Kibitzer Memorial Badass Award

Q2 was dumb*ss, but the entire second half was not only bad*ass but whip*ss.

Shooting 27 on 11-17, 5-8 with 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals, and playing solid defense, the same player was both the the best shooting guard and best point guard in this game . . .

. . . multi-bad FAFO.
It’s amazing to me that so many people still doubt Azzi or think that there is a better guard in the nation. She played today like what she is: a senior All-American ( that steal at midcourt and subsequent bucket was an even more bad ass version of her her two strips and scores in the national championship game).

.-.
Azzi and Sarah are the co-players of the game. The BadAss has to be K9, she came in the 3rd quarter and played in your face defense then basically sealed the win with two driving layups with less than two and half minutes left in the third to help seal the win.

I honestly can't single out any one player. The first few minutes of the game I'd definitely go with Shade -- She again seemed everywhere, wouldn't let TN get anything done. Azzi and KK definitely had a profound effect on the first quarter. Second quarter when the wheels were coming off, Sarah righted the ship. Third quarter, Kayleigh seemed to right the ship and Azzi put the ball in the hoop a lot. Fourth quarter Serah just seemed to have a knack for getting open.

Everyone who played (I'm not forgetting Jana and Allie) had a hand in puttin' the hurt on the Vols.

Yeah, this is pretty much why I'm not a fan of the "star if the game" mentality. With the way Geno coaches, no one can excel if just one doesn't do their part to perfection...all game long. Obviously there will be a high scorer for the game, but without everyone doing their part, that's not a sure thing. I'm giving the entire team the award today, and frankly, most days.

While I’ll give Azzi player of the game, my bad ass goes to Sarah. Besides stuffing the stat sheet, she got beat up every time she touched the ball, whether she was rebounding or bringing the ball up court and kept her composure. She was also as vocal as I’ve ever seen her. Yep, I’m going with Sarah as my BA !
Agreed. Although Fudd seemed to forget to shoot in the 2nd Q, she was MVP Azzi the rest of the game. For those that don't think Strong was the Badass, watch her on the reply. Seemed like every shot, every pass, etc. she got hit, grabbed, pushed, etc. With no viable big to sub for her, picture this game without her underneath the basket.

I think there are several good options, but I especially liked Kayleigh's performance--including 2 full-court drives in a row--and her teammates' reaction to them.

We did very, very well in the portal, picking up Kayleigh and Serah.

Almost a pick 'em for everyone not named KK. But I'll gave her a pass as it's obvious that her hands/wrist are banged up. Maybe a BA for just going out there and giving what she could?

Serah made the PG leap today. I think we know now that one-year seniors have a lot of learning and work to do to arrive at a place where they ‘belong’ on the court. The coach and the team gave Serah the time and today she rewarded them. Big time performance in a big game by our starting center.
The problem for Serah has been that she is a post player and the Big East is a guards and forwards league which puts her in a bind trying to cover out to the three point line. She shines when she has a fellow post to defend, and teams with a post player don't send bodies to double team her as often on offense.

I would also say that Uconn guards/wings have improved significantly in the quality of their post passing which helps as well.

As for the BA award ... everyone who played contributed and exhibited 'badness' but while I think she was also the POG, I'm voting for Azzi - her defense, steals, assists, and rebounds were a constant throughout the game even if as Geno pointed out in the presser she did also have a turnover!

And just lest we forget - KK led the team with 6 steals for what people have described as a 'quiet performance.'

I'm in agreement with those who think K9 was the badass of the game. However, I want to add to the Azzi love by pointing out that one of the ways UConn solved Tennessee's press in the second half was by having Azzi bring the ball up. The girl has handles. Who knew?

Which was completely offset by her very uncharacteristic turnovers. With her mask and tape, she looked like she should be playing for the Mayo Clinic. Tough kid to play through that.

A comment on Azzi’s handle. During the U19 FIBA World Championships a few years back, with no obvious PG on the team, HC Cory Close used Azzi as the team’s PG. Azzi lead the US team in assists, handling the PG role beautifully, as the US won the championship. Azzi is much more than a great shooter.

Mikayla Blakes of Vanderbilt will be 1st team AA and Azzi will be 2nd team

Blakes is a sophomore, Azzi a senior. Vandy will end season with 5 losses, UConn will be undefeated. Scoring is only one of the metrics used to determine AA status. IMO Azzi is a lock for 1st team, Mikayla could be 1st or 2nd.
Also relevant to the Blakes vs Azzi comparison is that Blakes plays on average 5+ mpg more than Azzi, and so far this season, Blakes has taken 141 more shots than Azzi, while Azzi’s shooting percentage is better than Blakes at every level: from the floor, 3-pt & FT.

She has "husky lungs"? I'm not a doctor or anything (or am I?) but I'd get that left one looked at if it's got the "Derpy Dog" in it.

A comment on Azzi’s handle. During the U19 FIBA World Championships a few years back, with no obvious PG on the team, HC Cory Close used Azzi as the team’s PG.

On the 2018 U17 team coached by Carla Berube, Paige and Azzi both started. I watched all seven games and specifically noted that, most of the time, Carla had Azzi bringing the ball up court with Paige playing off. Once the players got into half court motion, however, Paige and Jordan Horston became the primary assisters.

On the 2017 U16 team also coached by Berube, neither Paige nor Azzi started, but Azzi was third on the team in assists and led the team in steals.

I agree that Kayleigh was the BA. So scrappy, tough and fast. She does so many things that don’t show up in the stats. Sarah and Azzi are the stars, but the defense of K9, KK and Shade makes the whole team bad ass.
