Kibitzer Memorial Badass Award

I'm in agreement with those who think K9 was the badass of the game. However, I want to add to the Azzi love by pointing out that one of the ways UConn solved Tennessee's press in the second half was by having Azzi bring the ball up. The girl has handles. Who knew?
A comment on Azzi’s handle. During the U19 FIBA World Championships a few years back, with no obvious PG on the team, HC Cory Close used Azzi as the team’s PG. Azzi lead the US team in assists, handling the PG role beautifully, as the US won the championship. Azzi is much more than a great shooter.

It’s amazing to me that so many people still doubt Azzi or think that there is a better guard in the nation. She played today like what she is: a senior All-American ( that steal at midcourt and subsequent bucket was an even more bad ass version of her her two strips and scores in the national championship game).
Mikayla Blakes of Vanderbilt will be 1st team AA and Azzi will be 2nd team

Blakes is a sophomore, Azzi a senior. Vandy will end season with 5 losses, UConn will be undefeated. Scoring is only one of the metrics used to determine AA status. IMO Azzi is a lock for 1st team, Mikayla could be 1st or 2nd.
Also relevant to the Blakes vs Azzi comparison is that Blakes plays on average 5+ mpg more than Azzi, and so far this season, Blakes has taken 141 more shots than Azzi, while Azzi’s shooting percentage is better than Blakes at every level: from the floor, 3-pt & FT.

She has "husky lungs"? I'm not a doctor or anything (or am I?) but I'd get that left one looked at if it's got the "Derpy Dog" in it.

A comment on Azzi’s handle. During the U19 FIBA World Championships a few years back, with no obvious PG on the team, HC Cory Close used Azzi as the team’s PG.

On the 2018 U17 team coached by Carla Berube, Paige and Azzi both started. I watched all seven games and specifically noted that, most of the time, Carla had Azzi bringing the ball up court with Paige playing off. Once the players got into half court motion, however, Paige and Jordan Horston became the primary assisters.

On the 2017 U16 team also coached by Berube, neither Paige nor Azzi started, but Azzi was third on the team in assists and led the team in steals.

I agree that Kayleigh was the BA. So scrappy, tough and fast. She does so many things that don’t show up in the stats. Sarah and Azzi are the stars, but the defense of K9, KK and Shade makes the whole team bad ass.

I always thought that Kibitzer, of blessed memory, was one of the most insightful posters on our forum, to say nothing of his mastery of the mother tongue. I remember clearly when he came up with the concept of awarding a badass award to accompany each team win. What Kib tried to make clear was that the award was not, in his mind, to necessarily go to the player of the game…rather, the often less-heralded player, often one who came off the bench, who injected the crucial daggers that, over and above the contributions of the stars, carried the team to victory. Obviously, Azzi and Sarah were the stars vs Tennessee, but, in terms of what Kib intended, K9 fills the bill!
