There's a positive flipside here that's being unsaid but I don't really have any reason to put much stock in it, particularly given what's being reported about the mood in Storrs (if Fanta is to be believed). (i.e. they all know he's not going - but again I've seen nothing to indicate that that's the case.)
On SC he’s insinuating that they’re optimistic he returns in the building. But no one knows for sure

I’ve got to think that the Lakers and/or other NBA franchises were thinking about Hurley a lot sooner than yesterday morning. It’s been two months since the 2nd national championship. The Lakers season was over almost a month and a half ago. I know the news dropped yesterday, but I assume Hurley has known about this far longer than when the media breaks it. If that’s the case, why not let Karaban know your intentions sooner? Or why get Liam and Aidan to commit if you know you are gone? I get that you still have a job to do as current HC at UConn but you’re not going to sell these guys on a championship if you don’t plan to be around. Either he had absolutely no idea an NBA franchise would come calling (which seems unlikely) or he is truly using this for leverage and a tactic that yes he is the best coach in the county, pro or college, and UConn better make that known in his new contract.
Guys, Mahaney & Liam both committed while Darvin Ham was the coach of the Lakers, like what are we even doing here? Have conversations been going on for more than a few days? Probably. But often times, these things move fast. We don’t really know the exact timeline & it’s entirely possible that Hurley didn’t seriously consider this until a few days ago. We’re all going to be upset if he leaves but the guy built a powerhouse here at UConn. Some around here acting like he’s the devil if he decides to pursue a lifelong dream of being an NBA coach.

Karaban being on the roster is the only thing giving me hope that he returns for one more season.
Hurley or Karaban? Lol

If you mean Hurley, that’s an even bigger circus and disaster.

Hurley needs to put out a statement quick about UConn Basketball being his only job or this team will disintegrate faster than you can say Latrell Sprewell.

You’re missing the point. If he only seriously considered it AFTER AK turned down guaranteed NBA money while knowing of the interest before then, that sucks. And he owed AK better timing

I get it but when transfers, recruits come here and you tell your current players in April that you're their coach this upcoming season then you should coach next season and bolt another time.
There's about two or three jobs that exist in Dan's profession where you take the call this late in the game, this is one of them.

That's why I said I don't put much stock in the counterargument (i.e. that they know he's staying).

First of all, somebody send this to Danny. Scal's saying what others have said but he says it really concisely and persuasively. "You can have any job! Don't you want one that comes with good prospects and draft picks?"

Second, lol @ Patrick pointing out that Redick may have cost himself the job by asking Danny to explain his offense on Redick's podcast, which LeBron listened to.

In the last 13 seasons, the Lakers have had 7 head coaches. Even Frank Vogel, who won a (bubble) Championship was escorted out the door a couple seasons later. This job becomes available every 2 years.
The Lakers head coaching job is similar to the Yankees manager job circa 1984. Historic and storied franchise. But the glory years are behind it headed toward a rebuild. They’ll be on top again. But not in the near future.

I’m aware of the point, thanks man. If a report comes out later on that he was strongly considering the job when AK was deciding, that’s one thing. We don’t know that. These things move fast, entirely possible the Lakers weren’t showing real interest and relaying that to his agent until a few days ago.

The report has already come out. Woj said contact started 2 weeks ago

The question is does DH care? Or should he?
The answer is probably and probably. The better question is will it materially impact his decision? The answer is probably not.

Now, Hurley, who led Connecticut to back-to-back national championships, has emerged as a legitimate candidate, if not the favorite,” Buha wrote.

“Team and league sources cautioned that the coaching search remains far from settled. Lakers vice president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka and governor Jeanie Buss will interview Hurley in a more formal manner on Friday, league sources confirmed. There is still a chance the 51-year-old will work out a new contract with Connecticut and remain college basketball’s top coach. Hurley signed a six-year, $32.1 million deal with Connecticut after the 2023 championship season. His buyout to join the NBA would be roughly $1.9 million.

“Redick, considered the front-runner for weeks, remains a viable candidate, according to league sources.”
