July Open Period

Expressions was down 3 with a minute and a half left and Karaban boxed a guy out but the guy just outfought him for the rebound and putback. Not ideal.

Starling disrobed somebody for a big layup then hit a 3 off a set play to ice the game.
Worst I've seen Karaban look, shot it poorly and seemed to be bothered by their speed and athleticism turning it over and having problems around the rim. I think it was just a bad game for him. Wish they called the foul on Claude's 3 attempt down 5 over a minute left. Would've made the ending interesting.

No Bowen BTW.

Karaban is the guy. He oozes IQ and talent. Not flashy but everything you want in a 3-4 combo. Does whatever you need to win. Even shooting poorly this game, he's my #1 want for this class by FAR. Thoughts from the game...

16 PTS
9 REB (box score says 8 but they're wrong)
2 AST

3/14 FG
2/5 3FG
6/6 FT

  • Solid fundamental rebounder
  • Didn't shoot well overall at all... 3/14 from the field.
  • Took some dumb shots early, just got flustered by their speed later on.
  • More athletic than we give him credit for. He gets up. Not super quick end to end though.
  • Makes his FTs. 6/6
  • Stroke is a little low on the release, but great balance and comfort shooting.
  • Solid fundamental defender. Not super quick laterally but smart enough.
  • Talks to his coach a lot. I like that in a player.
  • Not flashy
  • He hedges and recovers really intuitively. Isn't thinking about when to step up at all
  • Hit a DEEP 3 by the logo. This kid can shoot... then ANOTHER a minute later. Wow.
  • Clearly, the leader of this expressions team, even as someone playing off-ball. Talks to his teammates, coaches, calling the plays from under the hoop. Starts the sets, all that.
  • Had a nice block coming to help under the hoop. Stays straight up vs contact
  • Good hands. Some of those rebounds were tough snags
  • Hits ahead/chooses to dribble after rebounds perfectly
  • Got blocked once on a 3... happens with the low release. Blocked one more time at the rim later.
  • Got a charge call on him when posting up
  • Even played quite a bit of 5 when they went small. Definitely a more of a 3/4... maybe like 3.75, leaning towards a 4 right now.
  • Needs work defending the rim in transition... Doesn't take the right angle to make it tough... still, he's the first guy back defending the rim. Love to see that anyways
  • Definitely not a great game for him, but the pieces I've seen are there. When he shoots better later this weekend he'll look like a star. Made a lot of good plays... just couldn't score it.

Starling:

19 PTS
1 REB
0 AST

7/13 FG
3/7 3FG
2/2 FT

  • Quiet early. missed a bunch of threes
  • Had a nice drive early second half. Showed a little more off the bounce than I've seen before.
  • Doesn't really even bother to look for the scoring pass usually. Not a passer
  • Worst he's looked in a game to me that I've seen out of I think 4
  • Doesn't pass so when his shot is off, he doesn't add much value. Not a lead guard handle either... more of a 2G
  • Does have a knack for hitting 3s when you need them.
  • Another good drive... looks stronger.. Didn't do that at La Lumiere. 3 or 4 total.
  • Got hot late from 3. The kid can SHOOT when he's on.
  • Dominated the 4th quarter.

^ Much better job of summing it up than I did in the Karaban thread lol

Bowen played on a different Expressions Team 16u with Gavin Griffiths vs a team with Matas Buzelis who only got 1rb and scored 5 points in 24 min after looking like a juggernaut in Avon. I switched back and forth between games so missed Starlings better plays I guess. My personal choice is Anglin. Made 2 more 3's than the box score but waived off because of offensive fouls by other guys passing to him. Only 6 points for Filipowski but good on the boards. Very few big name guys are really killing it in the games I've watched pieces of.

JJ Taylor who is arguably the best '23 prospect in the country is also on Matas Buzelis team, he had 12 points. Gavin Griffiths had 25 against them.

11am this morning Taylor Bol-Bowen & Gavin Griffith vs Jayden Lemond. All 3 having good starts to Peach Jam 16u. I have only seen bits of Bowen & griffith at Avon and have never watched Lemond so I am looking forward to this Expressions 16u vs PSA Cardinals. Matas Buzelis at the same time for Mac Irvin so I will peek there as well. Combined with watching the Open from 5am = nice morning considering grey and overcast again.

Is there a livestream? The schedule says they are playing at Riverview Park Activities Center.. but I don't see any corresponding court name on the livestream page.

Yesterday when on was on the 'Schedule' page for the 16u and selected 'Livestream' when I was on that page, the courts were the 16u games. When I chose 'Livestream' when I was on the Eybl schedule it brought me to those courts. I'm relying on that today or I'll be scrambling too.

Great call Ricker... I hadn't realized we could watch the 16u games or I would've watched Bowen and Lemond--I have a strong hunch they'll be the core of our 2023 class... Performances from our 2023 targets:

No Isaiah Miranda

Reid Ducharme and TJ Power both playing 17u so understandably less great looking stats.

