Why would the Lakers go along with this ruse? I mean Joe has a podcast, so he must be brilliant. But why would the Lakers temporarily pause on their pursuit of their real coach to help Danny get a better raise

Because they thought they could woo him after he and his agent expressed "interest"

Who was it that reported we hadn't discussed his extension prior to the Lakers interest? I want their head on a pike

I think it was Dana O'Neill that reported he didn't have a new contract on the table

Not totally sure I believe this.

so this played out exactly like how so many media heads predicted it would when the news of Hurley being offered and "the top target" was leaked by Woj

The problem there is the leak of the contract offer. If Hurley wasn't their top target, what would they have done if he accepted the offer?

I do think he was seriously considering the offer from everything that's been reported about it, esp e.g. Karaban saying that Hurley called him and discussed in detail the pro and cons of the decision. It's just that after seriously thinking about it, was obvious that the Lakers situation isn't actually all that good, and it's more of a limerence vs love situation.

But it's also likely true that the Lakers were not actually as serious about giving DH the reins as woj said. It wasn't a total commitment and DH probably felt that from their face to face.

I don't get why JJ would want this job. He's going to get Steve Nash'd if they don't win a championship. It's such a horrible spot for a young coach.

He certainly hasn't earned it, I don't know why the Lakers would want him.

I think there will soon be real smoke about whether LeBron stays or not. Honestly their HC matters less than what LeBron does and probably doesn't impact the West much, which if we are being honest is part of why Hurley is still a Husky.

If you are LeBron, why not go to one of the real West contenders that has a legit shot at the title next year?
1. I'd prefer Golden State for one last title run for both Curry and LeBron - that would make the regular season most entertaining.
2. Basketball or roster-wise MN or OKC might make the most sense

On good news front, Celtics and Joe Mazzula winning the title is a great keep-away for arguably the most attractive (to Hurley) NBA job.

Good riddance. This will likely be a disaster.

Agreed. Makes no sense.
The Lakers are about whatever draws the most eyeballs & press coverage, sometimes that's great players and winning, other times it is overpaying for marquee players that keep the stands full and the press engaged. The Hurley news dropping on eve of finals is the one true conspiracy of the situation. So they'll try to make LeBron stay and be happy via coach selection, Bronny draft etc... because LeBron is still at the top of NBA player popularity.
