In respect to chiropractors-- They cover a broad spectrum of types. If you get a good one they can do amazing things, but if you end up with a bad one--- well you can come out worse than when you walked in. There are just as many bad MD's but they cover their incompetence with medications. Although I have never tried it , many people I trust have had good results with acupuncture.
 
I recently had a bad fall and injured my right back hand side ribs pretty badly. Nothing cracked, just a trauma situation for my lower right side back. It was extremely painful for 2 weeks, had to a sleep in a chair and god forbit I had to cough or sneeze. Treatment is muscle relaxers and pain killers, and heat. But doc, who is excellent, said 4 - 8 weeks for recovery (it's been like 4). I don't think Lou suffered a trama like I did, but who knows with freak situations. At her age and with UConn trainers maybe its 1-2 weeks. So she misses a couple games. Pencil her in at 90% on 3/17.

Those that think she will play in a few days are crazy, and if the staff play her they are even worse.
 
Injured and forced to miss the national championship game, injured and forced to miss her "homecoming" game at UCLA and now injured on Senior Day. My heart aches for Lou, a great kid who deserves a better shake from Lady Luck.

Well, as long as you asked....;)

I will tell you that back spasms definitely get and keep you attention. They can be incredibly painful. Very impressive that Lou tried to get back in the game in spite of that.

I see no risk reward scenario that says play her Monday.

She was walking straight, and if she was in pain, it wasn’t bad enough that she couldn’t hide it.

BUT

Don’t even put her on the plane.

You can’t win a NC without her.

No if then here —- just keep her home — this game means nothing in the big picture

Now I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night, but recovery from a lumbar strain or even sprain for a young woman should not take too long. Years ago I had self-diagnosed sciatica (pain radiating down the outside of one leg) from lifting. I stopped lifting, did bed rest for a few days over a weekend and got over it. I have thought that the more you mess with something, the worse it can get.

My wife has back trouble from a work injury nearly 10 years ago. It was a herniated disc by MRI and she was in chronic pain for nearly 6 years despite traction and epidural injections which apparently eventually worked. Two of three neurosurgeons told her it was not bad enough to do surgery. One physiatrist (physical medicine and rehabilitation) told us about surgery, "sometimes the best thing to do is to do nothing". As long as she lifts less than 10 lbs and avoids excessive bending she has no pain but then she knows biomechanics and how to leverage things in a shopping cart.

Over the years I have encountered several people who still had pain after surgery. As a medical consultant I used to work with in a State job once told us, "after back surgery, 1/3 get better, 1/3 get worse, and 1/3 stay the same". Anyway, your player should be OK with "conservative Rx".

I have had back spasms forever, they are a nagging pain that comes and goes. Almost anything can bring it on and sometimes they go away within minutes but I have had it go on for months. Hope Lou’s is not chronic because they can be sheer hell.

I don’t agree with you. In fact, there is a formula to determine how long Lou will be out. If you take the average amount of time those on the BY were down due to back spasms and multiply that by Lou’s age divided by the average age of BYers with back spasms you get how long Lou will be out. I did the math and the answer is Lou will probably miss Monday’s game and be fine for the rest of the season.

Ha! I had to stare at it for a minute to find it. We tend to have scotomas for our own misteakes...misstakes....errors.
 
To those who suggest that Lou might remain in Storrs on Monday to rest and rehab her injured back, I would remind you that his is the same person who played with a broken foot, a black eye and a barf bucket at the end of the bench.
 
In person, it looked like she was not in great pain until she tried to move fast. I can relate! Too bad she didnt get a chance to take a shot as her warmup before the second half was really on target. I think she could have shot but couldnt play defense.
It will be interesting to hear what they do for her to try to get those insulted muscles to calm down. I suspect she will be at least stiff this morning. How she responds to treatment today will tell a lot about her time frame for returning to play.
Since they fly charter, she might get to travel with the team as an inspirational leader as long as whatever therapies they are using are portable. I would be very surprised to see her play Monday.

No, I'm not a doctor. But I have suffered a herniated disc, and undergone surgery for that injury. One cannot know if an injury is a herniated disc without an MRI. And at first it's not clear whether an injury is a herniation or just a strain. That's what the doctors told me.

So not exactly as if I'm making this stuff up. Years of dealing with that injury and the specialists kind of makes on sensitive to that.

OLD ALUM: Like the idea of the inspirational presence. but the way teams are focused on beating up on Katie Lou, they'll probably be waiting for her as she comes off the plane. Wish I was MOSTLY joking instead of just partly .

Seriously, if there was no chance of her playing, I doubt they would send her down. Anyhow, good news one way or the other.

She came out a little late for the second half but then proceeded to drain shot after shot in warmups. Yay! But, she was obviously in discomfort running the court and trying to defend, looked like she was going 60-70%. Her comments after the game were somewhat reassuring. So, whether she plays tomorrow or not, I think we dodged a bullet. Unfortunately, a lot of teams have not.

Now take Kobe`s advice and stop diving for loose balls!

Judging from her body language during her post game interview with Justine, she did not appear to be in distress. I’m with you OD, I think she’ll answer the bell tomorrow night. It will hinge on her ability to endure a plane ride down to south Florida. Her desire to play and be out there with her teammates, coupled with the advancement of modern medicine may be enough to trump the odds of not playing.

The back story on the back. It wasn't up to what Lou wanted:

"We'll see how she responds to it tomorrow," Auriemma said. "If she's good to go and can sit on the plane for a couple of hours, then she'll come. And if they tell me she can't, then she won't. So we'll know tomorrow."

UConn's Katie Lou Samuelson talks about injury that forced her from Saturday's game

"They" thought she was good to go. She'll be evaluated in Florida just as she was today before they got on the plane.
