Marquette Postgame Thread

Tonight Marquette proved that they are, indeed, better than UCONN'S 6th through 12th players in the 4th quarter...
As others have mentioned, Serah looked really aggressive and sharp tonight, Sarah was a Tale of Two Cities tonight (brilliant shooting and puzzlingly bad with turnovers), Azzi with a terrific start to the game, Blanca was electric as usual (her major problem with turnovers is that her passing is so quick and crisp that she sometimes surprises teammates), KK and Kayleigh were efficient in assists to turnovers and Allie and Kelis were effective within the team concept.
I'm confident they'll clean up the turnovers and be more efficient at the free throw line against Iowa on Saturday.
I suppose your first sentence is correct but I doubt it would be if they had gone through training camp with Geno as the first team. I think Allie showed some really good moves around the basket. Unfortunately, she hasn’t had any opportunities from three over the last couple of games. I feel good about her for next year.

so really think comparing players who have been out playing together for over 30 minutes vs. players who have been sitting watching for 90 minutes and playing the last 5 minutes is fair? OK.
I took the comments as a note of sarcasm…playing starters consisting of grad students and seniors when the game was over seemed like an odd coaching decision. It should have been used as an opportunity to give the normal bench players some valuable playing time against a strong UConn bench.

Do the good folks who say that Blanca provides a spark off the bench realize that a spark is the most minuscule possible pyrotechnic event.

Blanca, more accurately, provides a . . .

. . . off the bench.

In this game, she made three or four Magic Johnson passes only to end up with zero assists because her teammates bungled the ball or missed the shot.

I was at the game and although it was not a sellout, it was a pretty enthusiastic crowd by Hartford standards, especially given the lack of students in attendance.

I was surprised at how lethargic Marquette played. I know that UConn had much to do with it but unlike Marquette teams of the past, they looked very mediocre and had very little fight in them. I hope that some of the other Big East teams compete harder against UConn than what I saw tonight.

Serah is getting a little better game by game. And Blanca just continues to amaze. We know what we have with Sarah and Azzi. The key to this team is whether Serah and Blanca can continue to make strides as UConn marches towards April.

The full court pressure came in different variations tonight and was suffocating. I feel good about this team as they go to Brooklyn to face Iowa. Given that it is only December, this team is in a very good place. They are best when on defense and in the open court. The half court offense is good but that is where there is most room for improvement.

Liked the nonstarter getting minutes. Personally would have liked to have seen a couple starters in Q4 and nonstarters enter a little earlier.

Apparently coach wants them to figure it out.
Personally, I'm fine with the deep bench dominating 4th quarter minutes, but I look forward to selectively seeing players like Kelis getting early minutes with starters to give them a chance to mesh.

As I listen to Geno's continuous comments about how hard it is to get the bench players enough minutes, it is starting to make me think that he might be trying to send messages to certain players. I believe that we have 8 core players right now (and yes I know some posters have favorites who are not in that core) but why does he keep talking about how there are not enough minutes to get everyone in the game for as long as they want? We have 8 core, the starters and Blanca, K9 and Jana. If all 15 players were healthy then I believe ICE and Morgan would increase that core group to 10. From that group we only lose 2-SW and Azzi and in theory they have already been replaced by our 2 recruits. OV and JP. Out of the none-core we lose 1 player-CD. leaving 4---AP, Gandy, Kelis Fisher and AZ. Is he sending subtle messages to SOME of that group that they need to make real progress to get more minutes in the future ? (absent injuries)

If not, then he is merely stating the obvious that we all knew before the season started. There are not enough minutes in the game to satisfy 15 players

I know they aren’t the best players on the team. But Allie and K9 are the two players I look forward to watching. I always perk up when I see them at the scorer’s table.
I am right there with you in paying more attention to their play more than others. I think their integrating further into the team is a key to how to this season goes come April.

But there are a lot of conflicting thoughts going on watching them. They are such contrasting players. K9 all about her quickness and Allie is (to be kind) not all that quick so the suffocating Blanca/K9 backcourt tandem has a weak point.

