Malachi Smith on official visit today

Was Mahaney a bad fit, or did we put him a role that wasn’t a good fit? I think the later.

Kinda both, but more the former.

I think it was mostly just a recruiting miss. The staff did a very good job bringing in portal guys who could fill multiple roles in past years - Joey C and Cam could come in, play on the ball, off the ball and at least fit into the defense. And Joey was a plus basketball IQ and Cam was plus-plus.

Mahaney just wasn’t that versatile and defensively, he just made a bad situation worse.

Great kid, good player, wrong spot.

If we hadn't also missed on Nowell then the Mahaney miss would've been a semi-hit. But b/c Nowell wasn't ready, we needed Mahaney to be able to bend the opposing defense with the ball in his hands (which is something we never asked of Joey and rarely asked of Cam).

He really, really couldn't do that. Diarra was the only guy on the roster who could.

Luckily Hurley has realized this and is addressing it in the portal x2. And hopefully Adams will be ready in a way that Nowell wasn't.

Add in some progression from Ball (though I think the folks projecting him as a part-time PG are nuts) and some playmaking from Furphy, and I suspect our offense will be much more dynamic next year.

I was always a Diarra should start at PG guy from game 1. Having said that, we should have used Mahaney as a spot up shooter and secondary ball handler. The two untold stories this season (due to their offensive disappointments) was how much Karaban and Mahaney’s defense improved. True, their defensive ceiling was below Newton/Castle. And Mahaney wasn’t really “switchable”onto a 6-6 swing man or a quick PG. Yet, when we played him we too often failed to make that defensive scheme adjustment.

I still think in the right frame of mind and system for Mahaney his shooting % is a lot better than we saw for much of the season. His mechanics and form pass the eye test.

I wish him well next season.

So was Mahaney Hurley’s first choice or the product of a late start fully portalling because of the NC. I don’t recall.

It’s gone very quiet suddenly. Trilly mentioned he’s told wake folks he’s gonna commit going back to their visit. So who knows.

To add, should he commit, Smith could also play some PG alongside Demary at the 2.

Getting giddy!!!
Or Silas can play as the 3rd G alongside both smith and Ball since silas can guard wings. I think smith will be BE sixth man of the year if this is our roster but these portal adds must be making it really tempting for Alex to return

The nice thing if we get both is that both grade very high on catch and shoot spot ups. We can easily play them both together, and we can have a free flowing offense that worked so well when we had three passers at the 1-2-3 (Solo will never be a point guard but improved a lot as a passer later in the year). Mullins encouraged me a bit too with his willingness to pass in an all star game when he wasn’t getting the ball.

I like the flexibility of being able to take Demary off the ball on days he’s got his shot going and let him get some Hawkins/Solo plays run for him.

Huh? Say what? Maybe his nose was a little itchy (or runny). What a load of BS, attaching any significance to it. I hope he decides on UConn, sounds like he'd be a great to the program, but this ain't Robert Redford in the Sting.