I will need to watch the Team Final game with Reid Ducharme again if it is on YouTube. Either the player I thought was Ducharme wasn't #12 or the scorer was blindfolded. The numbers were tough to see on the feed so there is a chance I made the mistake, but I think Ducharme might have taken 10 3's. He missed the first 3-4, made the next 3 straight, then missed the last 2-3. The official scorer has him with 3 overall shots? He took it to the hole 2x and got blocked at the rim as well. I know the scorers are bogus re personal fouls because some games have 20 trips to the line with 6 total personal fouls in the box score total for the 2 teams. Interesting but impossible. Does screw up my thoughts on Ducharme until I decide if I was watching the right guy.

Once the games start, they have live stats on the schedule page you used here: EYBL Schedule - Nike EYBL

Were you watching 16U or 17U? According to the box scores, TJ Power and Ducharme have only played 17U for BABC this weekend.

Overall: Akok clone with a higher skill level at the same stage. Great athlete, amazing defender. Deserves to be a 5* and we need to reel him in ASAP. Great in transition, decent shooter but not great. Needs to get stronger for the next level and improve handle to be a scorer in the half-court.

Notes:
  • I can see why he’s a 5*. I expect a rankings bump. I’d guess consistently 15-30 range. 2 blocks, 2 rebounds and a 3 in the first 3 minutes of gameplay. Ridiculous.
  • Shot is pretty wonky looking.
  • Built exactly like Akok was before his junior year. Long, lean, maybe 6’9 but still growing, I bet.
  • Will struggle to score in the half court outside of 3s until he’s bigger.
  • Not as athletic as some of our other 4s have been but he strikes me as more skilled and natural of an athlete. Still a very solid athlete.
  • Doesn’t hang his head after a bad play… just plays defense harder.
  • Seems like he can guard ANYONE
  • Unstoppable if he catches the ball on the run
  • Freak defender. So many blocks. I probably missed a couple tips + all the ones people are afraid to take
  • Drew a great charge and hit the floor hard
  • Gets bodies by 5s. Needs to bulk up

Lemond

Overall: Has all the skills we’re looking for in guards except he can’t shoot. If he isn’t going to even TAKE 3s in games or be a threat to shoot, I hope we take our recruitment in a different direction. Hopefully he improves that this hs season. There’s not much place for 6’3 guys who can’t shoot the rock in high-major basketball.

Notes:
  • Very quick. He blew buy guys straight up with no pump fake or jab multiple times.
  • Handle seems pretty good, but not great. Lefty driver righty shooter?
  • Didn’t take a jumper… must not be a good shooter at all.
  • I don’t think he’s a very good shooter at this point--very concerning at 6’3 or so.
  • Guarding Griffiths.
  • Tough at the rim for his size. Didn’t see any crafty finishes, but seems to have good body control.
  • Uses the jump stop in the post well.
  • Shifty with his dribble. Nice hesi
  • GREAT full court defender with his quickness
  • Like his lead guard potential.
  • Super skinny
  • Plays a bit like high school gaff w/ out shooting. More aggressive at the rim.

With 3 min left in the game.

Bol-Bowen + Gavin Griffith + Matas Buzelis likely does not outweigh 1 Clingan. All these kids have game but their bodies will become better.

1:30sec into the game, both Gavin & Taylor had each hit a 3. Bowen looks for threes more than I assumed. Liked numerous specific plays. Once moving towards the 3 point line from the paint a kid was covering him hard so he backcut hard, got the pass and dunked. I liked the IQ read. Another play was a give and go from Gavin that was textbook. Both plays together show that he is thinking the game. Bowen battles in the paint and jumps quick. He makes his share of plays there, but wouldn't survive a Sanogo until he matures body wise a bit. Nice and mobile. A ton of potential.

Gavin is a real nice shooter. Admitting that I have no idea if I was correctly watching Ducharme, Griffiths is the shooter had had expected Ducharme was.

I'd have to watch this game again to give an opinion on Lemond because I hardly noticed him. He must have scored at times I broke away to try and watch Buzelis. I only saw 1 breakaway run of the mill layup and by the box score there was more.

Gavin Griffiths is killing people in this expressions game. Has 12/3/2 10 minutes in.
He had a stinker after that shooting it as did the whole Expressions team, they got killed on the boards. He's a very talented offensive player with deep range and ideal length and athleticism for a 2/3. My wants for the '23 class are Miranda, Bol Bowen, and Griffiths. Bol Bowen and Griffiths are tight. Haven't seen any actual games from Lemond so can't say about him but I know the staff likes him and are very involved.

It was just one game. I'll watch a couple more this weekend, but I came away less than impressed with Lemond. Hopefully the total and complete inability to shoot the basketball was an anomaly.

Don't like hearing about the shooting. Just from highlights he doesn't seem like a great athlete. Don't know what are supposed to be his strengths and weaknesses, really know nothing about his game.

Watching Floyd Jr and team Final right now. Wasn’t at all impressed with the PG and come to find out it’s Justice Williams.

On another note I forgot how stacked these teams can be. Lively and Duren in the same frontcourt is scary.

Love the cajones on that shot. He hadn't played a very good game... only 1/4 from the field, but still trusted himself to make it.
Thought he wasn’t very active throughout but in the final 4 minutes made some winning plays, especially the buzzer beater.

AAU is weird. They play so many games and are go go go go so much, even the best players have major stinkers.
