I hope they decide to have Lou stay behind and rest. There is nothing to gain by having her travel and play. She won’t like it and the game will be ugly on Monday without her. But this is the perfect opportunity for Megan and Squeaks to step up. We need them to be consistent during this month, if we have any chance at a championship

To illustrate the power of intelligent advertising:

I have never had back problems in my life or made any inquiries about them online. That is, until I read this thread. Then I saw the following at the bottom of this very page in my browser:

I think Lou and Geno need to know about this right away.

The depth of Lou's injury cannot be really determined unless she has an MRI. If everything in her spine is in the correct place, then the injury is muscular. If something is askew, the MRI would point it out ie. the herniated disc or whatever. If it indeed muscular, then anti inflammatories and hot water baths would help.

After making 38 jumps out of perfectly good airplanes, with several lumbar operations, and two hip replacements, this stuff is not good even for a 22 year old. I wish her good health and hope that it is indeed a bruised muscle.

IIRC Emeka Okafor had back spasms during the 2004 championship run. They started before the tournament and bothered him throughout. I think the time frame to recovery is difficult to determine and whether they will recur pretty unpredictable. Now if Lou’s results are the same as Emeka’s we will all be happy.

Well hopefully the fact that is already in top condition, her young age and has a world class medical support system will keep it to a minimum. That's the thing about reading about medical conditions. The eyes tend to stray to the worst case scenarios.
I for one am glad that the interwebs invented websites like WebMD and Wikipedia.

The medical staff wouldn’t have allowed Lou to attempt to play in the second half if she’d had a herniated disc

Man can this crowd see any more doom and gloom? Honestly, I’ve never seen so many pessimists in my life

That's the Boneyard way now. Think of the worst possible scenario first.........

In respect to chiropractors-- They cover a broad spectrum of types. If you get a good one they can do amazing things, but if you end up with a bad one--- well you can come out worse than when you walked in. There are just as many bad MD's but they cover their incompetence with medications. Although I have never tried it , many people I trust have had good results with acupuncture.

I recently had a bad fall and injured my right back hand side ribs pretty badly. Nothing cracked, just a trauma situation for my lower right side back. It was extremely painful for 2 weeks, had to a sleep in a chair and god forbit I had to cough or sneeze. Treatment is muscle relaxers and pain killers, and heat. But doc, who is excellent, said 4 - 8 weeks for recovery (it's been like 4). I don't think Lou suffered a trama like I did, but who knows with freak situations. At her age and with UConn trainers maybe its 1-2 weeks. So she misses a couple games. Pencil her in at 90% on 3/17.

Those that think she will play in a few days are crazy, and if the staff play her they are even worse.

Injured and forced to miss the national championship game, injured and forced to miss her "homecoming" game at UCLA and now injured on Senior Day. My heart aches for Lou, a great kid who deserves a better shake from Lady Luck.

Of course. Two things are certain after a UConn player suffers an injury: First, we'll read drive-by diagnoses from the Boneyard medical experts; and second, posters will tell us about their experiences with a similar injury.
Well, as long as you asked....;)

I will tell you that back spasms definitely get and keep you attention. They can be incredibly painful. Very impressive that Lou tried to get back in the game in spite of that.

Read up on back spasms. A minor one takes a few days to heal... A more severe one can take up to 4-6 weeks to heal and the most serious can take up to 10 weeks to heal. So depending on the injury it could seriously affect our chances in the tournament. Let’s all pray it’s just a minor strain/ spasm and she will be able to go on a few days of rest. Back injuries are never good especially playing a contact sport and a lot of movement and motion. It needs a lot of rest. Feel horrible for Lou and especially on senior day. My heart aches for her. Get well soon Lou!!!
I see no risk reward scenario that says play her Monday.

She was walking straight, and if she was in pain, it wasn’t bad enough that she couldn’t hide it.

BUT

Don’t even put her on the plane.

You can’t win a NC without her.

No if then here —- just keep her home — this game means nothing in the big picture

I think the big divide is whether it's just a spasm, or whether it's a disk herniation. If it's the former, she'll be fine; if it's the latter, it's a career-influencing injury.

Now I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night, but recovery from a lumbar strain or even sprain for a young woman should not take too long. Years ago I had self-diagnosed sciatica (pain radiating down the outside of one leg) from lifting. I stopped lifting, did bed rest for a few days over a weekend and got over it. I have thought that the more you mess with something, the worse it can get.

My wife has back trouble from a work injury nearly 10 years ago. It was a herniated disc by MRI and she was in chronic pain for nearly 6 years despite traction and epidural injections which apparently eventually worked. Two of three neurosurgeons told her it was not bad enough to do surgery. One physiatrist (physical medicine and rehabilitation) told us about surgery, "sometimes the best thing to do is to do nothing". As long as she lifts less than 10 lbs and avoids excessive bending she has no pain but then she knows biomechanics and how to leverage things in a shopping cart.

Over the years I have encountered several people who still had pain after surgery. As a medical consultant I used to work with in a State job once told us, "after back surgery, 1/3 get better, 1/3 get worse, and 1/3 stay the same". Anyway, your player should be OK with "conservative Rx".

I have had back spasms forever, they are a nagging pain that comes and goes. Almost anything can bring it on and sometimes they go away within minutes but I have had it go on for months. Hope Lou’s is not chronic because they can be sheer hell.

And to chime in on my own: my one comment is that back issues are HIGHLY idiosyncratic.
Message: there's a good chance your particular back experience is not relevant here.

I don’t agree with you. In fact, there is a formula to determine how long Lou will be out. If you take the average amount of time those on the BY were down due to back spasms and multiply that by Lou’s age divided by the average age of BYers with back spasms you get how long Lou will be out. I did the math and the answer is Lou will probably miss Monday’s game and be fine for the rest of the season.

Ha! I had to stare at it for a minute to find it. We tend to have scotomas for our own misteakes...misstakes....errors.

To those who suggest that Lou might remain in Storrs on Monday to rest and rehab her injured back, I would remind you that his is the same person who played with a broken foot, a black eye and a barf bucket at the end of the bench.

In person, it looked like she was not in great pain until she tried to move fast. I can relate! Too bad she didnt get a chance to take a shot as her warmup before the second half was really on target. I think she could have shot but couldnt play defense.
It will be interesting to hear what they do for her to try to get those insulted muscles to calm down. I suspect she will be at least stiff this morning. How she responds to treatment today will tell a lot about her time frame for returning to play.
Since they fly charter, she might get to travel with the team as an inspirational leader as long as whatever therapies they are using are portable. I would be very surprised to see her play Monday.

No, I'm not a doctor. But I have suffered a herniated disc, and undergone surgery for that injury. One cannot know if an injury is a herniated disc without an MRI. And at first it's not clear whether an injury is a herniation or just a strain. That's what the doctors told me.

So not exactly as if I'm making this stuff up. Years of dealing with that injury and the specialists kind of makes on sensitive to that.
