Kansas Post Game Thread

There were games a couple years ago - including a Big East Championship - when Stewart had a good run of play and Karaban had extended rest. With Mullins back, we could see a little more of that. There are also teams we'll see who don't have much post scoring at the 5, or when Reed/Reibe have foul trouble, where we could see stretches with Karaban at the 5 and Stewart at the 4.

Once we get going, we will have some versatile pieces Demary (1/2), Mullins (2/3), Ross (2/3), Stewart (3/4), Karaban (4/5 - well, sometimes 5) that can help us match up in a lot of different ways - or exploit other team's weaknesses in a lot of different ways.

Completely agree. It hurts his performance down the stretch of the game. This happens no matter what the score is.
He should be playing 30-32 minutes.

Once Mullins cracks the starting lineup, with Ross as his main backup, Stewart can spell AK at the 4, which he's better at anyway. But he's been playing too many minutes his whole career. I think that's just Hurley trusting him out there.

Riebe has a presence that was respected more by KS as the game wore on. His switches and returns to defend the hoop are way beyond a freshman. I love his offense and great spin move in the first half which was negated by a waving arm attached to a 7+ foot body. Nice move! WOW!
LOL!!! At some point the refs should need to validate that the waving arm actually 1) contacted the defender, and 2) actually had an effect. That was the lamest chicken wing hook attempt foul ever. It should need to do more than look like a foul

Man what a night of basketball. Random thoughts:
  1. We won last night because of our grit and defense. That is night and day reversal from last year.
  2. Our guards are dogs. The on ball D is spectacular. Our help D was on point. And our bigs were contesting everything without fouling. Yes I know Silas only scored 2 points, but his overall D helped us get the W.
  3. Mullins is that guy. Kid does not even have his A game yet, and he made a difference.
  4. Reibe is that guy. He looks significantly better with every passing game.
  5. Saw Kentucky vs. NC. Both trash.
  6. Saw Florida vs. Duke. Cam would score 50 on us. We cannot stop that guy. That said, we kill that team because that's all they have, Cam Boozer. The Florida game will be tougher than we think. Those bigs are going to be a problem, because even if Bear plays, he is obviously not 100%.
  7. Coach Hurley has this team playing with an edge that I love. Falling behind 13 against Zona and 9 against Kansas on the road, and mounting a come back on both those teams without your best players. That is championship mettle.

You really went out on a limb and saying a McDonald’s all American is potentially really good huh? 😂

There's nothing in my post about his talent level. Everyone has always known he could shoot/score.

My point was that there was a fair amount of concern about him being able too scrawny and being overmatched physically at this level. Like we might have to find ways to hide him on defense to keep him out there. And I was pretty convinced (from limited observation) that he was going to be a dog on both ends.

Let's be honest. He's a shooting guard playing small forward. Against many (most) college teams that's fine. He's not as solidly built as Castle or McNeeley before him, but is probably quicker and more explosive than either of them.

I mentioned Alex going off once White was moved from SF to PF, well at the same time, the SF became McDowell most of the time, a guy who doesn't pose any size issues for Braylon. Not surprisingly, his minutes went up. Even White isn't all that big. I really don't want to find out what Caleb Wilson at UNC would do to Mullins. Bryce Hopkins would probably be tough for him to guard as well.

Hopkins has always been a Karaban matchup/issue at the 4. He'd probably have Wilson in a UNC matchup as well. In theory St. John’s could go extra big with Hopkins-Mitchell-Ejifor but they’d have to guard our perimeter with that lineup.

I'm honestly not worried about Mullins at all. Along the way, I'm sure some specific matchups will give him a little trouble in the post or off the dribble, but he's not a liability on defense. He's tough and he competes. We are also versatile enough to dictate matchups the way we like and decide to go quicker or bigger at basically any position.

He had 1 bad game, he's currently averaging 11 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists a game. I'm not really sure what the complaint here is
The complaint is he was horrendous and has made some head scratchingly bad plays even in his good games. The same way you can praise him for being good in games we as fans can call him on playing terrible and he was terrible in a big game. A bad game like that can derail the season. Thats the complaint.

Derailing the season is a little dramatic. Demery - like the rest of the team - is a work in progress. There were enough head-scratching plays to go around last night, but they gutted out a win in a really tough environment. It's a process. It's a bit odd to expect a well-oiled machine, especially from your brand new point guard, this early in the season.

By derailiing a season i mean him playing like that in the tournament and we get bounced. Yes its early and i expect him to get better but im going to call it out. He needs to be better and be consistent. Yes its early and sure im being hard on him as correctly you pointed out there were plenty of bonehead plays to go around but him in particular he is probably the most important player on this team.

That's fine, he was bad last night. I have no issue with you complaining about how he played last night. It's a little weird you think his 1 bad game will derail the season and are putting more weight on yesterday than the first 7 games where he was great and carried us to a win against BYU
