers and be more efficient at the free throw line against Iowa on Saturday.

Always good assessments. Two added thoughts:
-One word why Kellis doesn't play more: Defense. While her defense is not bad, not anyway near as good as other Huskies.
-I sometimes have to laugh at the comments, "why don't our subs at the end of the game play better?" Have noticed that many teams, Marquette in this case, play their starters until the final 1-2 minutes. Geno has the entire bench in the game, in many cases starting the 4th quarter. The skill is there but unlikely they ever get the opportunity to play together unless these blow outs. Geno is also not one to run up the score. Would it matter if we won by 50?

Two big takeaways for me were the continuing intensity of the defense and the continued improvement in the post game with Serah and Jana. Also, Geno was right on point as usual after the game. All the teams will be improving as we move forward and you have to also. Whatever weaknesses or problematic tendencies you perceive during the lead up to March, you work to eliminate them. as you go forward.

I could not disagree more with the look ahead analysis to the Iowa game in the post game TV show. The key is for UCONN to slow it down because Iowa likes to play fast? Actually it's the opposite.

It’s a cold Wednesday night here in CT, students have finals and they did sell 12,348 tickets so….

A lot of our turnovers come from over passing in the lane. The player receiving the passes assume the player will shoot and are not ready. Turnover.
Our back-ups need to get better on defense. Really not switching very fast.
Serah is better on defense than Jana, but I think Jana is a better rebounder. Offensively they are really close.