However, I think Allie brings out the best in K9 on the offensive end. And it works the other way as well. They are a nice tandem (and I think Blanca is a better passer with the two of them on the floor as well).

It is great to see them both growing in confidence, though. I expect good things from them as the season progresses.

I don’t agree that Jana is a better rebounder than Serah. Jana may touch more rebounds, but Serah actually controls more. I’m hopeful that Jana will develop Dolson hands!
actually Jana is better than Serah on the offensive end and they are about the same on the defensive end; at least judging ny the share of rebounds they get when thry are in the game. Jana gets 26% of the offensive rebound opportunities while Serah gets 14%. For defensive rebounds Jana gets 14% and Serah 16%.

I agree with you that Jana is a better defensive rebounder than Serah but if we're going to look at advanced stats then Serah overall is a much better defender. And looking at the passing stats Serah's advanced stats are much better than Jana's. It's better to have the better passer on Offense so you can get the ball to the much better efficient shooters/scorers.

well, i actually said Jana is better at offensive rebounds. I agree that Serah is a better player on both offense and defense and it shows up in the stats across nearly all categories. For example twice the assist rates and nore steals and blocks.

I think we are a lot better on defense with Serah on the floor. I like Jana; I do. But I know you have seen her struggle to get out to three point shooters. If the opponent is playing a stretch 5; we are in trouble with Jana on the court.

Jana works best with opponents that play traditional bigs. She can bang with them. She can rebound with them. She gets to use 5 fouls. And probably some of our other key personnel are not in foul trouble as a result.

If I am going to debate swapping Serah out. It would be for Blanca. (Who seems to be her backup anyway. Blanca comes in after about 5 minutes. And she always spells Serah.)

I referred to this earlier. I completely agree that the oft repeated contention that our bench would be a top ten team is fantasy. However, I also think some go too far in the other direction after a game like tonight when it was a bit chaotic out there. Obviously, they would not (right away) be a highly ranked team but I do believe that if our bench, Jana, Ice, Gandy, Blanca, Morgan, Allie, Kayleigh, Kelis, Caroline, and Ayanna came into training camp/preseason practice as the team, we would likely be ranked at some point in the season.

All these players were/are highly ranked, talented players whose natural talent was enough to attract the eye of two of the best recruiters in the game! I’m pretty confident very few people would want to see even that team in their bracket in March/April, and the following year we would be back among the best teams in the country. Perhaps this too, is pie in the sky, but given those players and our staff, I don’t think so.

Allie is also a core player. Jana is ninth.

I don't know who knows it, but Uconn is on a 28 game win streak. When Uconn wins out and we have NO.13, it will be a 56 game win streak and the making of another fantastic win streak.!!!! This game was typical Uconn and the WHOLE team is to be congratulated on a Uconn team effort. We are putting all the pieces together to finish the GOAL, NC NO.13.GO HUSKIES
Now you’ve done it. We’re DOOMED. Tell me. How many no hitters and perfect games have you broken up?

I agree. Allie is number 8. We need to be up 25 for Jana to come in. That’s been the pattern so far this season.

I also agree that the players on the bench might look better if they were getting first team reps in practice. There are probably times they are standing around on the sidelines watching the starters play against male practice players.

Did anyone notice that Caroline was taken out of the game on a quick coaches time out, replaced by K9 with about 57 seconds left. It looked like Jamelle took her back to the locker room. I’m wondering if anyone has any further info on this. Praying she’s okay.
In her postgame appearance when Daly was asked about CD2 was quick to say that Caroline was fine but gave no details.

We seem to give up between 10-20 points per game on bunnies. This won’t matter much in league games but could be a bigger issue against good teams.

-I don’t think Marquette will end up being the second best team in the big east. I like Villanova and seton hall more.

-Missed too many layups. Serah Williams had some incredible finishes. But she still misses easy ones. And still bobbles the ball at times.

-Sarah Strong was really sloppy with the ball in the first half. Probably still sick would be my guess.

-Caroline ran to the locker room and K9 had to come back into the game. What happened? Did she get hit in the head? Or maybe she just needed to go to the bathroom.

