Marquette Postgame Thread

I can think of a lot of reasons. . .

Available minutes.

Possibly a muscle soreness/sprain.

She’s only been playing 6-7 years?

This is also my concern. I've watched the tournament games many times. Paige was amazing in how many little things she did to contribute to winning. She's a Mt. Rushmore face for sure.
Well for a couple more years anyway.

Wondering why Gandy hasn’t gotten any playing time the last couple games?
Plan to redshirt ??
Interesting thought.

Gandy has played four minutes in two games, so she's already burned a playing season and hence can't do a "season-sit-out" redshirt.

If, on the other hand, she incurred an illness or injury since those first two games that incapacitates her for the entire season, she may be eligible for a medical hardship waiver to get an extra year of eligibility, which is sometimes colloquially called a "medical redshirt."

Marquette was down 73-29 at the end of the 3rd period…that’s a blowout. UConn put on a clinic tonight despite more turnovers than usual, especially with 6 by Sarah in the first half. It was surprising that Marquette played their starters until only 2:13 remained in the game but it did allow them to put up 24 points in the 4th period.
Consuegra apparently decided to keep the starters in the 4th to allow the Musketeers to at least make up some of the lopsided deficit and have a little face-saving after being completely dominated on both ends of the floor for 3Q's.

With the additions of Blanca,k9 and Williams to go along with SS and Azzi they have a better team than last years..Remember it was really close who was going to get MOP of the finals between SS and Azzi and they are both back playing even better this year

If you didn’t watch the game on television yet, it was stated that Marquette is the only D1 team where every player from last years team came back. That says a few things: Cohesiveness, I love my coach, I love my teammates and the staff and culture. In addition, they have a bunch of seniors. USC, on the other hand, lost a lot of veteran leadership/ ballers to graduation, injury and transfer. The team is being led by a freshman not named JuJu. That’s not an easy task.
There certainly appears to be a few lessons to learn from this for other schools who have seen their ranks decimated by portal transfers out. (BC lost 11 players in a single surge. Notre Dame is another that lost core players in the portal.) Would the culture instilled at Marquette have prevented the losses - maybe, maybe not. Still it is refreshing to see. In any event, Consuegra would be a good person to have speak to young coaches about what makes the Marquette WBB program unique in today's portal transfer world. Have to wish her best of luck in instilling and keeping those principles alive for years to come.

.-.
Remember in the game prior to Marquette, Sarah was dealing with some type of bug?

I was wondering if she was still not at 100% and that might have contributed to her turnovers and the couple of times she seemingly stumbled out of control. And perhaps that she passed it on to Caroline.

Regarding the broadcast team on Peacock, I thought they did a comparatively good job letting the audience know who was being subbed in and out. Not 100% of the time but better than most tv crews.

IIRC one can redshirt by not playing in more than 30% of the teams scheduled games, not including scrimmages and exhibitions. There may be a new calendar year thingy threshold to not cross.

Do the good folks who say that Blanca provides a spark off the bench realize that a spark is the most minuscule possible pyrotechnic event.

Blanca, more accurately, provides a . . .

. . . off the bench.

In this game, she made three or four Magic Johnson passes only to end up with zero assists because her teammates bungled the ball or missed the shot.

Serah had 5 turnovers in the Ohio St game and people were freaking out, in the 7 games tht followed she's only had a total of 8. Seems like the more she's on the court the more the game slows down for her. Geno has found another potential diamond in the rough.

Didn't see the game as I don't have Peacock and don't want to go down the rabbit hole of free seven day offers, etc. So my comments are based on the box score. Anyway, looks like it was an "everybody eats" game and that's not too shabby.
Check with your cable or streaming provider. Peacock is nbc
NBC recently relaunched NBCSPORTS channel
Youtubetv carries the new channel
DIRECTV though not carrying the channel yet carries the games on ch 619 which they callNBCS1
Those are all the providers I have so check with yours they may be carrying it

[whispers] get it. It's a good quality broadcast, with our old friend Meg, doing color, and there are enough games to justify the cost, especially if you are also a fan of the men's program..
Channel 1211 NBCSN on Xfinity has carried games when on Peacock. I also was able to tape it.

Earlier this week I wondered if Allie had one of her upper arms taped due to a tattoo. Others here believed it was for an arm/shoulder issue. In watching the replay, she was not wearing the tape, so....another time where ol Centerstream was wrong. Hmm.

She did have a fairly large band aid on that upper arm. The patch could be covering a tat.👍

A few thoughts:

  • Bigs passing has improved greatly
  • Blanca continues to amaze with her passing as she's playing chess and her teammates are playing checkers. Her shooting is somewhat of a headscratcher at times. Way off some shots and pure on others. Perhaps it's her release motion as it looks a bit more of flicked motion as opposed to a shooters follow through
  • KK and Azzi played great. Sarah was great, but a bit too many turnovers. Our standards are high for this gal.
  • Serah and Jana do a lot of positives out there and Serah has definitely improved her aggressiveness both on the offensive end and the defensive end and rebounding
  • Serah and Jana missed some WIDE OPEN layups, real headscratcher.
  • Shade was solid, K9 was super solid-- really liked her one fade away jumper
  • Allie is craftier than I suspected and improving on defense.
  • Kelis is showing some nice minutes. Really like her offensive skillset and hope to see her defensive improvement this year since she has the potential to be a menace on that end.
  • Sorry to see Carol leave the court, although her shot is not falling, she's hustling to the basket and got a couple of nice layups
  • Ayanna is trying hard and you can see her raw talent. Right now we just need her to be a great defender and a rebounder.
  • Excited to watch the matchup with Iowa!!!

Blanca . . .

Yes, but in fairness to the pass recipient, in many of those cases Blanca did gently (but quickly) place the ball directly into their hands when they were wide open and a couple feet from the basket 😳😕

Moriah Jefferson used to have the same challenges - even when the recipient was Stewie on occasion 😯 😱

Musketeers? Thinking Xavier? Golden Eagles.