-The 4th quarter was rough. No one made an argument for additional minutes.

-Geno basically gave us permission to nitpick… so, I guess I am doing that?

-I was kind of disappointed with the crowd size. I guess Louisville had a lot of empty seats tonight too.
Serah did miss a lot of chippies tonight and she does that a lot. So does Jana when she gets the ball near the basket and they blow the layup.
Geno said in the post game that Caroline took herself out. Maybe she was having something going on with her conditioning.
I would like to see the bench players focus in a little more and lock in on some defense. They always seem to get outscored in the 4th qtr. These are still 5 star players getting in, so instead of just being happy to get some PT focus on what you're good at. That will get you more PT and move up the depth roster.
I know Gandy was a project but if you can put in Ayanna you can most def play Gandy since they are very similiar in capabilities. To play only 2 minutes thus far in more than 8 blowout games is kind of crazy.

Wondering why Gandy hasn’t gotten any playing time the last couple games?

The answer seems obvious: there are higher priorities, namely getting more minutes for Blanca, as well as Carol and Ayanna. And when Morgan comes back, she will likely also be a higher priority. There are only so many minutes and Geno has to get a deeper rotation up to speed over the next few months. The choices he makes about allocating precious playing time also undoubtedly reflect what happens in practice. I’d guess that Gandy has yet to make it impossible for Geno not to play her.

.-.
The word was that Caroline was nauseous and close to vomiting, which is why she made a beeline back to the locker room. Hopefully it's just the bug going around the team. I keep thinking of KLS vomiting into a pail on the sideline a few years back.

Some postgame thoughts on the Marquette game.
  • Marquette is one of the top teams in the BE. Some may conclude that UConn’s 36 pt victory demonstrates how weak the conference is. IMO, like almost all the wins over P4 teams, it actually shows just how strong this UConn team is.
  • Marquette had their entire roster return this season and they shoot a collective 40% from the arc. They also average a rather high 15+ turnovers a game. Tonight, the Huskies held the Golden Eagles to 5/16 (31%) from the arc while forcing 15 Golden Eagle turnovers in the 1st half and 21 for the game
  • I like what I’m seeing from Serah who is really settling into her role as she becomes more and more comfortable with her teammates and the UConn system. Specifically, her cuts are sharper and her passing from the high post is excellent.
  • Yes, there were some head scratching turnovers by the Huskies in the 1st half. Sarah had been 7th in the nation with a 3.77 A/TO ratio. Tonight she had 6 turnovers and only 2 assists. 🤯
  • Blanca continues to be UConn’s X-FACTOR with her quickness and athleticism, making plays at both ends of the court.
  • Back in the dark ages I used to play Rugby. The play at halfcourt where 3 Huskies and 2 Golden Eagles were trying to wrestle the ball from each other was the closest thing to a “rugby ruck” that I have ever seen on a basketball court. 🫨
  • All 12 Huskies scored tonight. EVERYBODY EATS!!!
  • Bring on the Hawkeyes!!!
Nice Rugby comments, I thought the same thing seeing the action, some real head banging going on.

Wondering why Gandy hasn’t gotten any playing time the last couple games?
I can think of a lot of reasons. . .

Available minutes.

Possibly a muscle soreness/sprain.

She’s only been playing 6-7 years?

Everyone says the bigs always take longer for them to develop and she has accepted the challenge of playing in perhaps the most demanding program in the country.

Some people are wandering why it’s taking Serah so long to adjust to UConn’s pace and style of play and she’s a well developed Senior who some are thinking that her lower body and core strength may not be as strong as it should/could be.

Maybe, she doesn’t feel ready. I remember a video where Freshman Gabby said she was trying not to be seen when coach was looking down the bench because she wasn’t ready.

personally, I’ll be happy if she starts getting minutes when she’s a junior.

At the game last night and one of the many things that really impressed me was the "quick feet" of the fantastic five plus Blanca and K9 on defense. They are absolutely relentless, and seem to never tire. After a steal/turnover they then go full tilt to the basket. The pace of their game is really a site. This team is exceptional, one of the best I've seen in the past 3 decades!
